2013-2014 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sooooo...does Davis not screen? Has everyone been getting their secondaries right after 'application received?' Thanks for any insight...just trying to decide what priority to give it (screened>unscreened)

And good luck to all you heading to interviews soon!

screening hold

been scouring sdn to see if getting an ii off the interview waitlist is common or rare and couldn't really find much....leading me to believe that this is prob a form of pre-rejection.🙁

All UC medical schools screen before sending out secondaries, including UC Davis.

Sure sure, but is everyone getting their secondaries right away? Is this just a numbers screen from Davis?

Does anyone who has interviewed already this season or who will be interviewing soon have Davis' information about their MMIs that they could PM me? (Information from past seasons would also probably be more helpful than nothing!) I'm interviewing tomorrow and the way my email was worded, it looks like I should have been sent some sort of attachment or other information containing MMI instructions, but I only received the interview day PDF and the photo instructions. Is that all everyone else received? I haven't heard back from the office yet.

The interview day PDF and photo instructions are all you are supposed to get, I believe. You don't have much to worry about, they will give you some information about the MMI at the information session, and the rest is supposed to be somewhat of a surprise.

I know this has been touched on...but say you do have a lower than wonderful GPA, but you did a post-baccalaureate and have worked in clinical research, volunteered clinically and all that....would you really want to point that out to them for #1?

Its sort of a damned if you do, damned if you don't type of question, isn't it?

Good luck today!

Last year screening hold meant that they were going to use you near the end of the cycle as last minute replacements for people withdrawing their interviews. I think they only invited people who lived near the school. I was put on screening hold and then invited to interview with one day's notice and then waitlisted and then accepted!

Do you mind if I ask when the end of their cycle is? It seems like people are saying it's January (since that's when the interview holds are looked at). Does that mean by January most of the seats are filled? That seems pretty early to me!

II just right now! Complete 8/12, 39, 3.9 gpa from CA. Got the Sept. 6 date =)

Congrats to you, bestdecision.

I have to admit, I am having that "passed over" feeling from Davis. Complete 7/15, similar stats, also from CA.

Does anyone think that people who applied to various programs (PRIME, ACE-PC, etc) go into different reviewing piles?

I would imagine so but what do I know. Wishful thinking?

The end of the cycle last year was late February. I interviewed in mid-February. I don't think they pulled from the interview waitlist in January last year. Actually there are quite a few people who interviewed with me in my class this year so I guess not all the seats were filled by then.

I feel the same way. Similar stats, completed 7/29. Just normal MD path. I don't think I could've screwed up my secondaries that bad.

Probably a longshot, but for those who have interviewed at UCD SOM in the past, what did you find most useful in preparing for their MMI?

Put on screening hold 🙁 At least there's still a bit of hope...

I was complete 7/16, no screening hold. Anybody complete that long that hasn't heard anything?

I've been complete since 7/4 and have heard nothing. 3.6/3.8 c/s GPAs, 37 mcat, in state. I figure no news means I'm still in the running.

For publication links, do we give pubmed website links or the full-text article link

Yeah I was complete 7/10 and haven't heard anything. I check everyday under the message tab but I figure it might just take awhile to hear back!

Anyone interviewing on September 13th and interested in sharing a taxi from the airport? PM me.

For the first question: Any thoughts on whether I should explain why I don't have any presentations or publications or anything like that to go along with my two years of research? It was psych research and I did a lot of work with the patients while other lab members did more analysis and writing...

Basically, do you think my "unimpressive" research will be a red flag? Worth explaining?

I think you should talk about the strengths of your research and what you learned about it rather than try to point out negatives about yourself.

Did anyone apply to more than one special program? Would it be considered wishy-washy if I applied to both the Rural-PRIME program and the TEACH-MS program (urban underserved)? I have a strong interest in underserved medicine, but don't really have a preference whether rural or urban.

it probably depends on how you backed up your interest with experiences. I didn't apply to TEACH one because i have zero experience living or working with urban populations, but i did apply to RURAL and SJV because I have extensive experience with these populations.

I've volunteered in both urban and rural areas. I guess I'll apply to both since I have experiences to back them up. Thanks.

edit: quick questions about entering the grades into the secondary supplementary app. Do you enter everything or just 1 year of bio, chem, physics etc.

Just fill the minimum needed to for their prereqs. They already have your transcript.

well...seems like davis will send you an interview invite within a couple of weeks max, waitlist you, or hold on to your app. unfortunately, looks like those "held onto apps" end up being rejections at least in the last few years

For those of you who received an II, how did you sign up for the Host Program? I didn't receive any email about how to sign up. Thanks!

I'm in the east coast right now and trying to economize my flights out west by bundling them all together. Do you think it is frowned upon to wait for an available october date instead of taking the earliest september date?

I dont believe it would be frowned up per se, but youll face increased competition due to rolling admissions.

Agreed. They won't judge you for that but you will be opening yourself up to be judged against more candidates.
