2013-2014 University of Texas - Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was hoping someone could shed some light on this:
I am an OOS applicant, and I interviewed at UTSW on November 2. I haven't received a pre-match offer, but I have interviews with Baylor and UT Houston coming up in December and January. Say by the off chance that I am accepted to one of these schools and end up withdrawing later, would I still be considered for the UTSW wait list past May 15? I tried to call Ms. McLane about the matter, but she was in a meeting and her secretary accidentally hung up on me. I'm kind of scared to call back!
Do call back, UTSW admissions office is very friendly.

if you didn't prematch on nov 15th but interviewed before then does that mean you basically need to wait until the wait-list movement in May since UTSW matches very few people?

damn... I'm impressed with your vast amounts of knowledge Gandalf. Tho maybe I shouldn't be surprised since you are a istari...

Im a reapplicant so I know most of the ins and outs of the process for most of the schools... but lets go with your reasoning lol

Not to be a dick or anything, but you have no idea about how the rest of the process will turn out and have no right to tell someone they will have to wait till May to see if they got accepted. No OOS (or maybe not many) have reported acceptances whereas last year they did. Someone on last year's thread said they matched to UTSW on TMDSAS. Every year is different, and anyone could get an acceptance at any time the school finds it fitting. Just because you're a reapplicant doesn't give you insider information on whats going on in that admissions office right now.

If you did indeed talk to an Adcom member and they said they wont be accepting anyone until May from the waitlist, then you can make that claim

I did indeed ask the faculty during my interview and they specifically mentioned that they have a large prematch day on 11/15. and rarely do they accept people after that day until the match ( where they also rarely match anyone ) and most of the remainder comes off the waitlist.

So yes, I do know what I am talking about. If I had to guess, I would say you interviewed here but werent accepted during the prematch? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news if you didnt prematch here.

My claim wasnt directed at OOS applicants since they do not go through the pre-match/match.

I dont post much about my II/acceptance/rejection statuses on SDN, I was just stating that there is possibility someone gets accepted largely before May and try to lighten the mood around here. Not trying to start an argument or anything. I'm sure there's someone who interviewed early, didnt get a prematch on Nov 15th, and will still get a prematch. Maybe that person doesnt use SDN and wont post, but I think I read that happened to someone on last year's thread? Dont exactly remember though.

Okay, I just spoke with Ms. McLane. I asked her specific questions about the prematch process and their typical acceptance patterns throughout the cycle. While this information is, due to the nature of the process, not extremely illuminating, it is more authoritative than our speculation. And there are a few pearls of wisdom here that might prove interesting to those of us still waiting for a decision.

She confirmed that the bulk of their prematch offers went out on the 15th. However, she said the Committee is planning to have several additional, smaller waves between now and mid December. Crucially, and I made sure to clarify this point, each time offers go out, the entire pool of applicants will be reviewed. This means that the later prematches are by no means reserved for candidates who recently interviewed; all interviewed applicants regardless of interview date are thus still very much in the running to prematch between now and around mid December when she confirmed that they will most likely cease extending prematch offers.

Ms. McLane also verified that very few people will receive new offers via the match. When I asked her if she could speculate as to what proportion of the class would be accepted off of the waitlist, she compared it to Vegas (and told me if she would make a lot of money there if she could answer that question). Finally, she stated that Southwestern typically makes somewhere between 350-380 offers in sum to fill their class of 230 students.

That's all I got. I honestly did not expect the office to be so tremendously helpful and receptive to questions; I've done my best to share what I learned with everyone else who is still waiting. I hope this helps. Best of luck to everyone and again congrats to those who've already gotten offers.

".....Southwestern typically makes somewhere between 350-380 offers in sum to fill their class of 230 students. ..." are these In-State numbers or overall?

Because a distinction between IS/OS was not made I believe it is a total.

When does UTSW typically stop giving interview invites? Also, do non-interviewed applicants get an official rejection notice soon (mid-December) or is it later in the cycle?

It is total (330-380). So there are 290-340 IS acceptances given and over 200 are in the prematch.

Since my interview invite was for Jan 11th, they're either done or have one more coming since our match rankings have to be submitted by Jan 21st.

So I am about 97% set on UTSW. (The only things that could change it is if I got money from BCM, which is highly unlikely).

