2013-2014 Loyola University (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sent an In the Area to Loyola and got a response that they would forward the information to the AdCom. If they want to grant me an II, I should hear back within the next two weeks! :xf:

Good luck! Let us know how it goes! And tons of good vibes being sent your way for your other interviews!

Has anyone been small-pooled this cycle?

So, when I log into my application it says: "Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail."

So since it says my file has been reviewed but I haven't been emailed an II yet, should I assume that I've basically been put on hold? Does anyone else have this as their status?

Yes. I believe the consensus is that this is the hold status.

Does Loyola still average multiple MCAT? I got 26 and 27 on the first 2 tries but did well on the third time so I'm not sure if it's worth it to apply?

I don't think they ever did that...?

II today! 🙂 I was complete 7/19, under review the whole time. Tried to schedule my interview, but I got the answering machine when I called, so I guess I will have to call back later.

Just curious, in going by the "25 line" suggestion, did you look at number of lines in Word or in the text box itself? What looked like 25 in Word suddenly became 31 when I copied and pasted!

To quote Pirates of the Caribbean, I believe they're "more like guidelines". My essays were 25 lines or less in Word and when I pasted them into the text boxes, but on the print preview page (which is likely the format the committee members will see my app in), most (if not all) of my essays were more than 25 lines (one was even 30 or or so lines...).

I got an II, so I don't think they count lines unless it's obvious you wrote way more than 25 lines worth. *shrugs*

One of those rare Saturday interview!

Me too! If I didn't have a job I would've picked a weekday, but I'm loathe to miss more work when other interviews won't give me the option of a Saturday interview...

Very happy Stritch is so flexible in this capacity. 🙂

I think it's perfectly okay to leave a message with your name and number--I did so and Judy called me back fairly quickly (she's got a lot of people calling her, you have to remember).

Yep, she called me back right away. Excited for the chance to interview here!

October 22nd!

Exciting! Mine's the 19th (one of the rare Saturday interviews). 🙂

I'm from the Chicago area and I'm super-pumped; Loyola's got a great reputation and is close enough to the city to likely allow some rotations there (& it has its own hospital, too, right on campus--and a pretty large one at that!).

I had no idea they did Saturday interviews! I basically jumped at the first available date she gave me... I also would've asked how high, but that's neither here nor there 😉

Haha, right? I was so happy when I learned Saturdays were available--I miss less work this way.

Hey guys, can anyone chime in on the experimental treatment question? Isn't just a matter of consent..if patient is minor, try to explain to parents, ultimately respect their wish..if patient isn't minor, explain to parents and try to get their approval, if they still don't approve, still proceed because patient has ultimate say?

^^^ This is exactly it.

I basically went along those lines. However, I did take into account the mental state of the patient, i.e, if they were not cognizant enough to be able to reason and have proper decision making skills. So, I discussed that factor as well, seems that no one else did, though..

I discussed that briefly as well, just didn't say so in any of my posts here on SDN. The ethical essay is meant to test your reasoning & logic, and everybody thinks a little differently...thus I didn't post in detail what I wrote for that essay here. *shrug*

I think people are worrying too much about that one essay--there's plenty of acceptable ways to answer that one essay (and I'm sure adcom members realize that), plus 5-6 other essays where you can express yourself to the adcom.

Been under review for past five weeks. I don't really know what that means....

Don't worry too much, I was under review for longer than 5 weeks and I just got a II. Maybe they are just taking awhile to go through all of the applications.

Thanks. I was getting a little worried. Maybe it's my application... But it's taking some time to hear back from schools

Can anyone tell me how many essays the secondary for this school is? I'm tight on cash ATM so i'm prioritizing the schools i submit my secondaries to.

I had the hardest time uploading a picture. I tried with both chrome and firefox at first. It says that both .jpg and .gif files are compatible, but the only way I was able to get it to work eventually was to convert a .jpg to .gif. Hope that helps

5 if you're a full-time student this year, 6 if you're not. One of the 5 is an "anything else" essay (and it isn't clear if it's optional or not; I used my diversity essay for that space).

