2013-2014 Rutgers University - NJMS Application Thread

Do they usually invite for 2nd interview only if you're close to the area? What if you live far away?

Really good question. I got a 2nd interview and I'm from the NY metro area. Maybe others can chime in

II today! I've been having a really down week and this completely cheered me up! I am SO excited, this school is my top choice for sure 😀

Also, I meant to ask this earlier, but does anyone have an idea of NJMS's USMLE Step 1 scores, preferably from the most recent year possible? Given the school's Match List I imagine it's great, but I was just curious.

I was wondering the same thing... according to my student tour guide their Step scores are "at or above average"...not that that tells you too much.

anyone know if there have been any decisions recently? how often does the committee meet and how often are calls made?

When were you complete?

Congrats to those that have been accepted, and good luck to those still waiting.

M1 here, and I am very much happy with my decision to attend NJMS.

I had a second interview here, and it was in March. Then I got waitlisted, and subsequently rejected. So schedule the second one ASAP and early!

Placed on the alternate list today. 1st interview 9/20; 2nd interview 10/3

Sucks 🙁 but I guess it's better than a rejection. Good luck everyone!

I was wondering if anyone accepted here got a "Interviewer Congratulatory Letter" from the admissions office on behalf of the interviewer? I got one today, and it says that the admissions office can help me find a professor in the field of my research interest.

II here today!
3.8+/34/IS
Complete first week of Sept.
They have interview spots as early as next week.

I don't want to be too specific lol but I'll say sometime in the last 7 days.

Yeah I got one, and mine said something like that as well. I think there's probably a standard template they use.

Did you mail out the acceptance reservation forms? If yes, did you get a confirmation email that it was received.

I mailed out mine on 10/22 with a deposit check. So I ended up calling the admissions office since the check hasn't been processed yet. They said they haven't received my documents, and they'll send an confirmation email once the forms are received.

Im NJ resident and usually it takes 2-3 business days for the first-class mails to be delivered so now I'm just a little concerned and wondering why they haven't receive the forms yet.

I'm interviewing here in a couple of days and I've been trying to read as much as possible about the school. Anyone have any last minute tips? Thanks in advance 🙂

just received the acceptance call from Dr. Heinrich! interviewed 10/2 .... IS/ 35 mcat / 3.74 cGPA / 3.74 sGPA

  • Don't be lulled into a false sense of security if you have a very nice and pleasant interviewer! The interviewer is (in my opinion) using that niceness to get you to slip up and say something you're not supposed to. Just remember.....it's a trap!
Good luck and don't stress too much after the interview! According to their website, about 60% of people who interview end up getting accepted.

everything he said is pretty good advice except the following bullet point. your interviewer is your advocate and is not looking to see you trip up. they want to see you be accepted so if you do have a very friendly interviewer it's because they're friendly/liked what they saw on your primary app... interviewing is not another competitive screening process. that's already done and over with the mcat, gpa, and extracurrics. now they just want to use the interview to see if you are a good match, and you can't really fake that so although it is very cliche to say... just relax and be yourself. out of all my interviews, the only interviews that were stressful for me were MMI's. traditional interviews allow you to build a rapport with your interviewer with incredible ease. good luck!

Yeah I mailed them out, but still no confirmation email of them being received. I emailed Dean Heinrich and he said that I shouldn't worry about it as long as I sent them. He said that the postal return envelopes frequently take a while. I was worried too haha but I guess we shouldn't be.
I received the confirmation email by the admissions office today! You may get one soon. I'm soo relieved haha.. Good luck!

for those accepted and live in nj, how long did it take for you to receive the acceptance packet in the mail? i received the call on monday and i believe dr. h told me he would be signing and mailing the packets on tuesday. just curious about the timetable and excited to send back a deposit 😀

I see that you interviewed 10/2 and heard back this week; has anyone interviewed later than that and received notice? I was in the 2nd week of October and I'd hoped to hear back from here by now. *fingers crossed*

I am an IS. I got the call from Dr. H on 10/16 which was Wednesday. He said he was going to sign my letter Thursday morning and mail it out on the same day. I ended up receiving my packet on the Monday morning. I thoght it was pretty quick.

