2013-2014 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
👍 Hahah, UMichigan seems so chill; that's how I answered it too.
I really love how transparent and relaxed their admissions office seems to be. I believe that this helps applicants feel more open to sharing their true passions, be it research, cooking, or quidditch. Very excited to interview.

Good stuff.

Given that I got an interview invite here, do you guys think i should pull out of a few of my safties?

I made a WAMC thread a while ago, and recently updated it, asking this question.

The Notre Dame game is the day after the first interviews! Too bad tickets are $300+ 🙁

Speaking of which, I lol'd at their admissions tracker powerpoint when I got to the #8 school in applications (27 ND students have applied to UM so far)--turns out football rivalries don't hold when it comes to the medical school admissions process.

I think the tickets were under $100 (somewhere between 70-90 per ticket I remember seeing) for ND alums--I didn't apply for tix, however (probably wouldn't have gotten them, anyway, with the weighted lottery).

Michigan, here I come!

AM I believe. Their twitter said they were only giving out about 2 dozen II's today. Good luck everyone!

Yep, and mostly OOS. Congrats to all who got one today! Waiting game continues here.

Same.. Waiting game continues..

They just sent me an outright rejection today after interviewing here last year. Yikes

Sorry... as a re-applicant at 2 schools where I interviewed, I know how that must feel. 🙁

Was it pre-secondary or post-secondary?

Who's excited for 333 today? :luck:

What time zone do they go by, anyway? When is 333 for us Pacific Timers?

Two interview invites on one day was too much to hope for. Crossing my fingers for Tuesday...

No news here either!

Congrats on the Ohio invite, Sisko!

The "most people don't know I can ____" question is giving me so much trouble!! If it was phrased differently I could say a number of things, but I'm having a hard time thinking of something that fits that phrasing and is only 4 words long. 🙁

I agree...I had trouble with that one too. It would've been better if we were given the opportunity to write the whole sentence.

I agree completely! Or at least have the option of completing the sentence, "Most people don't know ______/Most people don't know I have _____".

I've done a lot, but talking about my abilities is difficult to do in 4 words.

Finally came up with something unique and submitted last night, though. 🙂

I highly doubt it's a very important part of the app so don't stress too much about it. They just use it to create a profile list of who else you're interviewing with and the profile list of everybody who's accepted. Your picture, email, school, year, and those 4 words will be on these profile lists.

I really don't think they're going to use it as the deciding factor of whether you get rejected/accepted/interview invite.

Last year some of the 4 word blurbs didn't make sense and I think there was an applicant accepted who didn't even fill it out (not 100% sure about this though).

This. It really doesn't matter what you say, it's just something fun for when you meet other interviewees.

Also, to you guys worried about not getting an II on the first day, chill. I got invited in mid/late August last year and was accepted Oct 15, so you guys are still golden.

For all veterans interested in applying to Michigan, their board of regents just authorized a change that will give all current and honorably discharged personnel (active and reserve) in-state tuition status. Combine that with the maxed out Yellow Ribbon program at the school, and the UofM just turned into the default-cheapest top 20 med school in the country for most veterans.

This is awesome!

You call that a 10:10 Tuesday? All quiet on the western front.... 😴

I find Tuesdays and the weekends I've zero activity on my application email address. Nada. It's like this dead zone of all 32 schools I've applied to. Come to think of it, application is a lot less exciting than I thought it would be...

Complete since 7/10. At this point I'm happy I haven't been rejected yet  Just a few more hours until 3:33! Who's still hoping for some love? :luck:

Complete since 7/19 and I totally agree with both of your statements. 🙂

Meh I suspect they haven't worked their way down to my gpa yet. I'll just keep waiting...

Did anyone apply with FAP? My fee waiver isn't showing up... do I have to contact anyone to take care of this? I was just verified, so maybe it just has not registered yet?

It should show up automatically! I wouldn't worry as it probably will take a couple of days!

Congrats to those who got invites!

I'm a prior applicant (who just finished year 1 elsewhere), here to give what I honestly believe to be an absolutely crucial piece of advice for everyone who ends up interviewing here. And that advice is: BE PREPARED TO TELL MICHIGAN THAT THEY ARE YOUR #1 CHOICE. Sorry for the caps, but it's that important.

I was in-state for Michigan. I went to Michigan undergrad. My stats were top-tier quality, and I had all the sexy ECs. I got an auto-invite! (I also went on to interview at 4 other top-tier schools.) All 3 of my interviews at Michigan seriously went extremely well...

Despite all of those details being strongly in my favor, I was left to bleed out on the wait list for the duration of the cycle. Looking back, I believe there was only one point on which I could have been viewed as being less than an optimal choice for Michigan, and because that point is one that was clearly of the utmost importance to them, I am led to believe that it is the primary reason I was not accepted.

Obviously that reason is that when I was asked what my top choice is, I evidently didn't tell them what they wanted to hear. My approach, I am ashamed to say, was to actually be honest, if you can believe that. I mean, who wouldn't go to Harvard if they got in? And if you take the time and money to apply to a school, and accept their invitation to interview, isn't it quite obvious that you are very interested in attending? I thought that honesty would be the best policy in interviews, and that interviewers would have to respect that, but I was wrong in Michigan's case at least.

Anyway, what will happen during your interview is that all 3 interviewers will without fail ask you what school is your top choice (they have a work sheet to fill out), and if they are like my interviewers, they will already assume that your answer is going to be Michigan (Michigan's motto is that they are the 'leaders and best,' and I can't even count how many times the admin told us that during his presentation). They are doing you dirty here, folks, because if you would choose to go to the number 1 school in the nation over the number 10 school in the nation if given the choice, there is no right answer for you - either you lie, or you keep a clean conscience and hope you get in elsewhere.

So when they ask you where you want to go (they WILL ask you), tell them what they need you to say, and give them convincing reasons. The only other advice I would give for Michigan's interview is to hang around and chat for a long time at the end of the day (they'll have soda and desserts set up for everyone). It seems very informal, and a number of people will leave immediately, but you are certainly being critiqued even at this point - so hang around, chat with other applicants, chat with students if they are around, and definitely chat with the admin.

Alright, that's all I have to say. Good luck with the whole process, everyone, I hope you all get into your top choices!

Interesting that they're required to ask that. Did you say that you had another top choice, or did you say that you didn't have any (as in, you were impressed by multiple schools and couldn't possibly pick right now blah blah blah)?

Really don't think this is true. I didn't get asked this by any of my interviewers nor did I hear about anyone else being asked this. You must have just gotten unlucky to have 3 interviewers to ask you this. Michigan knows that people will attend Harvard, UCSF, Hopkins, UPenn over them. That's why they offer full tuition scholarships to those who get accepted to schools like that.

On the other hand what if you do get asked what your top choice school is? Say you're dating some girl and she asks you "am I your top choice for a girlfriend?" What do you think will happen if you say "no, some other girl is"? You answer the question by saying Michigan, if it is indeed your top choice. If it isn't, then you can say something like oh it's definitely one of my top choices and then you can explain why (i.e. the things Michigan has to offer) and that kind of answer would make you look so much better.
