2013-2014 Loyola University (Stritch) Application Thread

I was planning to arrive to Chicago on Sunday at 11am but expedia messed up my ticket and cancelled it. I had to re-book another flight. Horrible service, I was in the phone with them for over 7hrs in the span of 3 days and finally booked today.

I'm scheduled to arrive to arrive to O'Hare around 4:40pm and taking a shuttle. I'm planning on staying in Holiday Inn because you all recommended it. Is there anything to do around? I wanted to try chicago style pizza and other things but I only have a very limited time since I'm leaving the next day at 6:30pm. Anyone else interviewing this March 4th? The day isn't that structured right? Can someone help me understand how the weekday interviews are? Any tips for the interview?

My weekday interview was structured, but it was structured specifically for me, i.e. my two interviews, tour, and lunch were not necessarily scheduled with other applicants. The whole day was over for all of us around 3 or 3:30 pm. The admissions staff does a really good job giving you a detailed schedule of your day so you will be able to assess once you get to the office on the morning of your interview 🙂 Hope that helps!

Sorry to hear about your booking troubles! There isn't much to do around the hotel without a car unfortunately. There is a Jimmy Johns pretty close though. Being from California, I had never had that before, so I checked that one off my list. It was great! No places nearby for deep dish pizza though.

Regarding the interview, I think it is very structured. The admissions office staff are very helpful in getting you set up. You'll typically have two interviews (about an hour each) first thing in the morning after filling out some paperwork. They are very relaxed. Then you'll have a student take you on a tour around the school, followed by lunch. After lunch you'll spend a few minutes talking with the dean of admissions. And after that your day is pretty much done. My one tip for the interview would be to bring a copy of your transcript or primary app. You will fill out some paperwork which requires you to list some classes on there, and having a transcript for reference is very helpful.

2/13! I guess my group is supposed to hear after the committee meets on 3/3... ahhhhhhHhhhhh

They told me 3/17 and I only interviewed a week after you. Bummer! The waiting is the worst part. I hope they squeeze me into that adcom meeting on 3/3. Good luck!

So, someone said the interviews end March 8th. I didn't get a rejection during what seemed like mass rejection day last week, but also didn't get an interview invite. I sent an update in January, but no communication since. Should I assume I was also rejected? Is there any possibility of an interview invite at this point? Basically lost all hope.....

Is Stritch receptive to letters of intent? I assume yes but I just want to make sure. On the applicant portal it gives you the option to submit an "update document" but I'm not sure a letter of intent falls under that category.

I recall Viviana saying (back in October) that Loyola likes to "feel the love" from their applicants. Ive also heard of a couple people getting IIs shortly after submitting a LOI.
Btw, did anyone else get the whole "applying-to-medical-school-is-like-dating" analogy from her? It totally rang true!

Haha yeah we got that from Dean Jones when he spoke with us. It is a pretty spot-on analogy.

Haha YES I loved her little spiel about that! It was very true. And I love that she remembered all of our fun facts, she talked about mine in thee acceptance voicemail... I felt so special

Really enjoyed my interview at Loyola this week!! Great vibe from the school and the people.

I'd recommend the Holiday Inn Express in Hillside. It was about $100/night with all taxes included, and I believe they have a shuttle to and from O'Hare. I flew into Midway (which I would recommend), so I had to take a cab. If you take a cab, do not take one of the city cabs. They are a ripoff. Call up one of the flat rate taxi companies to come pick you up. They'll take you to Hillside for $30-$40, which is about half of what it would cost to take a city cab. The Holiday Inn Express is also nice because they have a free shuttle service which will drop you off at the medical school and bring you back to the hotel after your interview is done.

Thanks! I was wondering, do they offer shuttles before 7am? My email says to report at 7am.

I stayed at the Best Western Hillside which was really convenient. They have a 24 hour shuttle, I also had to report at 7 am and they got me there in plenty of time.

I believe I'm also in the 3/3 pool. Really hoping for an acceptance. Loyola is currently at the top of my list!

