2014-2015 Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
if any med students around the site can clarify what surroundings are like at Einstein? I've heard scary things about the Bronx lol :droid:

all the application status says for me is: application 2014-2015 application; date submitted Wednesday July 23, 2014 and the time. is that what everyone's says? or do some people have in review or something?

Hahaha the Bronx gets such a bad rap. I mean, sure there are some shady areas of the Bronx - but there are also some super sketch neighborhoods in manhattan as well! It's anywhere ya go.

Einstein is in a decent area. A few blocks away from einstein is a "mini Italy" type of place with lots of stores and restaurants etc.
Admittedly, einstein isn't in the most "beautiful" of places, but overall, it's not such a bad place. Students seem to like it, and overall feel very safe.

The interview day consists of the interview (usually around an hour) and the lunch+tour (which usually is around 1.5-2 hours).

You can either be scheduled for a morning interview (before lunch+tour) or an afternoon interview (after lunch+tour)

If given the choice (not sure if they do though) - choose the morning interview!! It's always great to get it over with before the lunch and tour, so you'll be much more relaxed and also don't have to rush to interview after.

Good luck everyone, and maybe see you on a tour! (I occasionally lead some of the tours as part of the student tour guide group)

Same here. I'm hoping that it doesn't mean we're out of the running already. Do they send out real rejections or silent rejections?
Most likely silent reply and formal rejection by next April

Does anyone know where/how this type of letter should be uploaded for the Einstein secondary (see below)? any non-traditional students out there who needed to request a letter from undergrad? thank you!!

"Recommendation Information"
"I understand that I must request a letter from the Dean of Students or Registrar at my undergraduate college stating that I was a student in good standing ONLY if my post-bac program advisor does not mention it in his or her letter of recommendation."

I'd e-mail them asking about the best way to submit it.

Hey guys, is the "EINSTEIN - APPLICATION ACKNOWLEDGEMENT" email the same thing as the secondary invite? THanks!

Hello everyone,

I'm a current M1 at Einstein and I'd be willing to answer any questions you all may have. Couple of things that made Einstein stand out against the other schools I was considering:
1. Cheap Housing ($500/month for a pretty decently sized apartment room)
2. On-campus housing guaranteed for all four years
3. Einstein Service & Research Merit based scholarship (a lot of students here have this; dare I say close to 40% ranging anywhere from $5-$40k I think)
4. Strict P/F pre-clinical; no internal ranking
5. Proximity to Manhattan
6. Match list contains many matches into Manhattan hospitals

Good luck all!

Thank you for the information! Is there any married housing? How does one receive the Einstein Service & Research Merit based scholarship?

Thanks!

Are those scholarships renewable?

I'm also an MS1 here.

Yes, there is marriage housing. Legally recognized couples (married or domestic partnerships) get preference for studios. The studios are 400-500 sqft w/ walk in closet, bathroom, full kitchen, big window. A studio currently runs 717/mo including internet, electricity, water, heating, and gas. I currently have one with my domestic partner (so you don't have to be married, but you do need to be in a legal relationship). In addition, you can get on a waiting list to get a one bedroom. Those run 1000/mo.

I don't know how to quote multiple posts in on reply but to answer HealthHare, the merit scholarship is $5k-20k per year and it is automatically renewed. Though I don't think anyone really knows how the school allocates it, but it does seem like a lot of people do get it. In addition, Einstein has other institutional aid, but you MUST SEND CSS BY MARCH REGARDLESS OF APPLICATION STATUS to get it. Check out their financial aid package.

Current ms1s, do you know how funding for global health electives work? Its something Ive always wanted to do but couldent in pharmacy school due to financial constraints. I was thrilled when I read on their site that they offer some sort of funding.

Yes married couples and those in domestic partnerships have second priority (after MSTP) for their own studio. If you have kids, then you have first priority for either a two bedroom or three bedroom depending on how many kids you have.

If you are a single student, you can put yourself on the wait list for a studio and you usually get that in 3rd year.

The scholarship is based on your csa research and volunteer activities. The admissions office uses that to gauge how much to give you. However I also think they look at stats as well.

anyone else here applying from canada? ~3.7gpa 37r mcat. got rejected without interview two years ago but i applied far too late then. completed 7/26 this time so i'm hoping for an interview.

Congrats to those with interview invites! I'll be excited to meet you all : )

Does anyone know why Einstein sends out acceptances starting Feb 1st, 2015? That's so much later than most schools. It seems they start interviews really early so I would assume their class would fill up fast?

In the past, they sent out acceptances January 15th, I wonder if they changed it this year...

While this might be later than some other schools, it's a fair way for the school to evaluate many students before issuing acceptances. This gives students who interview slightly later an equal shot as well.
Thus, it's kind of a "semi-rolling" acceptance method.

That's great to hear. On MSAR it says Feb 1st so I guess they did change it.

Interesting - so either they changed it or it's a mistake on MSAR (I'm not sure what MSAR said in previous years)

But yea - the waiting does suck - but at least since people know there's that set deadline, they don't have to anxiously check email every day after interview, and can just quasi relax until that specified date (half glass full type of approach haha)

Anyways, good luck to everyone!

MSAR said Jan 15 last year so I do think they changed it. Either way, I'm pumped to visit the Bronx!

Come and visit the Bronx - it gets a bad rap but it's not too shabby at all! 😀
Maybe I'll see some of you on your tours!

Finally got the completed email. Secondary submitted 7/26. Would love to be one of the happy med student there.

It's not shabby indeed. There is the real "little Italy" for good food.

Finally complete email as well 😀 submitted 7/27

Hi everyone!

I'm so excited to have received an II from AECOM. I'm interviewing in early September, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with the student hosting program. Is there anything we'd need to bring (i.e. blankets, pillows, etc.)? Or does that vary from student host to student host? Would we just be crashing on a couch?

I'm currently debating between reserving a hotel or using the student host program. I'm leaning towards the student host program, but just wanted to get some more information about it before I make the decision 🙂 Thanks in advance!

I'm wondering about this too, for all of my interviews. The biggest issue is that I'm a very light sleeper and I NEED sleep the night before my interview. A hotel seems like it would be much more relaxed, but I'd lose out on the opportunity to ask about the school, interview day, etc...

Oh and $$.

If you're a light sleeper and sleep is super critical for you before an interview, you might be better off with a hotel. Downside to a hotel is that you have to wake up earlier to check out and commute to einstein.

I'm not 100% familiar with the student hosting (since I was never able to be a host because I'm married). I believe the accommodations vary from person to person - but I can try to find out more exact details.

As for "missing out" about being able to ask about stuff - you can ask on this forum about things and either myself or other current students can answer you! Also, you'll have plenty of time during the tour and lunch to ask current students any and all questions you have! No worries 🙂

Did anyone mistakenly submit the secondary without uploading a photo? Ugh.

Hand in the air! It seemed to me that my secondary was not completed until I did. I was glad that I discovered the photo being missing, but I was a little sad about a much later completion date.

That's strange, I could submit no problem without it.
