2013-2014 Cooper Medical School Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone received their financial aid package yet?

I got an email saying that the package was in the mail yesterday or the day before. I kind of laughed, because I'll be there this weekend for second look day, probably the same time it gets here in the mail. Lolz.

Hey, anyone here going to second look day?

I just withdrew my acceptance.

Fell in love with the school's culture, but the (lack of) financial aid made the cost too prohibitive to attend.

Good luck to any waitlisters! =]

Thank you! More hope for me. BTW what school are you heading to?

Hey everyone, I just withdrew my acceptance. Hopefully someone on SDN will get it! 🙂

Have a great day

More hope for all of us! What's the deal with the financial aid here? Is it not comparable to other schools?
the school is too new and has lots of deficiencies and kinks to iron. if you are accepted by a more reputable school is better to decide for the well known. i was told that cooper is not accredited yet, that may be influencing on the financial aid. i called to ask them what happens if the accreditation will not go thru and they didnt answer, they just said "it will pass" i will be applying next year and will use cooper as my safety but definitely will chose an old school over a new one if accepted.

Every school has to start somewhere. What deficiencies and kinks do you speak of?

I ask you the same question as KYTopgun. For someone who isn't even applying yet and hasn't visited the school, what "deficiencies and kinks" are you referring to?

Yes, the school is new, but we aren't talking about ITT Tech here. This is a University that has built a brand new, $140 million dollar, state of the art med school facility. It's curriculum has been reviewed and vetted by the LCME. They just don't throw around preliminary accreditations to schools in the hopes that they stick. The school is about to admit it's third class, and before it does so it must undergo a site visit and review by the LCME just as they did before they admitted their second class and the first class before it. While full accreditation is, of course, not an absolute given, a new school does not get this far without it being a virtual done deal. The LCME has their eyes on Cooper every step of the way.

I, for one, would be thrilled to matriculate here. I pray for acceptance off the waitlist.

sorry dont take ir personal. i know all schools start somewhere but you dont have to be their guinie pig. both of my parents are doctors (GYN and vascular surgeon), they know parents colleages of them, parents of students from this Medical School and the students seems to be disappointed. apparently they are not following the UMDNJ pattern and the third and four year students are not going to have inpatient clinicals. they are too focused on their mission and want to create family doctors only, not giving the students the oportunity of flavoring other especialties. what i meant is that as a new university they are creating their own rules as it goes, some of us need more structure. there are not even stats for how their students do on their boards, that is how new there are. my plan doesnt have to offend anyone, is just my plan. i rather go to a med school well stablished and better recognized when it comes to selecting residencies.

Also in a previous post you said you wanted to apply early decision. Why would you do that if you do not want to attend?
i was trying to investigate all the options for in state med schools due to the in state tuition. my parents then advice me against early decision because it forces you to apply to only one med school. i have not even taken my mcat yet, will take in may. i have one concern, every post said the students look happy, then they complain about the curriculum to their parents and parents talk to each other. i guess we are learning early the politics of medicine.

I've been hearing that this school's curriculum is going to be the new standard of for all medical schools. Plus I dont know where you get your information from, but during your first year you help run a clinic and start seeing real patients. You also during your third year at Cooper Medical Center in Camden, NJ. One of top hospitals in NJ and its Literally next to the school.

Keep in mind that all medical students at all schools complain about the curriculum. And honestly, the curriculum is somewhat experimental, although this is not the first school to try it. So yes, there will be kinks and inconveniences. However, most schools are moving in the direction that Cooper is going, and Cooper has the advantage of not having to awkwardly change long-standing traditions in medical education piecemeal.

I think your happiness at this school will really depend on what kind of person you are, how you learn best, and what your ultimate goals are as a physician. I personally like the idea of being on the bleeding edge of anything, because often that's where you'll find the most freedom to try out new ideas. I'm less likely to hear, "We can't do that because it's never been tried, and it will take too much effort to change." Personally, I find that more annoying than... well, just about anything. But if you learn best in lecture, and you'd rather not learn in small groups, and you like your learning path already well paved, then this ain't the school for you, and that's cool.

This was a very tough decision, but I will be withdrawing my acceptance. Hopefully it goes out to one of you! This is an excellent school.

Welcome! There has been no waitlist movement that we know of. A few have reported giving up their acceptances though...

This is so nerve racking! I would love to go to CMSRU. 🙁

Just withdrew my spot here. Major bummer, I loved Cooper -- fantastic administration, great curriculum, lovely students. I was OOS, good luck to everyone waiting!

You haven't taken your MCAT, yet you are calling schools asking about their accreditation process process... Hmm. Ok. But anyways, I have had nothing but exceptional responses to my questions. In fact, the responses I received from Cooper were quicker and more personal than any other school, which is why I'm overjoyed to say i'll be living in Camden NJ and getting my MD from CMSRU!!!!!!! yay!

Congrats to everyone that got off the waitlist recently!!! 🙂 I'm still on the waitlist but now that May 15th has passed, I'm barely hanging onto a thread of hope...still hoping though! So I was wondering if anyone could explain how the process works now that May 15th has passed. For those who were just pulled off the waitlist, how much time were you given to respond to the offer (if you don't mind sharing)? Because the thing that I am confused about stems from my conversation with Dr. Dayton on the phone today. I called her today and (first of all, she and everyone on the staff are just so sweet and helpful. Yet another reason why I would absolutely love to go to this school!!) asked whether there might still be movement on the waitlist or if the class is now pretty much filled up. She said the majority of the movement happened yesterday but expects that there will still be some movement over the next month. Once the class fills up, those of us who have not received an offer will receive an official rejection by email. So what I'm curious about is, why would there still be movement at this point? Would this only be contingent on waitlisters that are offered a spot that then decide to reject? Seeing as how all applicants can now only hold 1 acceptance, I feel like the class should basically be filled now from the originally accepted ppl and now the new people who have been pulled off the WL. Sorry hope my post is clear...does anyone have any input on this?

Thanks and congrats again to everyone who is lucky enough to attend this school! 🙂

Usually when a person is offered after May 15, they have two weeks to accept. Those who were offered spots yesterday and today have that time to decide. Also, after May 15, when a school offers an accepted student and they accept the new seat, it can trigger a cascade of open seats at various schools. Say a student is accepted to Cooper but gets offered to school B and accepts. Now Cooper has an open spot. Say Cooper offers someone with an acceptance and they accept Cooper, now a spot is open at that school and so on and so forth.

What are the chances of getting off the priority waitlist and also does this mean everyone on the priority waitlist would automatically be ahead of the normal waitlist?

Are you IS or OOS? The reason I ask is that I was advised there would be very little movement for OOS'ers.

Apparently, not many accepted OOS'ers gave up their seats. I guess they have an OOS limit, lol.

Yeah it is no more than 30% of the class. What state are you from and did she say that there would be more movement on the IS front?

I'm from Florida. She didn't say anything to me about IS. The Cooper 2018 FB page is a pretty good indicator of where the class is as they pretty much don't over accept, don't allow upperclassmen onto the page, and drop and add people pretty quickly when people accept or drop out. The page currently has 53 members for their class size of 72. It was at 72 until last weekend, dropped to 64 early in the week, and then to 53 on the 15th. I would wager that they offered most or all of the empty seats on Thursday or Friday and are waiting for the offered to answer (I think after May 15, you get two weeks).

Can you tell I really want to go hear, lol? I am gutted that I'm not going to make it barring some miracle.

Anyone have a link to the FB page? I can't seem to find it.