Super excited for my interview here on Tuesday! Never been in snow before. What do people typically wear during interview day? I'm a male, if that helps.

Hey MH! A suit is pretty typical for guys. May I recommend a wool coat to look good and keep warm. I'm a personal fan of long coats to keep your butt warm but short or long is good 🙂 good luck!

Navy or charcoal suit with dress shirt and tie. Black dress shoes.

There was quite a bit of snow when I went. I wouldn't say it's necessary to dress super warm since you'll spend the entire day indoors. Check your shoes when you first get there though. I had salt residue on mine and didn't notice until a fellow interviewee pointed it out.

I'm also interviewing the coming week. I think someone mentioned that the interviews are closed file? But then elsewhere in the thread, I read that the interviewers had detailed information on the applicants? Does this mean they only have your personal statement and supplemental essay, but not your gpa/mcat? Can anyone comment on this? Thanks!

The interviewers are familiar with you app except the GPA/MCAT. They have gone through your supplemental app, read those essays and from my interview experience, my interviewer brought up a few experiences I had mentioned on the AMCAS.

I know that the committee meets today but do they make calls today as well or do you think they will start tomorrow?

I'm wondering too. I haven't heard anything so I've been checking this thread to see if anyone has posted about an acceptance yet...

For my group back in October, they called people the evening of the meeting. So you might hear back today! Good luck 🙂

Finally in my hotel! I'm at holiday express in hillside Any good places to eat? I'm thinking of calling for pizza 🙂

When do we need to submit fin aid information?
ASAP. Not sure of the timeline for post-Oct interviewees, but the sooner the better. You can file FAFSA anytime, and you can add multiple schools if needed. You'll need to wait for the packet before you turn in the hard copy stuff.
But get 'er done!!

Well thanks for the heads up. Have that many people really gotten their tax information back yet?

Legally, W-2s and such (1098T, 1098E, etc) are supposed to be sent out by the end of January. Many times, you can get the docs you need electronically. Depending on how simple your taxes are, you can get them done in a couple days and submit taxes and FAFSA electronically. If you need help, PM me... Ive done this a few times 😉

I got an acceptance call on Monday the 3rd around 5pm, on my way home after I just had 5 wisdom teeth extracted (apparently I'm a mutant). My mouth was numb and full of gauze, but I'm pretty sure they could tell I was excited. Wooooooooooooo class of 2018!

I was a reapplicant, and I sent them a very sincere LOI because Stritch has always been my dream school. So, to all of those still waiting out there I absolutely know your pain. Keep your head up and persevere, it all will work out in the end =)

I just got an email about a diversity mixer following second look... is this the get together that's typically organized afterward?
Anyone know more about this?

On my interview day, we were all told by the person who I assume was most directly responsible for our applications that he hates making calls and prefers to write letters and that we'd be reviewed on 3/3. Am I being neurotic for worrying that I'm going to get rejected just because I haven't heard...? I live in NC so I guess it could still be in the mail. *sigh* I just loved Loyola so much...
I'm in the same boat! I had just assumed I got rejected or waitlisted because I didn't get a call. Who is this person that only communicates by snail mail?? They didn't give us any info about how we would find out at my interview, I just assumed phone call based on this thread. I called the admissions office and they wouldn't tell me anything except that letters would be mailed at the end of last week, so I guess we can expect to find out for sure tomorrow or Tuesday? I live on the east coast too so who knows.

For the life of me, I can't remember his name, but that is what he told us. If they told you that they were mailing letters at the end of last week, then I guess I should still be optimistic! That's actually a great relief haha. Yay for patience

It was probably Dean Adrian Jones (assistant dean of admissions). He spoke with my interview group for a few minutes, and from what I have seen on this thread he does that with every group that comes in.

Interviewed 2/26 and loyola became my top choice from the amazing experience.
so now waiting for what seems like forever....

I interviewed on 3/3 and we were also told we would hear back on 3/17. Looks like 3/17 will be a big day!
