2014-2015 Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you're a NY resident, then Downstate gets even cheaper, no? I believe you can be a resident after a year in NY if what I've heard from friends at downstate is accurate. That would make things even less expensive from the 2nd year on.

I'm actually looking at the Downstate on campus housing and it looks like having your own bedroom in a shared apartment is actually ~$1000 a month.... 🙁

That's NYC for ya!

Park slope can be had for similar amounts if you find an apartment in the right area.

1200ish is pretty normal for a reasonable room in a shared apartment in the city though.

Precisely the reason Downstate is such a viable option for me - you can't beat that cost! Also, I'm planning to live on campus no matter where I go (I've seen Downstate's housing, it's not too bad for me personally). It's really coming down as to whether Einstein's name is worth the cost. I also understand that King's County has more diverse clinical experience, whereas Einstein's research opportunities are ideal for competitive specialties.

Decisions, decisions.
In the same boat as NYS resident. Haven't heard anything from Einstein yet so not really in a that position, but it will take quite some thinking.

Yeah, I thought the on-campus was a little cheaper for some reason. Might as well go off-campus for that price.

I've been looking into this too (NY-er) and Park slope is definitely the better deal even if it's a bit more pricey. The Downstate dorms don't even have AC...

In the same boat as you guys btw, still have yet to hear from Einstein but oh man, the decision would be tough.

My top two schools (where I've interviewed) are Einstein and UMass. If I get into both, I'm going to have a heckuva time making that decision!

Am I crazy or did last year's post interview rejections go out really really late, like april. So if we interviewed early and haven't received an acceptance or waitlist does that mean a rejection? Anybody have an idea about rejection notifications?

FYI don't forget at Einstein utility and wifi are free, which could be around an extra $100 a month elsewhere.

FYI I pay $358/month for a shared studio at Einstein, utilities and internet included. Those in a 3 bedroom share pay like $430/month and those in 2 bedroom share pay like $505/month.
Shared studio? Is this with a partner?
I was told only people with partners are allowed to have a studio, and everyone else had to share.

Did they already assign HPL?

No idea. But I'm guessing they might be sending out HPL in coming weeks. Seems as though Einstein is sending out decisions bit late than last year, and i don't think anyone posted of getting HPL decision yet, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

haha thank you. I wasn't sure if I was the only one who felt his responses were a bit less than one would expect from a future medical professional, but it's good to know there are others who agree.

I try to chalk up petty and/or condescending remarks on SDN to being results of people's own anxieties & insecurities combined with the feeling that anonymity online lacks consequences. For example, one could say I am more likely to post this because it won't effect my future working relationships with y'all

Are finances a big factor for you guys when choosing schools? I just figured I would take out loans and would ideally be making enough money someday to offset them.

Unfortunately, finances is pretty much my only factor when choosing between schools 🙁. Money is something that really stresses me out and I just want to become a doctor. I only applied to good schools that I would love to attend so basically whoever is cheapest is where I will go. And for the most part, every school I visited seems pretty much the same... learn some stuff, take a test, hang out in a hospital... MD lol (that was a joke)

I just don't want to be this guy:

(debt-->):diebanana:(<-- Me)

Just withdrew. Hopefully my spot goes to one of you. Good luck 🙂

And more chances for research and a better home residency program would sway me in the other direction.

An extra ~$100,000 in loans will effect your life for a long, long time and lets be honest... not even public service loan forgiveness will exist for us.
If you're worried about research both UMass and Einstein are Top 40 NIH Funded schools (both in the bottom 20). That's the measure used by the AAMC used to differentiate between research heavy and other institutions. Also, every doc I work with says not to bother comparing state school match lists with private schools. They have different goals so as a whole they will be visibly different. You're an individual, not a class, so your school won't change your aptitude. If schools similar resources, you'll end up in a similar place just with a mountain of debt that varies in altitude.

