2013-2014 George Washington University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those that submitted the secondary... it was just a couple check box questions and then the few essays, right? I see a lot of other secondaries ask for you to list certain courses you've taken, but didn't see that on this secondary... did I miss something or does GWU just not ask that in their secondary?

GWU doesn't ask. Not sure why any school does really, they have access to our AMCAS primary entered course work.

Has anyone NOT received a secondary yet? I was verified back on June 21st and I still haven't gotten one. I checked my junk mail too.

Well, I was able to make an account with that link. I'll probably email them tomorrow too. Thanks a lot!

Anyone else been placed on re-review? If so, when did you submit?

sorry to repost, but i didnt want this to get buried. is it cheesy to quote their website in the why GW essay?

Also a fellow applicant, so this is just my opinion (and also to keep the topic going for you! 🙂 ) I would suggest that you don't directly quote the website, but perhaps find a way to paraphrase whatever it is and integrate it into your essay. Unless it's maybe very specific wording or a list, then maybe you could quote it like "GW's stated mission of '__________' traditions makes me interested'" or something better hah but you get the point.

I'm not verified yet and I just finished my secondary for GW. Would it be advantageous in any way if I submit my secondary now or should I just wait until I'm verified? Sorry if someone already asked this.

What do you mean re-review? What was your status?

"Re-review" is when your status page reads the following:

"Your application to The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences is complete and has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee. To date, no final decision has been made and the Admissions Committee has placed your application on hold for re-review at a later date."

Before this message, it read that they received the completed secondary/letters of recommendation.

Did anyone submit earlier (before July5th) and NOT get the re-review message?
Just wondering. Definitely re-working my secondary essays now, because my neurotic pre-med mind tells me they felt my application missed the mark.

Yeah, I was complete on the 4th and my status just changed to rereview this morning. Hopefully it's not a bad sign

Same here. Thanks, GW, for making me paranoid :scared:

Secondary submitted 6/30 complete on 7/1 and my status is still at complete.

Submitted secondary June 28th and I've still got the complete status.

I'm not sure how much it matters, but right now I feel like I'm desperately clinging to that "complete" status, cringing that it might change to "re-review" soon. lol.

I'm in the same boat --- still at "complete" (submitted on day 1 / June 28th) and REALLY hoping that I don't change to re-review... but honestly, I have no idea what any of it means! Being the first secondary I finished, I put a whole lot of effort into it and actually feel a great connection to GW. So... I guess we shall see.

Best of luck, everyone!

I was on hold...now I am back to the original "your file is now complete...received all necessary credentials....for your application to be reviewed" status.😱

Anyone else get switched back to the original status?

That's awesome! I suspect that means good things for you in the next couple weeks 😉

I am sadly still staring at the dreaded re-review status

That's what happened pre-interview last year rigut

Right. I can't type..

Yup, a lot of people were switched around last year. Unfortunately I'm still at rereview, but I was only put on that status yesterday so hopefully I will still get a status change soon.

When did you submitt secondary and were complete?

Well I submitted my secondary on the 4th so I guess either that day or the 5th. I am already verified and have all my LORs in

I take that back, I was complete on the 2nd. But didn't get the rereview status change til the 9th. No idea what that means

I was complete on 7/1. Hopefully this means they looked through my app and didn't think there was any thing wrong because I have not been put on "hold" yet.

I would think having the original status for this long is definitely a good sign!

3. Have you ever been convicted of, plead guilty, or plead no lo contendere (i.e., no contest, I do not wish to contend) to a criminal offense? Have you ever been arrested for a felony or misdemeanor?

So i was arrested when I was 20 for an underage drinking charge but the charge has since been dismissed so I was not convicted.

Therefore, I will answer 'yes' but what should I exactly put in the 500 characters? I can sum up this in about 75 characters. What do you guys suggest? Should I explain more?

Explain what you learned from it and the steps that you will take to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

How would recommend me wording this? To be honest I didn't learn much and all I did was just not go out for the couple of months until I was 21. Which actually worked out nicely because I made straight As that semester in my upper chem classes, maybe I could mention that in a way?

It's not a big deal. When I was 20 the same thing happened to me, I spoke to an adcom very soon after, and they could not be less concerned. If you do not have a repeat history, it's not a problem

Yeah mention that. Honestly alcohol infractions aren't that big of a deal. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Thanks guys, yeah I'm not to worried since I've read so many threads about it on SDN I just don't want it to come across on any of my secondaries that I don't really care lol

My status changed back to the "complete" status from the "hold" status. What a roller coaster haha. And it probably doesn't mean anything.

When did you first notice that it was on hold?

It was either 7/8 or 7/9. I can't remember, but it was pretty recent. I had everything submitted by 7/2.

I'm not sure I've seen a single more over-analyzed issue on a pure minute-to-minute basis in my life.

I don't think it's as much over-analyzing as comparing to previous cycles.

GW just updated their Facebook page saying interview invites are going out by week's end. Good luck everyone!!

Update from the George Washington University M.D. Program Office of Admissions Facebook:

We will be sending out interview invitations before the week is out! Our first interview date is scheduled for Thursday, September 5th and we will be continuing the cycle through March. Best of luck to our 2014 applicants!

I submitted my secondary on the first possible day, and I still have the complete status. Choosing to interpret this as good news, and I guess I'll find out for sure soon!

I'm still on hold 🙁 this does not bode well for me.

There's already been so movement though, right? So don't despair!

My application still hasn't even been looked over, I don't think... 🙁

Status: "We have received your secondary application to the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. If you have not done so, please send your letters of recommendation to AMCAS. If you have questions about letters please contact AMCAS. If we require any further documentation, we will contact you."

I uploaded my letters yesterday and my status changed today to "complete".

Awesome! Did they send you this in an email, or is it somewhere on the secondary site?
