2013-2014 Central Michigan University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wonder if rejections go out now too? Or only offers for acceptances?

Doubt they'll do rejections honestly. Probably just pull off the waitlist for the next month or so until the class is full. Maybe an email saying that thank you but our class is full.

Probably? Not sure. I know that for some schools that I did not receive an Interview Invite for, I either got an email saying that "our interview season has concluded for this season" or they just updated their online portal saying they were done considering students for the season.

If you're on the waitlist i'm not sure how long they will keep that waitlist flowing. I've heard of people getting pulled off really late (like mid to late June), so maybe they keep them indefinitely. Who knows though.

Okay, yeah I emailed admissions and they said it might go into June, possibly July. I guess I just don't understand the whole wait list processes...but I guess we're not supposed to. If the committee meets up and discusses applicants, and picks a couple for acceptance, then yes I guess they all stay on till the class is full. Ugh, so stressful.

I'm just making up figures here, so bear with me.

Let's say the anticipated class size is 100.
Schools usually have an idea of how many acceptances they need to send out per each expected matriculant. This is obviously higher at newer schools, as they are not established. Established schools can analyze past trends.

So let's say that a school knows that it will take approximately 2.5 offers per matriculant. Aka, 250 offers to fill 100 spots. Instead of doing that, they will send out 200 offers. From those 200 offers, they expect to get maybe 85 people. It's less risky to fill up 85 slots with direct offers of admissions, and then pull off the waitlist to fill up the 100. If they sent out all 250 and maye 110 people wanted to attend, that could be a poblem.

Obviously this varies by school, but the waitlist is essentially a way to keep a qualified applicants on hand to fill up spots if initial offers do not fill them. At least that's what I got from it.

Okay, that's positive. Thank you for explaining!!!

Sounds about right to me! CMU is doubly in the blind, because they only have the numbers from their first year class (119 offers for 64 spots) and have no idea how that acceptance rate might extrapolate to their much larger class size this year (104).

... so I'm not surprised if the offers at the end of the season really trickle in while they cautiously fill up the class.

Accepted off the wait list!! To those who were accepted earlier, what should I do now? I already applied to fafsa today and I'm definitely celebrating 🙂

Congratulations! I'd start looking for housing/roommates before everything gets filled up.

Do you know how I get a username and password or student ID number?

I think I got it with my paper acceptance but I could be wrong. I do remember activating it but I haven't logged in since like January so I don't remember. Try giving them a call, or check if they have any instructions up on the online student portal.

Anyone have advice about pets during medical school? I have two birds. They obviously don't need attention like a dog, but still need some attention. It's doable right? I don't want to give them away. Some people are married with kids and go to med school!!

In Michigan it's hard to be granted IS tuition like that. I know some places (Ohio) are easier in that regard, but I believe that you'll still be considered OOS because you're moving here for the purpose of school.

Well I am yes, but if I am married and my wife is moving there to work...

In Michigan, residency status is decided on a school-by-school basis. CMU has their criteria listed at the link below, but it doesn't hurt to check with the school!

https://bulletins.cmich.edu/2012/ug/Gen_Info/Res_Status_Pol.asp#Determining_Resident_Status

It looks like you can attain resident status after one year, but whether or not that applies if you have already started school in that year is something I don't know... I didn't read it too carefully!

Congrats! But you may have more support in this year's thread 😉

I'm not even sure how I messed this up haha

Does anyone in here know what it takes to be granted IS tuition? I am OOS, but my wife will be moving with me and working in Michigan, so I am hoping we are granted IS tuition after the first year.
When you signed the contract with CMU, it states that during your time at CMU, you will be considered OOS even though you will be moving there.

You could check with admissions to see if they will make an exception.

Withdrawing my app. Good luck to those on the wait list
