2014-2015 Baylor College of Medicine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How many spots in the class do you guys think are left at this point?

spots for acceptance? a majority. I believe they really start filling spots in February and March with some coming of waitlist up until May.

But for interview spots, it looks like there is really only one day left at the end of February. According to last years thread next week is the last confirmation of an interview invite.

Are they accepting people much slower this year or are people just not posting that they've been accepted? There has been almost no one posting that they've been accepted since November except for one person in late December.

Don't think we can figure that one out.

Hang in there folks! :luck: 🙂

As I have noted here before, you can still interview as late as the end of February and be accepted, even with a scholarship, past May 1 (especially true for OOS applicants who are "prescribed" at 25% of each class). That residency matching computer in 3 years will NEVER know WHEN you got accepted...nor will anyone later evaluating you at BCM!

The process is indeed PAINFULLY protracted, but BCM ESPECIALLY can be worth the wait! It IS the best true net value medical school in America, not just the "best private medical school value in America" (as BCM's web site justifiably notes).

Our daughter will have saved AT LEAST $77k in tuition alone over the cost of our lone IS public medical school. And BCM has typically had the highest average Step 1 scores in America among ~ 150 (allopathic) medical schools. This, in turn, leads to a dazzling residency match list every year.

Some of the schools will offer generous scholarships, BUT their face costs are so great that the net costs are STILL burdensome. Even OOS, BCM STARTS OUT as a value.

Esprit de corps is excellent-- fellow students will offer help and advice. Having evolved to P/F during the 18 month preclinical period (classroom portion) seems to have ended the gunner syndrome...and getting into clinicals/rotations after Christmas in year 2 is a sure winner.

By all means, if you have interviewed (or perhaps even if wanting to interview during this cycle), send along any true application update info-- New grades? Accolades? What stood out to you when you interviewed?

Houston has a milder climate than most upper tier schools and offers everything but snow skiing in your spare time.
Carpe diem!

So when is the last wave of interview invites going out? If thats a question that can be answered

based on the last one from last year's thread ... about next week. Definitely done within two weeks, since February is the last month of interviews.

Just got an interview!!! Wow I thought my interview season was over and that I was going to UTHSCSA (from San Antonio), but this is unbelievable! I know it's still a long shot that I get accepted, but I'm still at a loss for words!

Don't give up hope guys!
Congrats! Stats?

I hope this will provide some inspiration to all those still waiting - I was complete July 21st, stuck with the "has been reviewed" status ever since then. I sent an update in PDF form to their main admissions email about 10 days ago, my status changed to "is currently being reviewed". Today I woke up to an interview invite! I know it's super late in the game and I had pretty much settled with my current school list, but Baylor has always been one of my top choices and I'm beyond the moon excited!! So DON'T LOSE HOPE and send those updates!

Also, my update included a new (medically related) job and stats on a prereq class. Don't feel like you have to have published to be worthy of an update.
Congrats! Stats?

Hey everyone, new SDN member here. I have my interview coming up here at Baylor. Any tips on how the interview goes? Kind of questions they ask? Thanks!

My status recently changed to "is being reviewed" from the previous "has been reviewed." Can anyone verify if this remains a surefire indication of an impending interview invite? As I skimmed through most of the posts, it always seemed to be a faithful indicator, but I didn't know if anything had changed at this late point in the game.
Thanks!

I know someone who received an interview invite just last week after a change in status during the weekend prior!

Just got an II! Does anyone know when the interview day ends? Looking at flights (I'm OOS)...

Congratulations! You should be done by 5 PM I believe, but Houston traffic can get pretty bad around this time. The tours are optional (I think) and the last thing we did, so you can leave a bit early if absolutely needed. A couple students did this when I interviewed. Good luck!

Stats/Complete? What time were these interviews released?

Congrats!! Hopefully they are still sending out more interviews. Were you guys complete relatively early?

Congrats guys and girls. Are these interviews for the end of feb? (2/27) and had you guys been sitting on "your application is being reviewed" status for a while or just recently?

Seems like next Tuesday is going to be last chance for invites. I have been on this status change to "is being reviewed" for over a month now, and if it had not changed, i do not think I would have risen my hopes.

interview is end of feb. never had the "is being reviewed" status..that i know if. last time i checked (last week) it was the decision has been made status.

TRUST ME...you can interview late in February (4 more full weeks) and STILL be accepted and get a scholarship. :luck:

Not sure when the last (feasible) interview offer date/deadline might be....