More info about Montefiore which points to why Monte taking over Einstein is an excellent move for AECOM:
Montefiore Medical Center has 1,491 acute-care beds and treats the Bronx community, which has more than 1.4 million people.
Overall, the medical center has 17,600 employees, and there are 1,760 employed physicians on Montefiore's medical staff.
In 2012 across all of Montefiore's divisions, the medical center posted total revenue of $7.1 billion. Net income topped $134 million for a profit margin of 1.9 percent, there were 90,000 total admissions, 303,000 emergency department visits and more than 2.7 million other ambulatory visits.
FYI:
The 10 Top Grossing Non-Profit Hospitals in America in 2014
  1. UPMC Presbyterian (Pittsburgh)— $12.21 billion
  2. The Cleveland Clinic — $11.63 billion
  3. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles) — $10.59 billion
  4. Florida Hospital Orlando— $10.17 billion
  5. Stanford (Calif.) Hospital — $9.41 billion
  6. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (New York City)— $8.91 billion
  7. Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital— $8.15 billion
  8. Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) — $7.97 billion
  9. Motefiore Hospital-Moses Campus (Bronx, N.Y.)— $7.68 billion
  10. University of California San Francisco Medical Center at Parnassus— $7.67 billion
May I ask where you found these data? I'd like to see more hospitals if possible. Thanks a lot!

Doesn't change the home residency bit, but yeah, your point is why it would be a hard decision to make. I'm getting ahead of myself though. Long wait ahead.

What is einstein's method of accept/waitlist/ reject? I haven't heard anything and interviewed 9/15. Thank you!

same boat .. interviewed sept 15

Took my SO through campus yesterday, it was pretty chilly but nice to walk around it again. Remembered an extra perk of einstein: only about a 30 minute trip to Arthur Avenue!

Rejected, interviewed in Sept. I was genuinely surprised because my interview here was my best interview of the entire cycle. In addition to a great interview, my interviewer told me he was going to enthusiastically recommend me and hoped I would attend. Just goes to show that the interview isn't everything.

my experiences have shown me that the interview is a very small part of decisions at some places, and it sucks. I'm sorry to hear this and I hope you succeed elsewhere.

Also rejected, but not too surprised or hurt about it. My interviewer and I disagreed on a couple things and she seemed pretty skeptical about my application. She was also 10 min late to my interview because she wanted to talk to the admissions office about her latest botox job (which I heard from the waiting area), and answered her phone in the middle of the interview to talk to her son for 5 minutes. Awesome school anyway! Congrats to those accepted.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Thankfully I have some great options, but Einstein is close to my SO and my parents so I was going to see what financial aid they offered if I was accepted.

Also rejected. Not too upset since I probably wouldn't have attended anyway.

Also rejected. Stats, complete date, interview day are in an earlier post.

You guys are all making me nervous. my interviewer was also late and cut our interview pretty short. not feeling so hopeful here all of a sudden

In the secondary they asked you to provide "confirmation of your plans when complete," when referring to the time I took off after graduation from undergrad. Who did you guys email for this?

My interviewer was about 45 minutes late, but our interview ended up going 1.5 hours. It appears he might be a little late in presenting me to the committee too!

Don't worry! My interviewer was late as well, and our interview was actually interrupted by a call from staff during which he said "I'm busy...but if it's an emergency then I can make time" haha. He was an awesome guy, though.

Just withdrew my interview mid march. Good luck to the next person who gets it!

Rejected, post interview
Interviewed mid-November, thought it went great. Ah well.

Oh crap. This is frightening!

I hope you wrote to admissions about this? You could have done it with someone else, no?

🙁

I gave negative feedback on the interview questionnaire they sent out a couple days after interviewing, but wasn't inspired enough to personally express my displeasure to the admissions office. It's okay, though! I wouldn't have attended had I gotten in--cheaper options closer to home 🙂

My interview recently was ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It wasn't horrible (to merit a second interview request) but it wasn't great either (at least IMO) but what does that even matter if people with great interviews are not getting accepted. Really don't know what to expect :/
