2014-2015 Baylor College of Medicine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The Future of Medicine lecture was surprisingly pessimistic lol
For those who didn't go, the main message I got was "Don't expect to get paid, and you won't be disappointed."

That's noble, I guess. I know physician compensation has a lot of debate threads here on SDN, and I'm not nearly interested enough right now to get into it. But it made me a little uncomfortable, like we were being accused of not being fully committed if anyone was too concerned about declining compensation. I have a hard time believing physician pay is the main driving force of healthcare costs (and thus the best thing to "reform" downwards), but who knows.

Anyway, definitely a good food-for-thought lecture. Hope everyone enjoyed Second Look. I wish there had been more student groups repping their clubs, and fewer realtors shoving business cards at me.

From this so far it sounds like second look was terrible lol
Yeah, that "Future" talk was fine, I was exaggerating a bit, too. It was a pragmatic look at the future of healthcare as a business. No worries . The rest of the day was a lot of "look at the impressive stuff Baylor does" like open fetal surgeries, baby heart transplants, all sorts of other research opportunities, chatting with happy Baylor students, and free food. It was fun. I'm glad I went.

How was second look?

I thought it was pretty informative & fun. There was a short reception on Friday night with a good number of BCM students, and on Saturday were the "actual" second look events. There was a breakfast, then talks, then a few different tours, a "fair" with a small number of student organizations and realtors for housing, then lunch, and a student panel. I wish more student groups showed up too. Aside from the surgeon one, there were only a few talks that weren't really all that. I noticed this at the interview day too. (The deans mentioned at some point that they count on their students more than most schools to promote BCM, so I guess that's why there a few talks). I ended up just asking a lot of students for any information I wanted to know. They were very helpful and seemed to really like the school.

I chose that lecture too, but I didn't get that message at all, it was more like "Don't expect to live outside your means and still be happy when wages decrease in the future." This was said about the average salary of radiologists decreasing from ~520k to ~390k after recent healthcare reform, which doctors complained about.

I was a little surprised by that lecture being given at a second look event, since it is a little off-putting. But I personally appreciated the realistic outlook the speaker presented.

Not at all, it was great 🙂

It was just kinda a short second look in my opinion.

Yeah I heard about that...was really glad I didn't go to that lecture.

Overall I thought second look was great. I think the best part about it was how many opportunities we had to talk to current students, and to interact with future classmates. The simulation lab was awesome, and I got to go to TCH to see one of the floors and see a patient. That was pretty awesome but I may be biased as I'm super set on Baylor. I do have to say though, the class they've put together for us is pretty great. Everyone that I sat down and talked with I could legitimately see myself being friends with. That was a great part about this weekend.

Just got a call from Baylor and I missed it. Do they call if you are waitlisted also? There is no change in my status and getting accepted sounds too good to be true...
I'm pretty sure they call you for acceptance regardless of if you were waitlisted or not. I don't think the change in status is a solid indicator....let us know when they call you back!!

Update: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats! Im assuming you have to make the decision by april 30th?
I don't know. Please tell me! I barely remember the conversation, all I know is that I'll supposedly get an email in the next couple days with the official acceptance.

Just a quick update, my status changed today to "not supported" on the application portal after receiving the acceptance call yesterday. Have not yet received the official email.

Edit: Received the official email about 20 minutes after posting this.

A number of acceptances (mainly IS?) acknowledged in recent days...we kept trying to tell those waiting with bated breath to keep the faith! :luck: 🙂

There should be more IS wait list acceptances thru April, then the OOS wait list will also move in early May. Just sayin' after lurking here now and then since the 2012 year....

On interview day, I think I was told that Baylor admissions is in a rolling process format, and that they would keep on looking at the applicants till the class is filled. Does that mean there isn't a waiting list?

What about IS acceptances in May? As I understand it, IS applicants have until June 1 (May 31?) to hear from/commit to one school in Texas. Please correct me if I'm mistaken! 🙂

Also accepted on Wednesday! What an awesome feeling, but I will withdraw my acceptance as I have committed to Keck! Good luck to everyone still in the running and I hope someone gets my spot 🙂
Since you've committed to a school, please make sure to immediately withdraw your application from any other school where you are still in the running.

~~~~~~~~~
Sorry...did not mean to confuse, and my recollection is dated. We (OOS) had understood that there was some sort of trigger around May1 that prompted more OOS WL movement after that date. What I wrote just above was inartfully written...and I seem not to be making it better here either!
😕😳
So far it seems that mostly people who interviewed before December have gotten in. Any hope for those who interviewed post December?
(looking back on one family's BCM experience)
I can ASSURE YOU that even a February interview (she had been complete late) from OOS can get accepted and get a 50% merit scholarship in early May at BCM...it happened for us. Again, understand that ~60% of those that BCM accepts from OOS (who will make up 25% of each class by design/intent) opt finally to go elsewhere by the drop dead date for all final acceptances of those holding places at medical schools. There is a musical chairs kind of thing when that date arrives.
This is true, more or less, of ALL medical schools. Some medical schools accept applicants months before they make them scholarship/grant offers...some then opt finally to go to their public schools IS if those offers are attractive.
But BCM is SUCH A GREAT VALUE that even a 50% tuition break at our lone state/public medical school (a middle tier school) would have cost us more. BCM saved us $77k in tuition alone over our IS public school without a scholarship/grant (we did not wait around to see if that might have been forthcoming after BCM called). And while BCM tacks on ~$10k/year in fees, SO DO other medical schools...read the fine print! 🙂 :luck:
prior/recent year BCM application/acceptance/matriculation data, e.g.---->
for OOS applicants:
4027 applied
279 interviewed
119 were accepted
47 matriculated
(39% accepted actually matriculated...ergo, just 1.2% of all who applied from OOS actually matriculated)
for IS applicants:
1494 applied
452 interviewed
218 accepted
138 matriculated
(48% of IS applicants who interviewed were accepted; 63% of IS accepted actually matriculated)
