2013-2014 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What annoys me is their application tracker still says only 43 interview offers have been extended...

No update on their twitter, doesn't look like any IIs went out.

Yeah, I'd be curious to see how the updated admissions tracker looks now. I'm sure they've given out 100+ interviews by this point.

But honestly, even if they only update it once every three months -- it's still WAY more transparent than most other med schools so I can't complain haha

"Substantial number of interview offers" today, per their twitter. Ready for another anxious wait?

Check your status on the secondary website. You won't get an email about the interview invite til an hour after the status change.

Very true. I received my II email at 5 pm but saw my II status at around 3:33.

First II and super stoked! Would advise peeps to check the app (have not received an email, nor is the secondary website updated).

AMCAS verified 7/17, secondary complete 7/25, OOS

I haven't heard back from them yet. Completed 7/19. Should I just move on? I really wanted to go there :-(

Safe to move on once they either A) Stop handing out interview offers or B) Close your file ... it's not over 'till it's over.

I guess this silence is making me nervous

I just got an interview invite, but I have not even submitted the secondary!

Good sign, I guess???

Super excited, Michigan is one of my top choices!

Congrats! 😀 Michigan gives out IIs based on your primary (they don't need your secondary or LORs) -- but yes, obviously a good sign to get the II regardless 👍

Relax. It's still super early in the cycle, they'll be sending out plenty more invites in the coming months.

Why would you move on (a.k.a close your file). It's not like there's any work to be done. Only a few II's have been given out. Don't let SDN convince you that you don't have a shot. It's not over until they officially say it is.

Lol wut? Can someone confirm this please? I know they have an automatic invite policy but that's for 38+ (OOS) 36+ (IS) and 3.8+ GPA coming from what they deem a "prestigious university".

They discontinued the auto-invites last cycle. Given that I (and others) have received invites without a secondary or LORs or both, I stand by what I said 😛

Oh, I skimmed over that part that said that. Dumb question, sorry. Your LizzyM is extraordinarily high, though! I'm sure that had a role.

Interview invite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3.86, 38, IS. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!

No news yet, but still happy to be alive! Hoping against the odds for an II.

If that's the case, why did I waste my time and money on a secondary? Why not send secondaries with interview offers? Maybe some primaries are so awesome they can stand alone, and some people get considered with their secondaries? Maybe they will pick this question up for their twitter 🙂

Has anyone applied before and gotten an interview after being passed over multiple times? I've been complete for about a week and a half and they've had my primary for a month. Stat are all above the average for the interviews they have offered so far for out of state.

I'm not sure, but I've effectively written off this school as a rejection; looking ahead and focusing on the schools where I still do have a good shot.

UMich admissions is the best, I love these stats. Anybody know the interview format here? I saw that they do 3, 30 minute interviews- does anybody know if they are blind? So excited for my interview, the more I learn about this school the more I love their program.

I believe interviewers cannot see your stats (GPA/MCAT) but can see other parts of your application. I was mostly asked about activities I listed on my AMCAS.

Just a forewarning, this isn't necessarily true. I applied last year with a 36+ and 3.9+ and did not get an interview. Instead, I was stuck on the "file complete - under review" status from July-February, when they eventually closed the remaining open files.

Good luck to everyone applying!

Last year, a month after my app was complete, I was given a status that indicated that my file had been read and I was not going to be given an interview at that time. I thought for sure my chance was over because not only was I passed over, they actually updated my status to say that they didn't want to interview me. About two months later, in November, I was given an interview invite. I interviewed, was accepted, and I will start med school at Umich next week!

So for anyone worrying about being passed over - be patient. You've done your part, and now you must wait.

Also, regarding secondary applications - I remember that they said on their twitter last year that the secondary applications are incredibly important. So while they may give II's to some applicants with just primary apps, I would recommend that you all spend time making sure that your secondary app shows effort and tells them more about yourself.

@UMichMedAdmiss "Secondary applications are incredibly important. They pay my salary and the salaries of a few other admissions staffers, so in order to keep collecting those fees we need to dramatically overstate their weight in the admissions decision."

/snark

Fwiw, I'd they just wanted the money they'd have a secondary without essays as many other schools do. Director Ruiz is pretty vocal that they care more about the secondary questions than stuff on the primary.

Complete: 7/23/2013
Interview Invite: 8/08/2013

Complete- Aug. 5th
Interview Invite- Aug 8th
Interview Scheduled- Sept. 27th

Interview!!! 🙂

Was starting to lose hope. Complete 7/10, last optional LOR received 7/15

I still don't understand this process. My app was finally verified on August 7. I got a secondary invite from UMich on Aug 9 at 4am, then an interview offer on Aug 9 at 2PM. But I read on here that it is not an auto-invite policy? So they really reviewed my primary within 2 days and decided to offer me an interview?

Edit: Changed Aug 8 to Aug 9.

That is insanely fast. I wouldn't question any II, especially from UMich.

Another 10:10 Tuesday. With the silence recently, maybe this one will be a big.

such a tease, Michigan. if you want to let me know about a leadership initiative you should invite me over to visit and do so in person!