Keep the faith, and good luck! 🙂

^^^^agreed!! Definitely keep the faith if you have an II. BCM is slow & deliberate for a reason. They are trying to put together the best possible class for you. The majority of acceptances go out in March/April. The word on the street here is that relatively few acceptances have actually gone out. Let me know if you're coming to interview and want a personal tour or a coffee conversation with a current student

Best of luck!!

I also strongly advise coming and sitting in on morning lectures on your interview day!! Message me if you need help doing this!!

Did you send in an update or anything to the BCM office of admissions around the time that your status changed? I sent an update about 2-3 weeks before I noticed my status changed... I wonder if it automatically changes when they pull your file to add the update, giving us sort of a false-positive with the "is being reviewed" thing.

I would love it if someone could debunk that theory though lol

I believe I sent an update about a month before my status changed. (It was just notifying them of research related news).

I like your theory. So is there anyone who sent an update and did NOT get a status change?

I didn't get a status change when I sent an update in the fall.

I completed in early to mid August.

MCAT 34, cGPA 3.82

Pretty good extracurriculars, including a significant amount of relevant international experience.

Fingers are still crossed. Working on a letter of intent soon. Best of luck everyone!

Did you get an interview yet? I completed around the same time, with lower stats, but haven't heard anything..Baylor is my second choice :/

FYI: BCM's earlier published data for applicants (recent prior class, e.g.):

For in-state applicants:
1494 applied
452 interviewed
218 accepted
138 matriculated
(48% of in-state applicants who interviewed were accepted)

For out of state (OOS) applicants:
4027 applied
279 interviewed
119 were accepted
47 matriculated

Percentage of OOS accepted from those who interview (119/279): 43%

Percentage of OOS accepted who actually enroll (47/119): 40%
Percentage of OOS who interview who actually enroll (47/279): 17%
Percentage of OOS who apply who actually enroll: (47/4,027): 1.16%

Intuitively, those OOS who are accepted likely also have other acceptance options including their IS public schools, so 40% actually choose to enroll @ BCM. OOS matriculants are "prescribed" to be 25% of each BCM class.

I will reiterate that it is a FACT that the majority of BCM acceptances go out in March & April. With wait list movement through May.

Sorry, I don't want it to seem like I'm questioning or didn't read your post. I was just wondering if acceptances go out in February too.

During my interview Jan 16 they said the earliest we could hear was 2 weeks from that date. So yes, I think some acceptances will go out in February.

I understand haha. I just want you to keep the faith BCM is purposefully slow and deliberate.

Have any accepted students received a background check request yet?

Does anyone know when scholarships for BCM come out?
I believe they normally come around this time of the year. As people choose to accept/decline those offers, the scholarships are forwarded to other desirable applicants until they run out. That process extends to around May, though I remember a big wave of them coming March-April among my group of friends. I've heard values ranging from a few thousand up to full tuition. This is mainly from word of mouth so take what I say with a grain of salt.

That said, keep in mind that the tuition+fees at Baylor is already on par with receiving a ~half tuition scholarship at most non-Texas schools. Baylor is very discounted to begin with.

~~~~~~~
One experience-- the OOS offer came from the WL in early May. The scholarship offer was expressed for each year in absolute dollars, but for years 2-4 it clearly assumed that residency would have been established. In other words, each year was 1/2 of the tuition-- 50% of OOS tuition for MS1, then 50% of IS tuition for years 2-4.
As someone noted just earlier, a key point is that the FACE amount of tuition, even OOS, is pretty darn great. Getting some degree of scholarship makes it even sweeter, especially at the school with the top average Step 1 score among our 150+ allopathic medical schools!
🙂
Any news from others that have been sitting on a status change for a while now? Anyone make any calls or have any reason to remain hopeful for an incoming II?
@IQ2US perhaps you've received something?
This past week my status changed back to has been reviewed... so idk. I think I'm going to get passed over.
they have been sending out II on tuesday, I would think tomorrow is the last day for invites to be sent out. Last interview date is 2/27. Good luck
My status changed back to the 'has been reviewed' language.
I am fortunate to have wonderful options and I will be in med school this year, but that doesn't provide much comfort.
Out of all my rejections, this one hurts the most.
Best to all of you that got interviews and acceptances. I'll see you on the interview trail for residency. 👍
Anybody else interview really early in the year (September-October) and still waiting to hear back? Starting to get really discouraged over here 🙁
Right there with you. Chin up: BCM is notoriously slow with this process.
Yup. Same interview day as you.
Don't lose hope!
