2013-2014 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At my interview, the dean mentioned that, when students are placed on the wait list, they are also ranked high/medium/low and applicants cannot and will not ever find out what their ranking is.

Ah ok. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Okay good to know! What's the interview day like?

UCI had among the best interview food out of the schools I've been too. Mmm the brownies. Also free pizza the night before! The rest of the interview day is like most other schools. Tour followed by a presentation followed by interviews at either the main campus or the hospital.

We haven't finished reviewing all complete applicants for interviews...but we're really close!

Okay, thanks! Is the admissions committee rejecting applicants as they go, or will they send mass rejections after all the II's have been sent out?

Folks who don't get an II are notified of their statuses promptly so that they can plan their schedules accordingly. Those who are neither accepted nor placed on the wait list post-interview are likewise notified promptly of the Committee's decision.

Do you know what interview date(s) the committee will be reviewing next?

There are two meetings this week. Yesterday, we reviewed applicants who interviewed on February 10.

You've been so insightful on this thread, thank you!

Do you know how many interview dates you guys have left?

Another curiosity question: Do you have any idea how many UCI alumni apply? I haven't seen anyone from UCI on the interview trail and you said "a decent proportion of our matriculants come from Cal and UCLA."

We have 2-3 dates left depending on the final tally of invitations extended.

With regard to my comments about a decent number of people coming from Cal/UCLA, if you look at data over the past 5 years that holds very true. Last year we had a good number of UCI alums, too. However, in previous years, this number has hovered around 6. In terms of UCI alum applications, I don't have a number on that...but there are quite a few because I read a lot of UCI applications.

The 2013 entering class looked like this:

UC Berkeley: 16
UC Irvine: 13
UCLA: 10
UCSD: 10
Stanford: 5
UCSB: 4
Notre Dame: 3
USC: 3
Brigham Young: 2
Johns Hopkins: 2

There were 36 other schools (most OOS) with 1 representative apiece.
All undergrad UC schools were represented.
6 of 8 Ivies were represented.
2 of the major Institutes of Technology were represented.
4 Cal State schools were represented.
The military academies were represented.

Are applications reviewed in a random order or in order of completion? I've been complete since late July, but I'm still "under review." Just wondering where my application stands. According to your previous posts, if you haven't been rejected yet you're still under consideration, correct?

Same... Under review since 7/29 with no news. I'd love one more shot at an interview!

Same here! I would love to interview at UCI!

Does this mean that people from the Feb 10 interview have already been called if they were chosen for acceptance? Or do calls go out later?

The wait until May 15th is gonna be brutal for this one.

My application status says "under review" -
*Review in progress. We ask for your patience while we thoroughly review your application. A final decision concerning your interview status will be made by April 1st. Are they done handing out interview invitation?

It's correct that if you haven't received notice of a rejection, you're still under consideration. Final decisions should be coming pretty soon. Sorry to keep you in suspense!

The Dean of Admissions tries to call soon (within a week or two) after decisions have been made. She's known to like Sundays...

They rescheduled Second Look from April 11th to May 12th? That's absurd. I had scheduled my flight and everything, and changing it would be $200. Ugh.

That's really interesting that Second Look was scheduled so early in April, considering the fact that they supposedly review files up til April... My condolences to you about the plane ticket though. 🙁

so if we haven't gotten an ii or rejection yet, shoudl we just give up? do they have any more interview dates?

Curious as to why there's not a large representation from UC Davis grads?

So does "under consideration" mean we have not yet been reviewed, or is UCI known to review students and then silently waitlist them for an interview while reviewing other applicants? Any info would be helpful ^_^

Second one. You should be able to find more info on 1-3 pages back in this thread. 🙂

So i get the feeling there is going to be one huge list of rejections coming soon, ugghhh ive been trying to call in but no one answers for some reason

If you are under review and have not been interviewed yet, then it will be a rejection. However, if you are under review and received an interview you should be hearing back soon. All candidates that they are going to interview this cycle have already completed an interview. Hope this helps

I interviewed at the LAST interview date of the year, which was this past Friday March 7th. If you have not been scheduled for an interview before then, then I'm sorry to report that you will not be granted an interview. If they need more people to fill their quote they will be pulling them from people who were interviewed and added to the wait list. Also, UC Davis is good at getting back to people within 2-3 weeks of their interview to let them know about their status: accepted, wait listed or rejected. Good luck to those in the running. Also good luck to those who were not accepted here but have other options available to them.
What does UC Davis have to do with UCI?

OH, I see. So sorry, I searched UC Davis and somehow selected UCI. Please disregard my previous comments.

Just got an II this morning. Must have come in late last night, because I never received an email regarding status change. There's still hope. Scheduled for Apr 8.
