2013-2014 Cooper Medical School Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey thanks for the info! I'm due to interview here soon and I'm hearing nothing but good things about this place! So I'm so excited to meet the faculty and check out the facilities 🙂 Though I'm anxious just because of how few people they accept into their entering class! Not to mention the OSCEs, which I can help but be nervous about what to expect regarding those.

Best of luck to you, I hope you get in off the WL as well :luck:

An interview here means you're already at a very good spot 🙂.

Do not worry about the osces. My group did them first thing, though, so make an even greater effort to be totally "on" by 9 or earlier. No stress, though. No special prep needed.

Yeah, the OSCEs are nothing to stress about at all. Dr. McGeehan makes it pretty clear that a lot of the structure is there more for his own interest about seeing how we think on our feet, not really the quality and comprehensiveness of our answers. I definitely got the sense from the interview that they aren't a major determinant in your evaluation. They're more of an interesting data point. Good luck! Get ready to fall in love with the staff.

Oh wow. They said at the interview that we should hear by next week.. I guess not :/
Yeah they said that to me too. I haven't seen much activity on this thread since I interviewed though, so I'm assuming others are in the same boat.

Accepted!!!
I absolutely loved this school, their mission, the faculty, everyone. I'm very, very impressed and very happy.

It's hard to say as they are only filling 75 seats this year. It seems that everyone who tours the school and interviews there falls in love with it. I was no different!!

As far as the wait list goes, there is a priority wait list and a regular waitlist. Apparently last year there was very little movement on the priority wait list and no movement on the regular waitlist. As someone who is on the regular waitlist, I really hope there is some movement this year!!!

I'm currently an M1 at Cooper. Last year I interviewed in Feb and was placed on the regular waitlist. I was moved to the priority list 2 weeks after I received my original waitlist, then I was accepted in May. There was movement for our class so there is always a reason to hope for your class. I know there were a few other people accepted after me.

For those of you worried about the OSCEs, don't be. There's no pressure, the standardized patients aren't trying to test you, they are actually all great in my experience. If you have a talent for interacting with others, let it shine!

Cooper seems pretty awesome so far, good luck to everyone who likes the school, cant wait to see you next year.

Add me to the long list of people who were extremely impressed/blown away by this school and everything about it! What an amazing experience!!!!

Priority waitlisted today. Interviewed early Dec. IS. Anyone know the chances of them pulling from the "priority waitlist"?

There's a pretty good chance. My friend out in off the priority waitlist last year

Complete Mid August, OOS 3.6/34 and still no news :/
I wouldn't worry too much. When I signed up for my interview...I saw that their interview dates ran from Dec. all the way to late April. They prob will send out invites Jan/Feb/March like other med schools on applicants that don't meet all their reqs, but are decent in qualities. Hope this helps.

Anyone know, or can clarify, exactly what the "Self directed study" aspect of the curriculum entails? Current students, people who already interviewed?

Thanks

Has anyone received an interview invite recently?

SDL is the schedule's way of saying to you there isn't anything to do but they recommend studying. I usually go home and study in the evening, but a lot of people choose to study at school.

Just canceled my interview, hopefully one of you get it. It's coming up soon. PM for the date.

Best of luck

Hey, everyone, interviewing tomorrow morning. Any advice?

Relax, be yourself, etc. Let your service mindset (you have one, right?) shine through. Also, be prepared to answer a random question from the dean in front of the whole group. There are a lot of valuable posts in this thread w/r/t the interview day. The interview feedback reference section on SDN also has a list of some of the questions they might ask. The standardized patient portion (despite being nervewracking when you're in the waiting area) is actually pretty neat.

Any accepted applicants gotten any financial aid (i.e., scholarship) news? Current M1/M2s want to talk a bit about the process/availability of aid?

Interviewed yesterday. They made every attempt to keep us relaxed. Very nice, very friendly. Beautiful facility. Love the mission, and I'd love to go here. Supposedly we'll know this Thursday. Anyone else on here interview yesterday (1/24)?

SDL, as it was explained to me yesterday in my interview, entails your doing whatever you think will be helpful in studying. In other words, it's just time to study. The dean who explained it to us said something to the effect of while they don't encourage using that time to go watch TV, theoretically you could.

Hello,

First time poster, long time reader.
I was accepted today (1/30) and I feel blessed with the opportunity to join this new upcoming medical school.
I was a re-applicant as well this cycle and wish luck to everyone still seeking the greatest news ever.

Congratulations! We must have interviewed together. I'm on the wait list. Anyone know anything about the wait list?

Apparently, there is a regular wait list and a priority wait list. Your email would say priority wait list if your are, in fact, on that list. From best research, last year a couple got in off the priority list and no one off the regular, but the SDN community is the only sample population. With the increased class size, there are hopes of a little more movement this year. As a regular wait list candidate, I most certainly hope so!! Good luck!

Interviewed on Feb 7. Accepted today, soo excited. Completed Oct 15th.

Don't mean to crash your thread here, but I was curious and decided to check in (I don't frequent SDN very often). I was on the waitlist at cooper last year and "upgraded" to priority WL--then offered a position from there. So I think there is definitely hope on the regular WL to get upgraded.

Thank you very much!! This is great news!! I really hope this happens to me!

Yeah, that's great news!

I interviewed last Friday and have not gotten a call or email does that mean I can assume a rejection or waitlist?

No, usually it means they did not get to your file in the last adcom meeting.
I agree, especially with the storm that just passed. They probably wanted to ensure they left early enough to avoid it. 🙂 Best of luck.

They left me a voicemail to call them back but I wasn't able to reach them. Is it a good sign they called? Interviewed this past Monday and was really not expecting a phone call!

Pretty sure they only call for one reason, lol. I didn't receive a phone call when put on the waitlist.

Any Incoming students looking for a roommate for 1st year at Cooper?

Has anyone received their financial aid package yet?

planning to apply early decision for next year. the cooper web site states that need to apply earlier than july 15. does anyone knows how early? when is the beginning date of the early decision applications?

If I recall, early decision begins with the start of the AMCAS application cycle. Early decision applications are pushed to the front of the AMCAS review queue so the app gets to the school as soon possible.
