2013-2014 University of Colorado Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hmm I wonder if decisions are coming out today.

Congrats! Any branch news yet?! I am guessing that since you didnt mention it that you were both accepted to the main campus?

Congrats to the people who received acceptances today! I hope those who have yet to hear back get some good news soon!

Main campus here too. At my interview day they explained that acceptance decisions are made without consideration of your campus preference. Once accepted, those who had expressed interest in the Colorado Springs campus would be considered for that group. They made this point several times. Made me feel better about not putting in for the new campus.

On last year's thread, we can see that people received an email after March 31, saying the deadline had been extended into mid-April. Any bets that we're gonna get the same this year?? My point being that while I'm in the same boat of getting excited/nervous/anxious/paranoid about an email coming through in the next three days - there's really no guarantee we will even if we're "supposed" to by the 31st 🙁

So ridiculously saddening - especially for those of us here who interviewed literally 6 months ago!

Meanwhile, you should learn something fun

If you are accepted and you panicked for 6 months, that's 6 months you will never get back. If you were not accepted, well, that's a double loss.

So my brothers are trying to get me to play this game called league of legends. 😀 - he calls me a feeder

Congratulations to those re-applicants who were just accepted. Kudos for sticking with it. Like many here, I'm still waiting for a decision (IS, interviewed back in October) but as of right now I'm going to assume the worst. I didn't receive any interviews at any other schools so I'm starting to think about next years application. I was wondering what those who reapplied and got in did differently the second time around? Did you guys use the same personal statement and secondary essays, or did you tweak them or start from scratch. Did you do anything else that you thought was really helpful to your application this time around. I'm a non-trad with extensive clinical experience and military service but a weak undergrad record from a decade ago that I'll hopefully have remedied with a strong performance in recent postbac coursework and a masters program this year. Thanks and congrats again!

I chose a new topic for my PS and rewrote it completely (as sourdoughllama noted, the secondary was a different prompt from last year). They claim they can't see your previous application, so you can probably get away with not rewriting, but I'd strongly consider it. Also tweaked my EC's a bit from last year--included some things I hadn't thought were important before and dropped some things I had. Had many more clinical hours this year than last. I feel like the biggest difference for me was a much, much improved interview experience this time around. I was better able to articulate the things that were unique about me and my application. I felt like it was a night and day difference.

As others have said, it's not over yet! There may be more acceptances forthcoming on Monday and Dr. Grenardo said they accepted 80 students from the waitlist last year. Also, if you do end up reapplying, make sure you can talk about what you have done to make your application stronger when they ask during your interview next year.

Good luck!!

I rewrote part of my personal statement, but I kept my introduction and the overall tone. It really depends on if you feel like this is a weak point in your application. I also incorporated recent experiences into my personal statement to reaffirm my commitment etc... I added new ECs and a few new publications.

The biggest difference for me, however, was submitting much much earlier. I didn't even interview with CU last cycle, which really hurt being IS. If you do end up being WL or rejected you should know that your app was good enough to get an interview, and an early one to boot.

Also, practice interview skills. That was something that I did and I feel like it helped a lot.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks to everybody who took the time to respond. I really appreciated the insight. To everybody who is still awaiting a decision - good luck tomorrow/next week/whenever CU comes out with their decisions!

Just checked my status page. It now states, "Thank you for interviewing. It is possible that some applicants may be advised of final decisions at some point in the future. Perhaps."

When did you interview? If anything that's probably not a bad thing (except for the longer dang wait, of course); Mine hasn't changed.. Hopefully that doesn't mean a rejection is forthcoming in the next hours for me!

I'll just leave this here...

Is anyone planning on calling if we don't hear anything? I'm at least expecting an email saying they are extending the deadline.

Even though that would be the professional thing for the school to do, I wouldn't hold your breath. It sounds like last year they extended the deadline after it passed.

CU is up to its usual tricks. If I get a rejection on April Fools I might dropkick a baby.

Edit: Two minutes after I posted this, some 303 number called me. I was all fist-pumping and doing a victory dance before I answered the phone.

It was the CU Alumni Foundation.

Sounds like you need a baby to dropkick

That is why I blocked their number after the 56th call to donate money.

What do you guys make of this? :
"4. By March 30 of the matriculation year, March 15 for M.D.-Ph.D. programs, each school or program have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the AAMC Section for Medical School Application Services."

It's not inconceivable that the school has fulfilled this requirement. The Facebook group has 125 members (with a few current med students). I would guess that a decent chunk of accepted students haven't joined the group and that some acceptances have been declined, considering that 80 students got off the waitlist last year according to madod.

Just got this link in an email; seems to be a "recommendation" rather than a requirement.

Not that this is any consolation, but the admissions at CU has been going though a bit of a transition this cycle. Dr. Winn left last summer and Dr. Grenardo came in as an interim dean. They also merged the admissions office with the student life office. I think that this lack of communication and delay has a lot to do with this transitional phase. This is also why the secondary was sent out so late this cycle.

It still is irritating though. I don't think anyone is really having any luck with communication from the admissions office. I have been trying to get a hold of them regarding financial aid and it has been radio silence for two weeks and the financial aid office has told me the issue is on their end. Hopefully things start to get sorted out pretty quickly for everyone's sanity.🤔
