2013-2014 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just checked mine, still says under review... But if it's not a rejection yet, maybe I'll get lucky (also complete since early July)

First of all, congrats to all my fellow 4-8 interviewees. I posted a while ago that I live I the area, I am an alum, and I'm willing to provide transport for 4 Monday and Tuesday if needed. Pm me if you are interested or have any questions.

Do you know of any affordable shuttle services to and from LAX? Flying into their will be like $150-200 cheaper for me.
I don't from lax. Super shuttle will take you back there for $40 or so. I'd call your hotel, most of them have some sort of service or contract with someone. You could also try uber but it would be in the $100 range.

April 1st is going to be here soon, are we "under review"people just going to get the axe all at once before midnight (they said we would know BY April 1st)? Seems a little inconsistent since UCI was rejecting people regularly... Is it possible UCI is behind schedule on reviewing applicants because of the AMCAS delay?

I counted about 40 students on the day I interviewed. Since UCI ultimately accepts about half of the interviewees, getting an interview is much less likely than being accepted afterward.

My guess is they're going to axe us all tonight/tomorrow. This has been a common theme for many of the schools I applied to unfortunately... complete silence for 6+ months and then mass rejections sent out of no where.

Same thing has been happening to me and I agree with you. It'd just be inconsistent of them (since they were axing people at regular intervals as the cycle went on). Someone above just got an II today, so that's interesting.

When the axe comes tomorrow, I won't be surprised, just a little disappointed. This school is essentially my last hope for an II, but I'm not counting on it. (I've been studying to retake the MCAT and reapply this cycle.)

Maybe they'll plan another interview date for all the people that are still waiting? Probably not, but still hoping. haha

Status change on portal.

"Regrettably due to a very large competitive applicant pool we are unable to advance you through the admissions process. We wish you the best in your future endeavors".

Rejection via portal status change. An e-mail would've been appreciated.

Hoping everyone here has an acceptance somewhere!

Oh I get it UCI, that rejection I just got is an April Fools. No way you'd keep me on hold since August to only reject me on the last day possible.

So it's April 2nd... Still under review... x.x

Are you local? Maybe they are holding a couple local apps if there is a cancellation. I live near campus and was offered an earlier date because of a cancellation last minute. I look at it this way; you aren't rejected so there's still a shot! Good luck.

I'm in CA but not local.

So I received an e-mail that basically said they won't be offering me an interview or admission to the medical school, but asking if I would like to be considered for their conditional acceptance program. Any current students have any information on this? @Gaboon ?

Conditional acceptance programs
UC San Diego and UC Irvine also offer a special type of postbaccalaureate, a conditional acceptance program. Students who complete the program successfully are admitted to medical school. UC San Diego’s program, supported by a National Institutes of Health endowment, includes rigorous courses, advising and participation in the Student-Run Free Clinic Project. Students must maintain a 3.5 GPA.
“We set high standards and the students have met them,” said Dr. Carolyn Kelly, associate dean for admissions and student affairs at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. “The students do very well in medical school with the additional academic preparation. They graduate from medical school. They go on to residency training programs.”
The conditional acceptance program, which accepts four or five students a year, complements other efforts such as PRIME, the regular postbaccalaureate, UniversityLink for community college students and the Health Careers Opportunity Program for disadvantaged teens, Kelly said.
Diversity is a priority, Kelly said. “We still have a long way to go,” she said, noting that 45 percent of Californians are underrepresented minorities. “We’re trying. I think we’re making progress.”
UC Irvine’s conditional acceptance program accepts four students a year — disadvantaged students who are “gems,” said Ellena Peterson, associate dean for admissions and outreach at Irvine’s medical school. One of the former conditional students, now a third-year medical student, described the yearlong program as “medical school with training wheels,” she said.
“It builds self-confidence,” Peterson said.
Irvine, which had UC’s first PRIME and postbaccalaureate programs, may extend the postbaccalaureate program into a second summer, with MCAT preparation at the end instead of the beginning. By then, students have gained a full year of coursework leading to a solid academic foundation and have built a learning community with their peers.
“Some of these students have tried and tried in isolation,” Peterson said. “In the postbac year they find that there is strength in their peer support system.”

