2013-2014 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do any current oos med students have any insight for someone considering this school? I'd be moving across the country and worry that because most of the students are from California, it may make for a difficult transition. What's your take? During my interview I didn't have a chance to talk to any oos students...

Not OOS but am familiar with the area. Irvine might actually be one of the most boring places in so cal, as almost all of the land in the city is owned by the irvine company and they try and make it as family friendly as possible. If you are married/have children this is a safe and convenient place, but if you are young and want to go out occasionally you'll have to leave the city. However, Great weather year round and close to a lot of things. California is pretty laid back so I feel like there shouldn't be too much of a culture shock. Except for the huge population of Asians in Irvine if you're not from somewhere with a lot of Asians.

I've lived in Irvine for a LONG time if you have any questions.

Thanks! I guess I meant the student body--are people generally welcoming and willing to "take in" oos students despite the fact that the IS students are likely from the same areas and have a lot in common? I want to make sure it wouldn't be alienating to not be familiar with the Bay Area or all of the other popular places ppl were from at my interview day! And also, my lack of surfing ability (or desire to learn to surf)--gotta make sure I would "fit in" a little bit haha!

Were you there on Monday? I also couldn't believe how many people were there from the Bay Area! I'm from San Diego, but lived in Boston for the past 8 years and now live in Nashville, so I don't think of myself as a true Californian I guess. Let me know if you have any questions!

I don't go to Uci so I can't say about whether they're accepting, but if you're not trying to surf why even bother ??

Kidding, that's just a stereotype. I'll be willing to bet that more students here don't surf than do.

Haha yeah...I was just kidding about the surfing btw! Most of the people I met during the interview didn't surf 🙂

Has anyone from the 10/9 interview heard back yet?!? If so, was it a status update online or did you receive an email first?

I sumbitted my secondary august 3rd and still under review... just too much silence for my comfort, im assuming rejection for this school...

Don't give up hope. There are posts on last cycle's thread (2012-2013) for UCI indicating that UCI was sending out IIs as late as March for folks who were complete in August and September:

II on 3/21/13 though complete on 8/21/12
II on 3/13/13 though complete end of Sept. 2012
II on 3/8/13 though complete Aug. 2012

They've been sending rejections to people this year so the silence isn't necessarily a bad thing.

What about people who have been complete since mid July? 🙁

Nope not yet. I am OOS, so I am staying conservative with my expectations.

Thanks for the update.

FWIW - UCI doesn't officially give IS preference, so don't give up hope yet! My hunch is that they tend to accept students from undergraduate institutions with good reputations. The UCs certainly qualify, but so do many OOS schools.

This forum has been quiet lately. Does anyone from the 10/9 interview group have any acceptance news?

I was at that same interview date 🙂 I called the admissions office recently and was told that Dr. Peterson's daughter was getting married and so there's a delay in getting out acceptance info. I was told that the results should be coming soon!

Man this thread has been slow, no updates from those who have interviewed?

See my above post! The dean of admissions was busy, so everything is delayed/backed up. Therefore, it'll be a little slow, but hopefully things will pick up soon so we can have some action on this thread 🙂

Has anyone been rejected lately? Or anyone heard of an II? It seems odd that there's been hardly any activity lately....plus it's almost the holidays so should we expect silence for the next 1.5 months?

That is a happy reason for the delay! Congrats Dr. Peterson (assuming you like the gentleman). Certainly better than no movement because we are all terrible applicants who deserve to be kept suffering in limbo as long as possible.

That's funny, that was my response as well 😀 yay for happy occasions and us not all being awful lol

Did the admissions office mention when they would resume?

Do you know if this applies to IIs as well?

Just got a status update via email. Alternate list. Pretty bummed but there's still hope...I just like having my options up front so I can make decisions and not have the next 4 years of my life be so up in the air! :/ good luck to the other applicants though!

I've been complete for about 2 months now and still need to take statistics. However, I haven't received an II or rejection and am not sure if I should go ahead and sign up for it for next semester. The admissions office has been really nice and said that if you haven't been rejected yet, then you are still being reviewed and could be offered an interview up until the end of March. Does anyone have any advice- if I should request for an expedited decision or should I just bite the cost and take statistics? Thanks in advance.

Depends on how competitive you feel, and if UCI is among your top choices. Personally, I would wait to take a summer course before matriculation. If you can't do that though, I'd take stats on the off chance that I get in (or worse, in case I have to reapply next cycle since a lot of schools req. stats or calc )

I agree. I say to just take it because it's the safe choice.

Just got placed on the alternate list... interviewed beginning of november

Interview invites seem to have really tapered off, but now that I think about it I didn't ever see the level of activity in this thread as I did in others.

I hope they pick up again for a little surge before the holidays. I'm still holding out hope for one.

It looks like from last year's thread that there were some II's around this time/week so let's hope for that!

Finally got the ax here, complete 8/25

II received today

complete mid september.

Is the pre-interview stuff mandatory?

II just now. (so excited to see the "awarded" I nearly jumped out of my chair at work!)
have been complete since 9/14/13...so there's still hope!

The strange thing is, though, that I haven't received an e-mail about it (only status update)...has this happened to anyone else?

Congrats! When is your interviewed scheduled? Just want to have a general idea of when interviews are scheduled up to right now

Thanks! I scheduled mine for Jan 6th; the other dates they also had available were January 16th and 27th, I believe (or one or two days off of that, i don't remember the dates exactly)

Since they're only scheduling January so far, I think there are still going to be lots of II coming out! So there's hope!
(Which doesn't seem to be the case for some other UC's I was hoping to get an invite to:/)
