2013-2014 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi all! I just got an interview invite and decided to browse this thread prior to choosing a date. I didn't realize, however, that OOS tuition was so exorbitantly high. I'm currently sitting on 3 IS acceptances, waiting on word from another IS interview, and I have 2 other OOS interviews pending.
My question to everyone (student/applicant, IS/OOS) is, is it worth scheduling an interview at UIC given the latter?
Congrats! When were you complete?

Thank you! I submitted the secondary on 10/18. I tried checking my status afterwards but I had the wrong link, so I'm not sure when my status changed from submitted to reviewed.

I think I can speak unbiasedly as you are OOS and you wouldn't really affect IS interviews, but why would you want to interview here? Is UIC your dream school? Would you love to be in Chicago enough to pay the tuition? What are your reasons for wanting to attend over your acceptances?

Also do you know what your status was before receiving an II?

In all truthfulness, I applied to UIC because I heard it was a great school to apply to as a Hispanic (Mexican-American) student. Plain and simple. I didn't know much about the school prior to applying.
Factoring in the tuition, I'm now certain I won't attend - after all, my top IS school just accepted me. Thanks for the questions, I think they drove the point home.
Btw, I didn't know my status prior to receiving the II. Sorry!

No problem, congrats on your acceptances though! My application status just changed from applicant (is) in process to application is in process. For the most part this seemed like am ominous sign, although I will contact admissions tomorrow because they said I would hear back by this week, though it might be delayed because of the weather.

Was just hoping for some in state love =/

I can't remember wear I read this or who told me, but I'm pretty sure accepted Latino/a applicants receive in state tuition. I would call the admissions office to verify this though!

Does anyone known how we fulfill the Hep B From pre-enrollment requirement, are we supposed to just send a copy of our immunization records??

Well admissions officer said I should know by today, tomorrow, or the end of next week. Apparently a decision has been made but it's not in the computer yet. Not expecting good things.

I looked through the financial aid section of their website and everything I read leads me to believe that this is most likely false. As with any other school, you must be classified as a state resident prior to matriculating to be considered for IS tuition.

Just got an interview invite and I was complete 7/24. There's still hope! Only available in Rockford and Peoria (I live in Chicago) so that's kinda disappointing.

Congrats, what day did you end up choosing?

2/06 was the only option I had. Not sure if I'm going to go though, just looked at the CoA and it's crazy even for IS!

Do you have interviews/acceptances for any other school? Because in my openioin 36k tuition isn't too high for a medical school

I do. But actually 36k isn't the true cost of tuition. UIC is the only school that I've seen that charges extra for the 2 years (M2 and M3) that you stay over the summer. So adding the additional 11k the cost is 47,000 without fees etc. That seems pretty steep to me for a state school.

Here's where I got my info http://www.medicine.uic.edu/UserFil.../File/Financial_Aid/1314/1314_COA_Chicago.pdf
Yeah once the summer is added on it does seem a little high. But yeah if you're not going to go to UIC even if you're accepted, I suggest letting somebody else get the interview spot. I already have an interview scheduled at UIC so my response is pretty unbiased. What's your top choice? if you don't mind me asking

Yeah, it's absolutely ridiculous that tuition and fees at my state school is around 40k/year. I'm going to Texas instead; 16k tuition/fees can't be beat.

I think the adcom met today. My status changed to "A final decision was made on your application on 01-09-14. Please allow two-weeks to receive the correspondence in the mail. If you do not receive this correspondence in two-weeks, please contact the Admissions Office. No decision will be given over the telephone."

Pre or post interview?

Hey everyone,

I'll be interviewing at the Chicago campus in late January and am trying to make hotel reservations. Any recommendations on a convenient hotel to pick near the school? Where have other applicants stayed if you're flying in? I'll be coming from O'hare...

I received the status update post-interview, and interviewed in Chicago on 12 November
This troubles me. I interviewed early November in Chicago - and I am still Decision Pending.

There are a couple hotels a few blocks away from the college. I have never stayed at any of them but here are the two closest to UIC College of Medicine "Chicago Marriott at Medical District/UIC - 625 S Ashland Ave" and "Rosemoor Hotel - 1622 W Jackson Blvd".

You can also look into student hosting, or if you're flying to O'hare you can always stay at a hotel close to O'hare and take CTA Blue Line to UIC before the interview. Speaking of which, what day are you interviewing?

Has anyone who received the post interview status final decision update 12/20 gotten their mail yet?

Nothing yet here!! I'm guessing they sent them out yesterday or even today since someone else posted they hadn't gone out as of Wednesday and admissions said sometime this week so I'm not expecting anything until next week. :/

Same here...still waiting! Dont they know the wait makes people crazy? I will have no hair by next week...I am hoping we can get mail by next week...

I was complete 7/22
II 1/09!!!!

I'm super excited for my interview in Peoria and I was wondering if anyone had any insight or experience interviewing at this location. Also, I called the admissions office and spoke to a counselor regarding bringing an update letter to the interview. He told me it wouldn't be necessary because it wouldn't be forwarded to the admissions committee and that I shouldn't worry too much because after receiving an II, admission is entirely complacent on the interview. So essentially, all interviewees are on a level playing field. Has anyone else heard anything like this?

A lot of you seem to be asking these questions, so hopefully this helps:

UPR interviews: All, as far as I know, are panel format (combination of faculty and medical students).
-I personally interviewed at Peoria in 2010 on the last day of the cycle - April 20 something (it was BEAUTIFUL there in springtime!). It was an afternoon interview, you started with lunch, then presentation + tour, and then interviews. It was a panel of 4 for me (2 MDs, 1 PhD, 1 M4).

Chicago Interviews: One-on-one (combination of faculty and medical students).
-Due to the amt of applicants interviewed, there are two interview shifts: morning and afternoon.
-All applicants eat lunch, tour, and attend presentation together in the middle of the day. Morning shift goes home after that, afternoon shift begins interview after that.

Additional file information: at this point does not help much...If you are invited to the interview, that is what will make or brake you, not some update letter, CV update, etc. Be the best you can in those interviews, with each interviewer, no matter how good or bad you think it is going!

Good Luck!

So the adcom meets this week but people were already receiving IIs last week?

I got my acceptance in the mail today!!! Just to confirm, to anyone else who got it -- there was NO enclosed site preference card? I'm not at my permanent home so my dad gave me the news but I'm not sure what all was in the envelope. I'd hate to be late on submitting my preferences.

Also, to anyone who felt like they had a bad interview, don't give up hope! I completely bombed my interviews at Peoria while everyone else around me raved about how great they had been :nailbiting:

Edit: I live in the suburbs an hour from Chicago in case anyone wants to know!

Anyone from outside Chicago (but IS) get their letters?

_Edit_ I just did today. Great news 🙂
