2013-2014 University of California - Davis Application Thread

Hey guys,

For the question about how will you enhance the Davis community did you guys also add in an answer about how Davis is the right place for you? This may be a minor technicality but I kind of tried to do both while answering the question instead of just say how I would enhance it. Can anyone comment on if this is an ok approach? Thanks!

That sounds a lot like the approach that I took, if I remember right. I don't see anything wrong with adding why you would be a good fit, especially at a school like Davis that cares a lot about finding students that fit their mission.

Hi class of 2018 : ) I am interviewing Friday and was interested to see if anyone had advice for the MMI? I know the scenarios are top secret, but just general advice (other than be yourself)? Thanks in advance, I love the support everyone has offered thus far.

Not class of 2018 but class of 2017 instead...

Everyone tells you to be yourself, and I'm probably going to be flamed for this, but don't be yourself. Be confident. Be outgoing. Be passionate. Be considerate. Be nice. Be all those things and you'll rock the scenarios, even the tough ones.

2017 even better! Sounds like a plan : ) Thank you for the advice, maybe I will see you at the lunch?

My best advice is to embrace the scenarios. Some may be out of your comfort zone, but try your best to face them with confidence and commit to the role you're playing. Acting timid and reserved won't serve you well in many of the stations. Show them that you can think on your feet and interact well with others, and you'll knock their socks off! Good luck 🙂

Interview waitlist today. I'm a little bummed since UC Davis is one of my top choices. I know it's not a flat out rejection but it's still discouraging.

IS applicant, 3.8gpa, 33 MCAT. Secondary submitted 9/11.

sorry to hear, matt. if it makes you feel better, i was complete 9/10 and haven't heard a thing. which probably means i'll be rejected come january. (trend of the last few years threads- those who didn't hear were eventually rejected)

Yeah, I've accepted my fate too. Been complete since early August, womp womp

Been complete at Davis since mid August and haven't heard anything back. I really thought I had a chance at this school

Gotta stop by this thread once in a while to let you pessimistic applicants know that I completed in June and got an invite from here in the beginning of this month. So don't lose faith!

I have been complete since 7/15.....i think they lost my app lol

CONGRATS for the II !

Did you schedule the interview date right after you got the II? I received II yesterday, however, there are no available date yet. Shall I keep waiting, or shall I contact the office?

Thanks a lot.

very nice. ps, i don't have an ii but earlier in the thread, folks have been saying dates open up periodically. also, you could just call them they might have the dates before they've been put up

I know there's a bunch of us just waiting around without an invitation, rejection or interview waitlist designation, and I really have to say, boo on you Davis. What's the point of stringing us along if you're just going to reject us at the end of it? I hope it means we're all in the running....but....realistically, the last few years of Davis threads have had the strung along kids rejected come January.

So lame if that's their intention. We're not all in the running, they should just reject those of us they know they don't want. Right, though?

+1

Complete since the end of June, heard nothing but silence. The lack of communication is completely ridiculous and uncalled for in my opinion.

Agreed. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I think it's in poor taste, and I see no reason why they choose to proceed this way. The same with San Diego. If they know they have no desire to interview us, what does a rejection hurt them? Yeah, it sucks to be rejected, but for those of us with limited funds, its bittersweet. At least it alerts us ahead of time that those funds are free to use elsewhere. Davis, you is rude (hehe).

Not to mention, at some point Davis is going to become one of the last shots at acceptance some people have (maybe even me). Letting someone you had no intention of ever interviewing/accepting that late in the game, "no" is really unfair. That was a lot of time to spend not focusing on bettering an app

for those who interviewed already, how long did the clinic tours last? I'm trying to schedule flight times
also, if you stayed with a host, did they accommodate you for two nights?

also, any hotel recommendations?

thank you!!!

I remembr there being logistical reasons why schools don't notify you abt rejections, though I don't recall the exact reasons. I don't think any schools set out to lead people on about the whole process either.

I know it might be hard, but sometimes we just gotta suck it up and go along with how things work

Meh...don't buy it. Plenty if not most other schools are rejecting on a rolling basis. Davis needs to get with the times.