If you're not really gung-ho on Loyola right now, maybe you should wait...especially if you haven't written a version of some of the essays for other schools already.

Is the 6th question on secondary "anything else you feel we should know." about why loyola or is it safe to leave blank. how did you guys answer?

The first sentence of that prompt really indicates the propose: to bring your AMCAS application up to date. I think you are focusing too much on that "anything else" phrase. I don't think the purpose of that section is for you to write about the school...but I guess you could if you wanted.

I didn't write anything, but I haven't gotten an interview yet haha.

I interpreted that as "anything else" concerning your AMCAS, so I answered with "NA".

i have a question with the organic chem prereq. do i need a year of lab for organic? i only took lab for organic 1.

To those people worried about the no-science requirement, I finally got a response from Loyola:

"In regards to your substitution of the non-science faculty letter, we will accept one from any of the individuals listed below. We only ask that you provide us with a note of explanation explaining why you were unable to meet the requirement with a faculty letter, which can be found on the letters of recommendation inventory form on our secondary application.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us."

What's a lor inventory form? Is te explanation a drop down option or do I need to mail a note?

question about letters in general:

I have a letter packet where all my LORs were sent to an office at my school put in one bundle, and sent to AMCAS. So on Loyola's secondary, this is obv not a committee letter so do I put in the names of each person who wrote me a LOR? AMCAS has my letter packet listed under the name of the secretary of the office (per my school's instructions). Should I put her name on the secondary as my "advisor" (which she is not)?

Thanks

Do you have an actual committee/cover letter or is it just a packet of letters? I had a packet of 5 letters + a "cover" letter written (by a pre-med advisor), and all of these are as a packet under the name of my university and a secretary of my pre-med office (which sounds similar to your situation).

In my case, I just put the secretary whose name the packet is under on AMCAS as my committee writer, I believe; I didn't list all the letter writers.

oh darn i submitted already and just listed out all my LOR writers...

It's just a packet of letters gathered at the office. The advisor doesn't write an LOR or cover letter I think. Obv I didn't see it and the instructions on the site are vague =/

Do you think it is too late to submit a secondary here? I just added the school and don't know if it's practical at this point since people have already interviewed. What do you think?

I'm sure that'll be fine! They probably just want to make sure they've got all your letters.

My application is "under preliminary review". How long were you guys "under review" before II? Is that even the next step, or is small-pool e-mail the next step?

It took me a month and half. So don't worry. I was told that all schools should process applications much faster. They were bogged down with Amcas delay and orientation preparation.

Under review around 7-17, invite 8-15--so around a month under review (no hold status in between).

For the question about working with a diverse group of people, do you guys think volunteering in a free clinic or tutoring inner-city kids would be a better topic?

Also, is it OK if the examples we use for these essays are also listed as our most meaningful experiences on AMCAS?

when people check their status via online status check and there are headings and dates for "invitation to submit supplemental application" and "supplemental application received" is there a heading regarding letters of recommendation as well?

II 9/6!!! My only problem is that I was working all day and didn't find out until after the office closed. If anyone could tell me if they know if there are still openings for late October, I'd very much appreciate it! 😀

In the meantime, I guess I'll call and leave a message today.

Either sounds good! Maybe the latter because you likely worked with the kids more closely and had more interaction with them? I guess I would pick whichever had more interaction and is something you can reflect more deeply on.

Yes, as long as you have something new to say about those activities in the secondary essays as well.

Yes. Mine (post-interview invite & confirmation of interview date/submission of extra forms) looks like this (but with actual dates; I removed the days/months when I copy/pasted here):

**/**/2013 - Invitation to submit Supplemental Application
**/**/2013 - Supplemental Application received
**/**/2013 - Letters of Recommendation received

**/**/2013 - Technical Standards accepted
**/**/2013 - Confirmation of Prerequisites submitted
**/**/2013 - Your Interview Date

They will continue to add lines as your application progresses--the last three lines appeared after I picked a day to interview & submitted the two post-invite forms.

Congrats! Not sure how many openings are left; I called a couple weeks ago so my perception of what dates are open is off.
