2013-2014 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not sure when second look day is this year, but just so everyone is aware they only extend an invite to people with multiple acceptances, but you do get to bring 2 guests with you if you'd like (parents, etc). Could be different this year but for last year they had different activities for the guests. While the accepted med students toured the clinical skills center and got hands on experience with some surgical skills (laparoscopic stuff, suturing, etc), sim patients, and more, the guests had several informative lectures on living in Detroit, safety, and a tour of the medical school. There was lunch provided and a lot of the school clubs and groups had a fair set up where both guests and the accepted students could learn more information about extracurricular opportunities. Overall I really enjoyed the second look day! And there is an essay competition for students that attend the day (write it beforehand and turn in when you arrive) with the chance to win full and partial scholarships (extra incentive to attend!).

This sounds amazing. I'm there!

Still alternate list for me as well

Just placed on the alternate list on 2/26.

OOS. GPA 3.87 MCAT 32

A little bummed - I really liked Wayne State at my interview, and I thought it went well. Anybody here sent in a letter of interest after being placed on the alternate list?

Yes, sent in 2 different updates over 2 months, they do send you a confirmation it is "added to your file". Have no clue if anyone reads it though.

Curious if anyone in this cycle did Wayne State's BMS program (SMP-type grad program)? PM me

Just found out they switched from having decision dates in March and May to a single decision date in early April.
Apparently they plan to finish interviewing in March. Unsure if that affects my odds at all.

(FWIW, I'm non-trad, IS. GPA 3.72, MCAT 36)

Did you get accepted anywhere else?-

Wasn't there one decision date for April already? I can't remember....

According to the admissions office, it was supposed to be one in March and one in May (none in April) for this year, then they changed it to April only.

Could be good news for those already interviewed if they are done interviewing in March. Less chance that the new candidates will end up on the alternate list ahead of you. It all depends on your ranking on that list and how soon they will get to your name once spots open up.

And most of the movement up the list happens in May, which is still excruciatingly far away.

Where did you find out about this date switch? I didn't receive any notification. They are required to have offered acceptances to at least 100% of their seats by March 30, so I don't see how they could get rid of the March date. I doubt they already made 290 offers by February, with a whole month of interviews left.

I asked about the remaining decision dates after I got my decision letter. They said they will have one more offer date in April rather than one in March and one in May.

Are you sure they're required to have 100% of their class by March 30?

Yes, it's in the AMCAS rules- they must have offered acceptances to at least the number of seats in the class.

All the schools follow the October 15 "recommendation." And the email sounds to me like they are moving up the May date, not eliminating the March date. That's how I read it.

I considered that possibility, so I followed up--they said only early April.

Agreed! Hopefully we'll hear good news then, rather than waiting for people to give up acceptances in mid-late May. 🙂
Amen to that. I am dreading the possibility of a last minute thousand mile move.

So do we know if they'll start rejecting people after the April wave, or will we just be on the waitlist for all of eternity if we don't get an acceptance in March/April?

Sounds like they've scrapped the March date and will let the remaining interviewed applicants know in April. This doesn't mean that the waitlist will start moving in April. People on the waitlist will probably have to wait until after May 15th to hear something.

So if the above discussion is true... and the decision date in fact has been moved.... this leads to the question....

Has Wayne already accepted "a number of students at least equal to the number of the student body"?- as stated by the AAMC rules

If so, doesn't that mean that those who have just recently interviewed (and those that will interview in the upcoming weeks) are essentially just interviewing for alternate list/waitlist positions?

I don't see how that's possible- basically that's like telling those candidates "you have 0% chance of being accepted outright, and we are just keeping you as reserves."-

The university accepts a lot more students than they have seats for, because obviously not all of those accepted will end up attending. So it's possible that they have already given out acceptances "equal to the number of the student body," while still intending to give out more acceptances in April

Yes, the MSAR says they gave out about twice the number of acceptances as seats last year.

Hey everyone, I finished my M1 year here a month ago. Let me know if you have any questions, and good luck!

I am currently doing my undergrad and going to be applying next cycle. Do you know of any students with lower than normal gpa and decent mcat score get accepted? I know it will be hard me to get in, but wayne state does have a pretty big class, I would like to try my luck.

