2013-2014 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It took me 12 days after they acknowledged receipt to get a secondary. If you're good in terms of mcat score, you'll probably get one.

I've heard they screen out any subscores of less than 10. (I could be wrong, but its what I heard and seems to match up to MSAR reports for 10th percentile--if there's nothing below 10, 10th percentile is 10, correct? I don't know, my math/stats isn't the best).

They absolutely do NOT screen out subscores less than 10

I think its safe to say that I stand corrected 🙂

I would have to say uci was strange for me. I got a secondary from ucsf davis and la within seconds of receipt acknowledgment. But took almost two weeks for Uci, and still haven't gotten anything from San Diego

Omg. Everyone ignore what i said. I'm dumb. I just realized i had added uci last week and got the secondary the next day. I was doing the math based on the other schools

Wow. Apparently I'm getting kooky after all these secondaries

Niiiiiice, congrats! If you dont mind, when were you complete? And I'm assuming you got the invite during the week?

Thanks! I was complete 7/30 and actually got the e-mail at 10 PM EST Saturday night.

Checked on-line status. Thank you. Very excited! I live only an hour away.

what's the general turnaround been on how long its taking the not-auto-screened in secondaries to come in?

i'm a reapplicant and was rejected last year after a day without a secondary 🙁

i was really late (like october verified) so thats something. but this year i've been waiting a while. i see rejections happening, so i was just wondering how long its been taking for that to happen/to get a secondary
Sorry. I think my reply (being so wrong) kept your question from actually being answered by people. For what its worth, mine only took a day. But when I scrolled through some of the other pages, it looks like its taken some people a few days. If you haven't been rejected yet, there's still hope!

Thanks! I'm hoping I'm not too far in or too far out of the reject window. About a week out right now.

This whole process is nuts- getting harder to keep the faith! I might need therapy at the end of all this haha
Ahaha. Ditto

The interview day here is really relaxed. Good luck to you all! 🙂

Question! Does anyone know how to access the secondary application. ? I tried to access it to review the essays I wrote for my interview next week but it says something along the lines of "cannot view after secondary has been submitted". If anyone knows how we can look at secondary answers after submitting them please let me know! Thanks!

As far as I know, once they're in, they're in. No look backsies : (

Submitted my secondary about a month ago and haven't heard anything yet. How long do they take if they reject you?

There are people on this thread who reported being rejected within 2-3 days. Patience, friend! 🙂

can any current UCI students comment on what kind of clinical experience you have your first two years? Thanks!

Interviewed here yesterday. The best food provided compared to all other interviews I have had! Haha.
But really awesome environment, great facilities (brand new medical education building and hospital). Bummer is that the hospital is a city away :/. Other than that and the mandatory lecture attendances, definitely all around great opportunities for med students. Looking forward to hearing from them! Hopefully an acceptance! Good luck everyone.
Oh also interviews are really laid back.🙂

Secondary complete yesterday, OOS lizzy M = 68. Does anyone have any Primary vs. Secondary vs. Interview stats available?

Haha well out of 1231 primary OOS applicants, 62 were interviewed. Guess I'll keep my hopes down.

has anyone who interviewed here not completed the upper division bio course pre-req?

Current UCI MS3 here :hello:. Sorry I'm a little late to this thread, but I'll try to answer any questions when I can.

thanks! can you talk about the clinical experience in the first two years?

They actually started this after my year, but now they have the 1st years go into the hospital in the beginning of the year. This had a lot of good feedback, so now the 2nd years have their preceptorship in the hospital as well. Perhaps some 1st or 2nd years can comment on these programs.

When I was in second year, we all had a primary care preceptorship (mine was family med), where you'd gain experience seeing patients on your own, which I really liked. There were 6 half-day sessions spread out throughout the year. But now they've changed it so the 2nd years do this preceptorship in the hospital setting.

Another opportunity to get clinical experience early on is volunteering at the UCI Outreach Clinic, which is a student-run clinic for uninsured patients. They have an MS1/2 paired up with a MS3/4 seeing the patients before the attending. I volunteered at this clinic a lot and really enjoyed it.

Edit: We also have simulation sessions throughout all 4 years where we get to practice clinical scenarios. These are a lot of fun. Our ultrasound curriculum is also another hands-on learning opportunity in first 2 years.

I'm assuming approximately half of those 1231 OOS primaries were given secondaries so don't keep your hopes that far down (or at least that's what I'm trying to tell myself).

Just got an II. I'm really local so I'm pretty stoked 🙂!

Congrats! (Impressive stats, by the way  )

When were you complete? I'm dying for an ii because this is easily my top choice! (I'm very local as well 🙂 )

Thanks, haven't had news from any schools in like a month so I was freaking out a little bit (in my pre-application delusions I expected to know where/if I will be attending medical school by the end of October... LOL).

I was complete for Irvine in early August, so take that for what it's worth... I know a lot of schools aren't 100% chronological so I wouldn't fret if you were complete prior!

Anyone by any chance answer their "major accomplishment" question with academics? Just wondering if anyone did and if this is frowned upon. I mean we did spend essentially our entire lives on our academic goals.. Thanks in advance

Better to just be honest. If you really feel that your greatest personal accomplishment is academic in nature then write about it. As I said before in this thread, if you're honest about it, chances are you'll end up writing a better essay.

was it by email or did you check your status? i'm tired of checking my status everyday...

I received an e-mail on 10/15, but on my status it said they awarded the invite 10/14... so I would just keep waiting for an e-mail rather than checking your status all the time! That extra day of waiting is worth it.
