2013-2014 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In the activities question, does anyone know how we should respond to this question: "Indicate any evidence of accomplishment or supporting documentation." If it was a volunteer experience, what kind of evidence of accomplishment are they looking for?

Anyone else have Prerequisites stated as NOT COMPLETED, even though you have it all completed?

Dumb question: They ask you to fill it out later in the app.

I'm having trouble with #3, the what challenges do you think you'll face question...do you think it's ok to write about the typical challenges of medical school or do they have to be unique? I am having trouble coming up with things other than memorizing all the information etc...

I got a complete email today! (just letting me know that my LORs were received)

Secondary submitted 7/11

still no secondary! 🙁

I have a question... so when you are entering units for prerequisites do we have to convert semester units to quarter units by multiplying 1.5? Or can we just put "sem" under "course type" and just enter our regular semester units earned? Thank you

-----------------------------------------------
EDIT: I found out the answer. You don't - you just put whatever shows up on your transcript 🙂 Just in case anyone was wondering!

I had the same question a few weeks ago. I was told to submit using semester units if you are taking semesters, or quarters units if you're in quarter system. They want what will match your transcript, and simply give you the conversion so that you are certain you have fulfilled all requirements. Hope this helps!

EDIT: Just saw your edit, glad we're on the same page :highfive:

How did everyone approach the question regarding a concern the Adcoms should be aware of? I can't think of any red flags.

I'm not sure if I should be addressing this issue...but I think my MCAT is a bit of a concern...it's below 30, (still got a secondary) and I took it twice and scored the SAME score twice. 🙁 first time i scored terribly was because the night before, my family member was admitted to the ER. The second time I studied for it, I was scoring 36-38 avg on my MCAT, but was thrown off by the physical sciences section (my weakness) and kind of became too nervous and that affected my score a lot I guess...

Been asking around and some say don't address it as it draws attn to my negative aspects....but I'm not sure...anyone have any thoughts?😕😕

In my opinion, you shouldn't bring it up. It's not that you are drawing attention to your negative aspects; it's because it's something you cannot correct/improve. I would focus on examples of learning from your mistakes.

Just my opinion though!!

Just got put on hold here. 🙁 Anyone else get put on hold recently?

A long time ago. This was one of the earlier secondaries that I completed.

Interesting. Yeah I was totally complete 7/16, but I haven't been put on hold. The website just says "complete"

what does it mean to be put on hold?

It means they read your app and didn't feel the need to invite you to interview. (On the plus side, they're not ready to reject straightaway....)

In any case, being put on hold is not the best thing that can happen

what does it mean to be put on hold?

Interpret it as you want:

"The UC Davis School of Medicine Admissions Committee has reviewed your application. You have been placed on our Interview Wait-list. Each year a number of students are offered interviews from this list sometime in January. We will notify you by e-mail if an interview position becomes available."

It seems as if I may be interviewed at a later time. I am not happy about it at all but I guess that is the nature of the application cycle.

Did you get this via email or did you check the website and see it?

sorry to hear that 🙁 does that mean II's will start coming out soon?

How about the rest of you guys? App still just say complete?

First round of IIs went out this Monday! First date to interview is 8/9. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks!!! Yes, I'm from CA, UCD undergrad, MCAT between 32 and 36, sGPA=3.94, solid ECs tied to UCDMC...I was complete on 7/15 or 7/16.

UC Davis is only the best school ever! Fellow Aggie here! 😀

Congratulations on the Interview!!

congrats! was ii notification via email or status update on portal?

i submitted my secondary yesterday, but it's showing that my prerequisites are not completed even though they are.... anyone else having this problem?

JUST KIDDING. I found the submit button. Duh.

Does application to the TEACH-MS program stream an applicant in to a separate admissions review?

I'm wondering if my application (which indicated an interest in the TEACH-MS program) will ONLY be considered in a TEACH-MS context or if TEACH-MS applicants are also considered for "general" UCD admission as well.

"Waitlisted for interview" 🙁 . 37MCAT/4.0 sGPA/3.9cGPA

Kind of disappointed since the way the email was worded suggests the odds are small that people get off the waitlist. Oh well! Good luck to everyone else!

Hoping for some love from my alma mater (Ignoring the fact that the two campuses are totally not connected in anyway) :>

Reading about people's successes and updates with this school is giving me hope

Wow - sorry to hear that.

I don't mean to pry, but did you have any red flags or anything? Your stats are amazing and it's downright frightening to hear that someone so academically qualified wouldn't even get an interview offer.

Edit: Just saw your MDApps. Incredibly impressive. I'm sure you'll get in to a top school; just shocking to hear that you didn't get an interview invite at UC Davis. Best of luck to you.

No red flags that I know of! No cheating, criminal convictions, major gaps in standard extracurriculars (that I know of). The only thing I can think of is they did not think I was a good fit. I am research oriented and interested in academic medicine, and my essays and activities have reflected that. I know UCD has good research opportunities but I don't think that is their emphasis. They seem to like to talk about their family medicine, rural medicine, and diversity (I am not URM). Perhaps they felt I was not a good fit for their mission.

Thanks for the kind words. It has shaken my confidence a little but sometimes we need to be humbled. I certainly don't want to be in the mindset that I am entitled to interviews. 🙂

Edit: If you're applying, I wouldn't worry about my stats as an indicator that UCD is hyper-selective about stats. My MCAT and GPA are in their top 90th according to MSAR, and the combination of my stats may be even higher. It's wiser to just look at how your stats stack up to their posted averages, which are much more reasonable (32 or 33 average?). Good luck!

They seem to like to talk about their family medicine, rural medicine, and diversity. I grew up poor and lived in a 90% Hispanic rural community and my parents are both HS-drop outs, and I have a journalism/humanities background... but perhaps that doesn't fit their definition of diversity (I am not URM). Perhaps they felt I was not a good fit for their mission.

Thanks for the response, pyrrion. Perhaps it will ultimately be in your best interest to have not had an interview at UCD. It sounds like you will get the most out of your medical school experience at a school that emphasizes research. Many of the other UCs - and Duke, of course - are certainly within your grasp.

Got secondary this morning plan to submit tomorrow. Does Davis prescreen before secondary?

submitted everything and my app is complete, except for my letters. Is it showing for anyone else that letters are still not received?

Yes this school pre-screens.. so congrats! And if I remember correctly, my LORs didn't show up until like 5-7 days after I submitted my secondary.

Got an interview invite! Hoping that more dates open up though. Right now it looks like August 9th is the only option and I have a conflict that day...

Also August 9th is pretty short notice... Do you think they send out interviews to people that live nearby first?
