2013-2014 University of Texas - Southwestern Application Thread

So, keep your hope: 1/4 students are accepted from waitlist.
Just curious...where did you get this figure? Is this based on last year's data? Apparently, this is the first year they've rejected people post-interview, so I'm curious what the odds are now of being pulled off the alternate list.

What? I'm not getting why people are saying they never have rejected people post-interview. They have to reject people post interview.
They interview ~750 people and only ~220 matriculate. They likely accept ~400 since many will choose another school.
So they wouldn't put ~350 people on the waitlist; that's just silly. Lol

From previous thread, someone mentioned about 20-25% in the class. Every year may be different but I just want to say there is still chance so do not give up your hope. I think the odds should be higher if certain amount of applicants were rejected.

Wes Norred specifically said to my interview group (November 2) that people are rarely outright rejected after they interview. Now many applicants will ride out the wait list and be rejected, but that's not quite the same. Silly as it may be, that's how he put it to us, and that's how it has seemed in years past.

Wow that's crazy to me! Lol good to know I guess.

If you'll look up-thread, you'll see many high stat candidates have been rejected post-interview this year. Compare this to last year's thread where everyone was put on the alternate list, and people didn't receive rejections until 6/1.

I was trying to say that the rejections above were unusual/unprecedented because of that reason. I didn't really put any context there 😛

Well I had a pretty strange interview experience that's why!

sorry to hear that! i thought my interview experience was ok except my second interview was supposed to be blind but the second question he asked me was what my mcat score and gpa were! so that was weird.

Wow that sucks. I had the (really nice) guy who asked about health policy and stuff (which wasn't my favorite), but he made it clear that the numbers stuff wasn't important to him. He was basically like, "you were invited for an interview, so clearly you're qualified. We're just going to chat about other stuff."

For those of you who have been rejected post-interview, did you rank UTSW above the school to which you matched? I'm really surprised that they rejected after the interview, especially since it doesn't seem to be numbers-based.

I'm am OOS 4.0/36 and have not heard a peep since being complete back in the summer. Other OOS applicants from my school have been put on alternate lists or rejected. Anyone else in my shoes?

Coug_96, I thought if you have interviewed, you received a rejection email or an alternate list email, no?

Right, but I know someone who didn't interview who got a rejection email. I figured I too had been rejected since I never interviewed, but I never got a rejection email.

Well, you can't get accepted without getting interviewed... And if you haven't interviewed....

Thank you, I think I understand that principle. I was just stating that I thought it was weird that I hadn't been rejected considering I never interviewed

I think this is the most problematic of this medical school application process. We as applicants spent inordinate amount of money, time, etc to submit applications. And there is silence. At least, we should be told of the outcome, whether it is favorable or not.

I agree. I interviewed at UVa on a Tuesday and was accepted on that Friday. They even rejected people from our group on that Friday. It would definitely suck to be flat out rejected right away, but I would prefer that over being drug along into May or June.

I do agree. 4/7 Texas schools I applied to never said anything and are obvious rejections at this point. Two actually said no. Luckily UTSW is my favorite Texas school by far, and I was fortunate enough to interview.
But how can schools not send the same generic email to every person they reject?! Silent rejections are definitely not cool.

Yeah I have a friend who has to start studying for the MCAT again (because he feels that is the weakest part of his app) before he even knows for sure that he is not going to get into a school.

Dang. That's so rough.
I am seriously screwed if I don't get in. I will have to do some kind of SMP and retake my MCAT also (my numbers aren't all that great). So I will have to take 2 years off! I'm definitely not ready to apply again this coming cycle. I have only one new thing about my application (which is partly why I didn't take a gap year).
I do have another interview next Thursday, but I have one waitlist and one deferred decision (which I'm hoping I can turn into a yes).
So I'm kinda scared right now! If I get 0/3 I'll be really sad. Lol

Are you a TX resident? Where are you waitlisted and deferred (if you don't mind sharing)? I'm sorry things haven't gone your way. Hopefully you will find out sooner than later what path you are headed down, and I hope that path is to be an MS1 this fall!

Oh I'm an open book lol. Waitlisted here at UTSW and deferred at Tufts.
Interview next week is at Temple.
I appreciate that a lot!
I'm super optimistic, so I am hoping they all become a yes! :-D
But I love all of them and would be thrilled with any of the 3.

Oh! And yes I'm actually a Texas resident but I go to undergrad at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

Well good luck at Temple, I applied there also (on a whim) and I never heard anything back haha. Philly would be a cool though

Hang in there peoples. There is always hope! I know great folks who did not get in their first try--they are still doctors today, and love what they do. Also know a surprising number (n = 2) of high-speed pre-med's from my undergrad who got in to good schools first try and realized all too late that they didn't want to be physicians. Keep faith, and if the transition year(s) happens, don't let it get you down! You can still be an amazing doctor, and don't let anyone tell you that transition years are a waste--life happens and you roll with it. A good set of contingency plans ease the impact tho trust me.