Basically you only take Biochem, Physio, and Neuro your first year. No anatomy, histo, etc... Then you join next year's class, assuming you do well in those courses (you have to score top quartile or something). I don't know much specifics, best to just ask for more info from the school.

Thanks. Yeah, I asked for more info in my reply to them, but didn't get a solid response other than "We'll talk later."

Approximately how fast is the turnaround after the UCI interview? I haven't been keeping close tabs on how fast people found out...
It takes about 4 weeks. It was 4 weeks for me exactly... 11/4 interview and 12/2 got the call from Peterson. Good luck!

Hey pD - If you're hoping to go to UCI, definitely accept the invitation for consideration into the conditional acceptance program. What olecranon said was right on the ball. You take several, but not all, classes with the MS1 students and must rank in the top 75% of the class in order to advance to the full MD program. The program is designed to support all of its students and most students are quite successful. This is, by design, a 5 year program. The courses that conditional students do not take during the first year are taken during the second year. After that, conditional students join the MS2 class and the remainder of the medical school curriculum is the traditional MD curriculum.

Thanks for the reply. I accepted the invitation and was told there would be interviews for the program at the end of May. If you don't mind, I have a few questions that maybe you or @olecranon4 can answer before admissions gets back to me:

If I get into the program, is it 100% guaranteed admission so long as I meet the milestone requirements (and do I have to submit though AMCAS again)? Are you saying that this program is sort of like taking MS1 over the course of two years? Do you know if it's only those several classes with the MS1s, or is it some MS1 classes AND additional non-MS1 classes? Is the stipend is enough to cover housing, or would I need to/be able to get a part time job to make up the difference? If you know anyone who has been in the program, how did the extra year affect their step 1 studying (pro: more time to study, con: more time elapsed between those classes and the test)?

I'm still waiting on 5 schools for decisions, but the UCI program really seems like the best option to spend the next year (vs. UC Post-Bacc consortium or continuing to work) in the event that I don't get in. Thanks again for the help.

It's guaranteed admission if you don't mess up. Yes, it's basically giving you an easy version of first year to see how you can handle it. You take Biochem first, then physio then neuro- so you only have one class at any given time. There are no other requires classes. It should be about as hard or easier than undergrad. I personally feel like you can do a part time job no problem, but that depends on you. Most conditional students retake the classes when they get officially accepted, so that they don't forget it all for MS2 and step 1.

All your other questions- I have no clue

Gotcha, thanks a lot for the info!

Hey guys,

I interviewed on 2/27, but still no decision yet (no phone call or update on status page). It seems that some people already got a response from the 2/27 interview group. Anyone else in the same boat as me? Thanks.

Has anyone been accepted who didn't hear right after four weeks? I interviewed on 3/10 and didn't hear anything yesterday, should I assume its either a waitlist or rejection?

Long time lurker. Just got accepted via email. I honestly gave up here bc I did not think I was going to get in.

How did you all go about thank you notes? Did you just email them to the admissions office to be forwarded to the appropriate interviewer?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I emailed my interviewers directly, but I had their contact information.

When do we get the finaid package? And is there an accepted students Facebook page?

And is anyone else here deciding between Uci or ucsd or USC??

I know UCI is H/P/F, but does this mean students are ranked internally for AOA purposes based on the first two years? Do other schools that are P/F in the UC system also rank internally based on the first two-years?

I would uci or ucsd over usc for sure. And between uci and ucsd, I would pick ucsd because of the amazing facilities, location, and overall I got a better vibe from there on interview day.

Hey guys, I just checked the financial aid website and my offer was up!
