Hello, can any current students tell me which books and materials are required for first year? Thank you.

Officially required: Lots of books according to the course directors.

Actually required: Anatomy dissecting kit (available for sale during orientation), Grant's dissector, a dirty Netter (again available during orientation, and usually only 1-2 needed per anatomy group), and most people like a clean Netter/Thieme/Gray's/whatever. You don't need anything else really. The course packs are textbook length and contain everything you need for exams. If there is any other "required" book that you need to use for reference, there are several copies on reserve at the library. Save your $$ and don't buy them.

The only other thing that may be helpful would be a board review book for questions to help you prepare for the exam. A lot of people buy BRS anatomy (pretty good book), some people like to buy some sort of embryology reference, and when the time comes, nearly everybody buys a copy of BRS physiology - it is a great book for physio.

You probably also want to hold off buying things from Amazon right now... usually at the beginning of the year, a lot of upperclassmen will sell their used books at pretty substantial discounts.

I got through all of first year with a Grant's, Netter, BRS Anatomy and BRS Physiology and nothing else. I never felt like I needed anything more. Second and third year require a little more though... Coico immuno, Micro MRS, Robbins Review, Rapid Review Path, Pathoma, First Aid for Step 1, and then rotation specific books for third year are all pretty necessary.

Also for physical diagnosis really all you need is a stethoscope. I don't think they're requiring an oto/opthalmoscope, reflex hammer, etc. anymore.

So just curious...for those who were accepted last minute (i.e. right up to orientation), how do you handle housing, travel, etc. , especially if you are an OOS student? I would greatly appreciate anyone's input.

I found a roommate and my husband is staying with his job and the house until it sells. All our stuff and our pets are being distributed amongst friends and family. Praying the house sells fast.

Has anyone else been having trouble accessing the Housing application? I keep getting an error saying that my access ID isn't in the system even though it's been approx a week since I got my access ID.

I spoke to the office of housing & residential life a while ago and was told that med students have to make special arrangements to live at WSU campus housing as their typical designated move in day is August 24th. I don't know if that has anything to do with the access ID issue-I ended up finding housing elsewhere. I would call their office, they were very helpful when I spoke to them.

Thanks! I did end up calling them, and they helped me put in the info manually. 🙂

Is it too late to get housing? I'm not sure about those waitlist-ers who get in last minute. How difficult would it be for them to find housing anywhere at this point (campus or otherwise)?

Unfortunately, I don't know how late we can get housing. I applied anyways and hopefully it'll work out! >.<

I don't know about campus housing. I believe finding other housing will be difficult, but doable, especially if you're flexible with what you're looking for. I believe most of the student-oriented private housing in Midtown will be unavailable for those who have yet to get off the waitlist (I got on the StudioOne waitlist in February and wasn't called off of it until the first week of June). With that said, there are a fair number of people leasing their condos/apartments in Midtown that it isn't impossible, it will just take some looking.

I don't know anything about campus housing or how that works (the vast, vast majority of people who come to Wayne don't live on campus, and usually those who do are Wayne undergrads or lack a car, or something). Off campus housing in the Midtown area is kind of hard to find in general, honestly. Occupancy is somewhere around 98%, rents are rising, it's becoming a much more desirable place to live (having lived in Midtown for the last 2 years after living in Royal Oak before that, I can see why... I love it here), so you might have difficulty finding something right around the school right away.

If you go further afield to the suburbs - i.e. Royal Oak, Ferndale, etc. it will be no problem at all to find anything. There are nearly always places available in those areas, about a 15 minute (without traffic) drive from school. Quality varies from extremely expensive luxury lofts to cheap, kind of run-down apartments. There is more housing stock and variety in the suburbs than in Midtown proper. Generally, about 1/3-1/2 of the class ends up living in the suburbs.

Just got accepted off the wait list this morning.

IS 3.2 undergrad 3.7 grad 34 MCAT

Got pulled off the waitlist yesterday. Cannot believe it...I was seriously going to submit my AMCAS today. OOS 30/3.8

Now I got to scramble to move across the country in 3 weeks! Since I'm OOS, I'm concerned about finding housing last minute and whether or not I need to bring my car. From what it seems, it looks like the only housing available would be off-campus and little further from the campus, so I probably do need to bring my car. Also, what's the best way to go about finding housing? Our c/o 2018 FB page??

There's a housing spreadsheet on the Wayne state accepted students page to find a roommate.

For those of you IS, I am now matriculated into MSUCOM, but we did just have one of our IS classmates drop out last week because he got accepted at Wayne... so keep the hopes up! For me, I am about to take my first anatomy exam next week.. yikes! Good luck to everyone and I hope you get accepted somewhere! Just keep in mind that all you need is one school to believe in you and the rest is up to you on how you spend your years in medical school! I wasn't planning on going DO if I had an MD option, but I plan to work my ass off these next 4 years and make the most of my experience! 🙂

I very rarely post- but I think I speak for myself and those many others who follow this thread when I say that you are by far one of the most constructive and inspirational posters on this forum. I wish you the best of luck whether you are at Wayne or MSUCOM and in becoming a great physician.

Thank you so much! This means a lot!! I know how tough the road can be. I hope your journey is treating you well future doc 🙂

Just got accepted off the wait list!!! Anyone know if there's a housing spreadsheet to help find a roommate this last minute?

Do the majority of students live around campus in the Midtown area or in Royal Oak?

About 40% live in Midtown or Downtown, the rest are scattered throughout the 'burbs all the way over to AA. I live in Ferndale and really like the area

Does anyone have any advice in figuring out a place to live, kind of this late on?

Were you able to figure out housing options?
I got pulled off the wait list recently, and am trying to not bring my car as well, as I'm out of state.
Do you know if there is any available housing close to campus?

I was accepted a week ago but turned it down. I didn't realize they accept people all the way up until classes start. IS 3.9 GPA/28 Mcat

Just curious if anyone got in this week?
No, but finally got a snail mail letter yesterday saying as an alternate, they would welcome me to reapply next cycle.
As I'm going to school in Ann Arbor starting next week, won't take them up on the offer.
Good luck to any reapplicants, sounds like Wayne encourages folks to reapply that were on the alternate list.

I got a similar letter, though they said they couldn't consider me any more for entering class of 2014. Pretty bummed--I know my chances are pretty much 0 this late anyway, but getting kicked off the alternate list is weirdly saddening.

I just got accepted off the alternate list today, but am now in the predicament of deciding between MSUCOM and Wayne. The pros and the cons seem to be equal for both. At Wayne I worry that there isn't as big of a community within the student body, but there is more opportunity for networking within their hospital networks (since I already have contacts in their networks). I also identify more with the DO philosophy, but still have reservations about the match process and residency merger (also having to take both COMLEX and USMLE) and my ability to specialize as a DO.

Thoughts, SDN friends? I'm super excited about my acceptance to Wayne and this is the best possible problem to have (I never thought I'd have a choice as to where I go to medical school!!), but wow is this stressful!

Also for those interested, my stats were MCAT 27, sGPA 3.54, overall GPA 3.74

Just wanted to let you know that this is last years thread. You'll probably get more responses if you post in the thread for this cycle.