And in the meantime I will have my fingers crossed that you get good news!

I'm a Texas resident also and went to undergrad at JHU. My numbers were pretty poor so I didn't apply right away. Instead I came back to Texas and got an MPH which is something I wanted to do anyway (whether I did while in med school or separate). I figured doing it earlier rather than later would let me get a head start on it, improve my application, and give me time to study and retake the MCAT (which I personally think was much more doable during my grad school years vs. undergrad). This cycle was my first time applying and I matched to UT Houston, got waitlisted here, and am still waiting to hear from Baylor. I don't regret taking that time to get my MPH at all and I feel like the knowledge and the experiences I received will enhance my qualities as a physician. I agree with lithe that if you need to take a transition year/s it will still help prepare you for what is to come. However, I'm hopeful that you will get good news sooner rather than later!

That's great! Congrats on the acceptance! Super cool that you're from Texas and went to JHU also.

I just didn't want to take a gap year because frankly I can't afford a masters or any of the cool things most people do! I'd have to get a job which would be harder considering I'd have to find a 1-year one lol.
I just didn't want to do that! I have a good application overall, just less competitive numbers. I haven't gotten rejected from any interviewed schools, so I'm happy about that! 🙂

Hi Coug,
Recent lurker and felt like responding to your post. Did you receive an email at the very beginning confirming receipt of your application?

When I first submitted, I didn't receive a confirmation email from UTSW like I had with my other schools. I waited a while then emailed admissions with my information to make sure, and I just happened to receive a confirmation email the next day. I'm convinced they somehow lost / misplaced my application. Maybe the same happened to you? :/

I didn't get a confirmation email --I don't think. I emailed the office asking about the status of my file a day ago and a couple hours later I got the rejection. I guess they could have lost my app, but I doubt they would admit that. It's easier to just reject me I guess.

I doubted they lost your application because it is through TMDSAS, computer transmission. The email confirmation might accidentally went to spam file. I found mine in spam file.

Yeah doubtful it was just lost, but definitely not in spam. This whole application process has me checking spam just as frequently as my inbox. But oh well, I'm happy with the schools I've been accepted to/interviewed at. Your loss SW!

Yeah mine was definitely not in spam, I checked. I agree that the likelihood of "losing" an electronic application is extremely low, but I don't think the admissions systems are foolproof either. At any rate, I hope that is not the case here. Congratulations on your other acceptances!

Anyone hear anything from UTSW waitlist-wise? I REALLY want to go here!

No word here. I'm OOS on the alternate list. I'm still hoping and praying I have a chance here still and since people were actually rejected post interview this year hopefully that raises our chances of an acceptance.

I haven't heard anything either (IS), but from what I've heard before it seems like most of the waitlist movement happens in May.

Thanks for the match info! Looks like waitlist movement (that we know of) started last year in early April, so maybe I'm just being too antsy.

Does anyone know when financial aid packages come out?

Does anyone know when financial aid packages come out?
In the beginning of April. At the second look, we were told that they were trying to send out fin aid packages by April 1st.

Lets hope so. Its either the 1st or the 15th from what I remember.
Definitely the 1st; he actually made a joke about fin aid packages not being a joke even if they arrived on April Fool's day.
(I.e. he didn't *promise* they would arrive on the 1st, but he said that was the fin aid office's goal. If not the 1st, then early April.
Also, it may depend on when you submit your FAFSA; if you submitted it late, you may receive your fin aid package later.)

This might be old news but be sure to check your UTSW email for the financial aid information...that's where I have received all my correspondence so far, and it says awards will be released "mid-spring." My regular (admissions cycle) e-mail was not CC'd on this correspondence.

Hahaha, people like you are the reason UTSW has such a gunner, arrogant reputation. Come on man.

Esp. since places like UTMB better prepare their students for Step 1 than UTSW does.

Not sure if serious or sarcastic..

Serious. UTMB's medical school is known to have completely changed their Year 1-2 curriculum for the specific purpose of raising board scores. It has been successful in achieving this. UTSW has not changed their Year 1-2 curriculum to be more conducive to USMLE Step 1. They still have a traditional subject based curriculum.

If i recall, UTMBs average was 238 vs UTSWs 235. Not much of a difference to attribute to the curriculum definitively.

It comes down to a matter of preference... Id rather lose a few points and learn the material to use it more effectively in my career versus learning material taught to pass the step.

I didn't say they teach to the boards, leaving out everything else you need to be a physician. Try reading what I typed again.

Haha, @DermViser gets a lot of heat in school-specific threads. But the truth is, he does have a point. As great as UTSW is, its curriculum is not particularly exciting or innovative. Though, considering the difficulty of evaluating match lists etc, it's hard to compare student outcomes between schools.