I checked out the prices of the Med Park housing and for a two bedroom it would only be $575 per person. At such a low price, with the money I'm saving from my job this year, I will be able to pay the entire year's rent upfront! :O

How soon can we get in on this housing? And is there a facebook group already?

Wow! That is really good price for 2 bedroom.

Although I don't live in Med Park, a lot of my classmates do and love it. I know that the rooms fill up very fast so try to give them a call when you get a chance to see what the process is to snag a unit. By the spring time there will likely be a waitlist for units. Finding a roommate later should be a non-issue.

I'm happy to see that you're close to set on coming here! UTSW is an amazing and special place. Hope you see you next year and congrats again!

I see. Thanks Gandalf!
(I haven't received my acceptance letter yet... and I live in Dallas!)

I live in Dallas too and got my acceptance letter last Thursday... with a scholarship! Yay!

Congrats to everyone else who got accepted! And to those who didn't hear back yet, I've heard many stories of students being accepted to UTSW through May. One person I know was accepted 2 days before orientation started in August, so don't lose hope! There will still be plenty of offers.

Accepted!!! Just now!! Interviewed 11/16! In state.

In! OOS! Interviewed late sept. Lizzm 77. Will be hard to turn down a med school this good at a tuition so low 😍

Major Congrats!

Did you just receive the notification? If so, then it would seem as if UTSW is staggering some of its prematches.

Just got accepted!!! Interviewed Nov 16th - LizzyM score = 68. I am so excited! This will be my school!!!

thanks! yup just got it. was worrying I was going to be waitlisted after being passed over during the first round Nov 15th

Just got accepted!!! Interviewed on October 5th. So excited!! Does anyone know whether they send scholarship info (if they offer you one) only with the acceptance letter, or if it also comes with the initial email they send?

Congrats everyone, you all deserve it! Let me know if you have any questions. Relax and celebrate before med school starts and enjoy the holidays!

I think they only send it with the letter. However, some people were notified later in the process that they received scholarships based on last year's thread.

Congrats to those accepted today, I can't wait to meet all you guys and gals in next year's class!

Accepted!! OOS 4.0/36
Looks like I'll be turning down those other interviews 🙂

I have several questions about housing around in Dallas. Are there any particular neighborhoods within driving or biking distance in which it would be worthwhile and possible to purchase a 3 bedroom house for 100-150k? I know it probably wouldn't be the nicest neighborhood, but I'm just looking for safety and convenience. Alternatively, where should I look to buy 1 or 2 bedroom apartments in a nicer part of Dallas?

As far as social life goes, is it better to live closer to campus to be closer to your fellow MS1s?

I am actually really curious about this too if anyone has any input. I am looking for neighborhoods to purchase a house (150-175k) but I am nervous about finding a nice neighborhood close to the school lol.

Inwood on the park and colonial reserve are pretty nice apartments. Others have apartments in hp/the arts district.

For housing I would look north into where loop 12,183, and 35 merge, this is a great hub to be at. Look off west Irving boulevard (east of dfw airport and west nw of utsw). Irving boulevard also provides a great way to get into campus as it will take your straight to inwood

Is there a reason you are looking to purchase a house vs renting?
And congrats to both of you on your acceptances!

Yeah, we want to purchase so that it is an investment. Money we put into a house will come back and help us later vs. renting. Congrats on your acceptance too!!

I debated with that idea as well, but finding a decent house between 150-175K is going to be difficult.

I agree, the interiors that I have looked at seem nice, but I am nervous about neighborhoods (and I am not familiar with the city at all). I'm sure that a realtor can help, but if not then we probably will try and rent.

Similar mentality. As an OOS expecting to pay 50k to a private school, 15.5k tuition basically means 150k less loans than I was expecting. That money could be put into a house. At 500 dollars for rent, I would expect to pay 20k over med school. If I bought a house for 150k, having 2 roommates would bring in 40k and the house would cost a net of 110k. With renting, that money is lost, while the 150k invested in the house is equity, and, assuming the value of the house stays around the same, I can get that money back sometime in the future.

There are many other benefits of having a house vs renting, including control over appliances, furniture, lawn, being your own landlord. Of course, this added responsibility could also be a downside.