You pick one clinic to tour as per instructions and you cannot be there more than 30 minutes (HIPAA the Hippo). A few people on interview day reported that their host did not contact them until wed night and by that time they had already booked a hotel so hang in there until wed. Congrats! I was VERY skeptical but MMI was as they say..a tad bit fun ; ) Also, there is a group interview (5 applicants) with the Dean where he goes around asking everyone where they are from, what specialty they are considering and why, etc. hope this helps, good luck!

Lol you're right. Interview at ucsf > interview at davis.

But as far as acceptances go I would take either haha

And you are definitely right about all of the rest. The process makes us all crazy.

But i stand by my assertion that they should tell us they are rejecting us when they decide. There is no excuse and there is no logistical reason. Bs. plenty of other schools are doing it properly

Interview invite! My first little bit of CA love! I am so excited for this one!

Primary submitted: 7/11/2013
Secondary Submitted: 8/26/2013
Interview Invite: 9/30/13

For those of you who interviewed, how much free time was there on interview day? If possible, can someone send me their schedule for that day so that I have a better idea of what to expect? If possible, I want to make an appointment with Financial Aid.

No free time at the interview. We finished by 3 pm so you might be able to make an appt for after. Congrats!!

Interview Wait-list 🙁

Hopefully they'll decide to interview me in January!

There's a Marriott right on campus (a few steps away from the medical school)

Could you please share some insight on how to prepare for Davis' MMI? I heard it's really different from other schools' MMI and I am a bit worried.. I will interview here next week!

So you're saying there is hope for August people? 😀

I didn't really prepare seeing as I wasn't sure what to prepare for. I know we all have heard this before, but it is in fact true: there really is no way to prepare for this MMI and that's the goal. They want to get to know the real ( well.. semi real) you. As fellow SDNers pointed out above, the general idea of be nice, outgoing and thoughtful of the people you interact with is key. One thing I found helpful that a coworker of mine said was add to the backstory if it will help you. Also, research the different types of stations you might have, become more familiar with each and get a basic idea of what you'd like to get across about you in each environment. How little this is, I hope it helps. Go kick butt!

Interview Wait-list 🙁

Hopefully they'll decide to interview me in January!

I did not know that interview wait-lists existed. Did they email you that you were on the wait list for interviewing, or did you get an interview and there were no spots available?

I had not heard of this concept before!

It's just a hold. I'm not outright rejected but as of now they don't want to interview me.

The contents of the email I received (subject line: Screening Hold)
"The UC Davis School of Medicine Admissions Committee has reviewed your application. You have been placed on our Interview Wait-list. Each year a number of students are offered interviews from this list sometime in January. We will notify you by e-mail if an interview position becomes available."

Hi everyone, my interview is still a month away, but I am making flight arrangements and such.

What time was the Saturday student-run clinic tour and how long did it last? Are we talking about a half day of stuff, or is it only an hour? Also, was it in the morning, or afternoon?

Thanks! So excited to see Sacramento and UC Davis! 🙂

Hey everyone, with the 15th coming up and some ppl expected to get acceptance calls, could you put your interview dates up if you get called so we know which interview dates they've reviewed up to?

It is only a half an hour and it was at 8/9 am. PM me if you have any other questions : )

Davis does silent rejections right. I'm not even on the interview waitlist and I was complete mid-July

I remember reading that they have done silent rejections in the past. Whether or not they will continue to do it this year though is all going to speculation unless anyone has gotten an answer from the admissions committee. You never know, though; stranger things have happened. Good luck!

Hello,
I am a bit late in applying, haven't sent in my secondary today. I wanted to know my chances,
I am a CA resident, 3.58 sci gpa, 3.66 cum gpa and a 31 MCAT score and decent EC's. I had applied last year but got rejected since I had a low McAT 25.

Hey guys,

Is the clinic tour formal attire too? Still haven't received a confirmation, hmm

I'm in a similar situation and wondering the same thing.

I used to volunteer at one of the student run clinics. Everyone I gave a tour to and saw dressed professional.

The volunteers who work at the clinic usually wear business casual, but nobody there is on admissions committee so you could probably wear whatever you want.
