2013-2014 University of Texas - Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wanted to ask to gauge the committee's progress this year. At our interview date, he made it sound like the Nov. 2 interviewees might only get reviewed depending on how productive they were. So they may be behind this year.

I know UTSW gives out a large percentage of prematches on 11/15. I'm curious...if someone has an interview on/shortly after 11/15 what is the liklihood of pre-matching before 12/31?

I'm a fellow applicant but I don't see how that wouldn't depend on the strength of your application & interview.

I don't think anyone is going to be able to give you an exact %age

If you look through previous years' threads, about 200 people pre-match on Nov 15. Then nothing happens for a while. And the next prematch day is about Dec. 15. At the match, very few people are accepted.

Later on tons of people get in off the waitlist. People guessed close to 100. But you also have to remember that everyone who interviews is either accepted or waitlisted.

Greetings! Current UTSW MS1 here. Just wanted to stop in and wish everyone best of luck with the interview cycle and upcoming pre-match. Although I've only been a student here for the past three months, I know enough to say this is a truly great place. If you have any questions about my experiences or anything in general, let me know and I'll try to answer everything as honestly and without bias. 😀

Thanks for taking the time to post here and offer us your advice and perspectives, I'm sure I speak for most of us when I say it's appreciated.

Out of curiosity, could you hazard a guess as to what proportion of your class pre-matched vs were picked up off the wait list?

To answer your original question, yes Nov1/2 will be eligible for the prematch since it runs from Nov 15-

What kinds of financial aid did you receive from UTSW?

Im sure someone else will ask this, but when did you interview and when were you accepted?

I don't think I can give out any exact numbers, but it seems like my class is a good mix of those who pre-matched and accepted off the waitlist. If I could take a guess, it almost seems like about half of the people I had a conversation with this within my class were accepted off the waitlist. I believe when I had interviewed, we were told that there's frequently a large amount of waitlist movement in April, May-ish. For those who don't get a pre-match offer, I'd say you chances are still good!

Personally, I did not receive any financial aid from UTSW as I don't quite quality for need-based. I know a good number of my classmates who got money from the school (both large and smaller sums), but I can't quite comment on exactly how generous the financial aid office is either. Personally, coming to this school was a great financial decision as tuition and everything in the area is quite affordable (rent, parking, etc) compared to other schools I visited in TX.

I interviewed in the latter half of the cycle (late November), did not receive a pre-match offer, but was accepted off the waitlist in mid-May.

I'm so scared that I will be disappointed in 30 mins 🙁

good luck all!
for those of you that don't prematch today, there is still lots and lots of chances to be accepted post-prematch!
FYI: i don't think UTSW sends out the emails until tomorrow morning!

🙁 they got them at midnight last year. Guess I won't be blessed with this honor...

There should be more accepted people posting? I guess they are too busy being all excited!

Sigh... 🙁

But congrats to all accepted!!!!
Don't lose hope, it's only the first batch of acceptances 😉 More acceptances are to come. (not to mention the match and the waitlist movement)

Did anyone who was accepted have their interview on 11/9?

For OOS, if we didn't hear back today, when will we? Is it basically waitlist?

I am proud of those accepted! You all are going to live the dream!

Congrats to everyone who got accepted!

I had a question for current UTSW students or anyone with a good answer.
I interviewed here the first interview date and my stats aren't amazing but surely good (36, 3.84). My extracurriculars are good in my eyes (I know my eyes aren't deciding if I get in; pshhhh I wish), and the biggest thing I am lacking in is research. In fact I've done none. UTSW is still my number one though for reasons other than research but from previous threads I've seen that after November 15th, the only people who get in pre match are those that interviewed later in the cycle.

So my questions are: Do you know of anyone or are you someone who got in pre match after November 15th, and interviewed earlier in the season?
What do you think my chances are for getting in through the waitlist? (I also noticed from previous threads that a lot of people coming off the waitlist were from later interviews).

Thanks 🙂

I interviewed 11/9!

Wow talk about quick turnaround. I wonder what that means for the rest of us who had late interviews. I interviewed on 11/2 - at first I was thinking there's a chance we hadn't been reviewed yet, but now I suppose that's not the case. Oh well - plenty of time to go.

Congratulations on your acceptance!

Yes I did. My stats are pretty similar to yours, and I had a september interview last year and was accepted the following may. Actually a LOT of my classmates were also in the same boat. And there are lot of them who don't have any research experience.
But here's the thing, everything you have done up to now has been under your control: grades, mcat, interview, extracurriculars, etc... The tough part now is just to patiently wait for the admission committee to pick you off of the list of people they have interviewed. It's tough and I have been through the same process last year of neurotically checking my email around certain dates.
My advice is this: looking at your stats you will certainly get into UTSW and BCM, but be patient and WAIT! Don't second guess your application and stress yourself out! Enjoy the last couple of months before med school starts!

There is hope in the darkness!

Accepted! Very non-trad, september interview 3.9/35 Good luck to those still waiting and congrats to those accepted!

I'm sure a lot of people on here can relate but sometimes I can be way too hard on myself. This process is teaching me to remind myself what's important. That I even had the opportunity to interview here (and I have 7 more months to enjoy my life lol). Thanks for your reply and your reality check. I spent the last 3 hours second guessing my app instead of enjoying a beautiful day. Time to go eat, do yoga, go to work, and enjoy time with family.

I'm a long time SDN lurker and I know I'm not the only person checking SDN's various school specific threads neurotically so let's all collectively just friggen revel in the fact that we are a minority in the world even getting an education and an even smaller minority applying to medical schools in the hopes of spending the rest of our lives helping others.

FOR EVERYONE ON HERE THAT IS FEELING DISHEARTENED OR JUST PLAIN SUCKISH, THESE LINKS MADE ME FEEL MUCH BETTER AND GRATEFUL THIS MORNING. I HOPE IT HELPS Y'ALL! 🙂

To feel grateful and remember why helping others is our ultimate goal no matter where we end up:

Haha not quite as exciting as other news some are receiving from UTSW today... But I just received an II for January 11th! Looks like I'll be squeezing in an interview here after all! Good luck to all those still waiting!