Good luck 🙂

Side note: when you mail out the acceptance deposit, it will take at least 2 weeks for them to receive it or mark it received (I'm not sure which one it is). You'll also receice a confirmation email from admissions office once it is received. One would think the mail should be delivered within a week esp since it's being mailed within the state. So I started freaking out when I did not hear back from admissions office about a week after I mailed out the deposit, and ended up calling the office right at the two-week mark. Finally, I received the email informing the receipt of deposit a day later. In retrospect, for my own peace of mind, I would send it by a registered mail.

^ I don't think it's because of that. NJMS probably has a mail sorting system and probably because of that, the mail got there late.

I never received a confirmation email from the office of admissions.
I called them the other day after reading all of these posts and they assured me that my seat was reserved...close call.
The only reason I could think of was because I handed in my packet and deposit personally to the admissions office.

What do you guys think?

Did you write a check for the deposit? If so, then check your bank account to see if it's cleared!

woohoo! got a call from dean heinrich this week. so pumped!!

Innnnn! Man, that phone call with Dr. Heinrich made me love NJMS even more than I already did. What a nice, compassionate person. Is anyone going to the meet-up in a few weeks?

Accepted!! Got the call from Dr. Heinrich at 9:30 last night!

Interviewed 10/14

Did you get an invite for the event?

I missed two phone calls from Dr. Heinrich today. I am presumptuously assuming he wants to congratulate me.... but I wonder if he ever gets fed up and changes his mind?

Lol, no, he's really nice. Plus it's also a committee decision so he can't make that decision by himself. Congrats!

Uhhhh no, that's not how it works. The admissions committee does not send out your acceptance letter until Dean Heinrich talks to you personally. There have been instances were students lost their acceptance because Dr. Heinrich never got to speak to them. I have heard Dean Heinrich say on multiple occasions that he takes the call very seriously. So if I were you I would either find a way to call him back, or sit by your phone for the next couple days.

He is the Dean of Admissions of course he can, If you don't answer that call, you're not going to NJMS. Think about it, how reliable of a student can you be if they cannot get in touch with you?

So I had my interview here on 10/31 - yup, Halloween, and it went well. My interviewer told me it was a good interview and he definitely liked me. Obviously I know far more is taken into consideration for my decision, but if I am accepted, when do you think I might be getting a call? It looks like the latest anyone has posted about being accepted here was interviewed 10/14, so I'm assuming maybe in the next two weeks I might here (if I am accepted)? Congrats to all who have been accepted and I hope to see you all next year!

First, I did call him back, but apparently he is also pretty busy and couldn't take my call right away. For whatever reason, my phone did not ring when he called back a few minutes later despite that I was sitting by my phone with the ringer on maximum. I have no missed calls on my phone, but somehow there is another voicemail from him from after I returned his original call. I think this is possibly because I screened the first call due to it being from a restricted number, so my phone took the liberty of deciding the second call was not important. I definitely had adequate reception and was literally sitting at my phone waiting for it to ring when I missed the second call.

Cell phones are awful at being phones. To make matters worse I live in a dead zone and can only receive phone calls on that number when I'm not at home.

I work at the medical school 4 days a week.. worst case scenario I will just go to his office.

Try not to worry. He's not going to unaccept you because you missed two calls. Call him back or go to his office when you can.

chasingdreamz, STFU you troll. Don't worry man, I know with 110% confidence that missing the call will not get you "unaccepted". Once he makes the call, the decision is more or less in the books and only the typical things that get people unaccepted can happen (ie get arrested, fail all classes rest of the year, etc).

lol this guy..

Well, thanks to the wonder of the "land telephone line", I just got the call from Dr. Heinrich!

I interviewed on 10/23, and I suppose I would have "gotten in" on 11/12 if my phone had cooperated. I would have been more sensitive to the possibility of his call, but they said expect a 4-6 week wait and I got my decision in less than 3 weeks!! It is a good thing too, because I'm pretty impatient.