Depends on how low, what else your application has going for you, etc. Yes, there are people at Wayne with lower-than-average GPAs. One of the biggest things at Wayne that can help someone with a shaky start is to have a few solid semesters of high grades in science courses. If you don't have that, and your GPA is well below the matriculant average, it would probably be best for you to take a year or two gap to do some post-bac work to get some solid 4.0 semesters in, to prove to med schools you can handle the material. Good luck!

Wayne is still sending out interview invites for anyone waiting in silence, received one this week after being complete in August.

I've already paid my seat deposit for another school but I would really like to go to wayne (currently on the alternate list). If I get pulled off the list after the May 15th date, is it okay to drop that seat and go to wayne instead?
That's fine. One of my friends did it last year at a different school.

Absolutely. That is why waitlist movement can happen anywhere up until classes start, because people drop last minute, meaning others are pulled off waitlists last minute, so they drop their lower choice schools last minute, so that school has to pull someone off the waitlist, etc. Happens every year, don't worry at all about dropping another school's acceptance if a higher choice accepts you after May 15th off their waitlist. You might lose your deposit, but that is probably worth getting into a higher-choice school. Good luck!

They still do release a portion of the class every acceptance release day, so there definitely are open spots right now. But that said, there are also a bunch of people on the waitlist, so interviewing later means you are being compared against more people (you interview and have to be placed against everyone who interviewed before you, making it more competitive). How you described it in the last sentence of your message is how it works at basically every other school and why rolling admissions is such a b*%&*, but also why it's such an advantage to apply and interview early. But there is that looming May 15th date where everyone with multiple acceptances has to make a final decision, so just like everyone is saying there will be hella movement off the waitlist then. It's just hard to see the movement if people don't post to SDN.

Schools know from history how many people they need to interview/accept to yield the class that they do, so the admissions experts are the ones who have that figured out and the ones making the decisions about interview dates. So maybe more people applied this year than in the past and they didn't feel like they needed both dates.

So if the above discussion is true... and the decision date in fact has been moved.... this leads to the question....

So I still have a month before I'm supposed to hear back from Wayne, but was wondering if any of you guys know what the waitlist movement looked like last year? How many people got off?

MSAR says 700-something acceptances for 290 matriculants.

There is apparently a great deal of wait list movement at this school, so for those on the wait list, there still is plenty of hope. Can scroll to previous page for better statistics, but once you've interviewed, I think it's like a +65% chance for OOS and slightly less for IS to be accepted eventually.

Ok, thanks for the responses guys. I really liked this school so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.:xf:

Me too! Everything I've learned about the school makes me think WOW, they made it just for me!

I was complete first week of September and still waiting on an interview. This is ridiculous - they keep telling me my app has been reviewed and I thought I had a good chance, but still, no dice . . .

I'm in the same boat...I submitted all my materials in early October and I haven't gotten any correspondence whatsoever. I'm debating whether I should call/email the admissions office or just patiently wait it out. It's a double-edged sword because while I would be expressing interest in Wayne State, at the same time I'm sure they get tired of looking at applicant messages and responding to them...any thoughts from anyone who has attempted this method?

Hey,

I decided to send an email update to Wayne a while back (with a significant new accomplishment). I got an interview call a few weeks later. I don't know if my update and letter of interest helped at all or if this was just a coincidence. Either way, I feel like it doesn't hurt especially if you only email them like once or twice. Good luck 🙂

Can any Canadian currently attending Wayne or accepted give an opinion about my situation. I had an interview in late January, I thought it went incredibly well, and I have been put on the wait list ever since. Stats: 3.89 GPA 12/10/12 Q MCAT. I have reasonable ECs with lots of research with abstracts and upcoming publications. Do Canadians normally get put on the waitlist and if so do when do they normally hear? Mid May?

Whoa, I know two doctors who happen to have graduated from both schools! From what I've heard from them two they're fairly similar in many aspects. (I know that doesn't help.)

Take a week or two from deciding from the two (don't think about it at all) and come back to it. See if that changes anything. Then take another week off and see if THAT changes anything.
They're similar enough that I doubt you'll regret whatever decision you make, so take your time- the key here is to convince yourself. Honestly they're not that different other than location.

Oh, and take internet advice with a ton of salt. We're all full of it here.

I think I'm going to attend the 2nd look dates for both and base it off of that. otherwise, if i'm more interested in specializing and perhaps less so in primary care, would that affect the decision?

I think you are likely to get a better clinical experience at Wayne. Also, research is surprisingly easy to find.
