In the event that you are accepted to two or more medicals schools, what factors would be most important in determining which school would be the "best fit" for you. (1200 characters limit)

Select an experience unrelated to science or medicine that you’ve had in each of the categories below. Just name the experience and then write a very brief statement about why you did the experience and/or what was the most important thing(s) you learned about yourself from doing it. You may write about a new experience or one listed in your AMCAS application. An experience may be used more than once. Leaving categories blank will not make your application incomplete. Limit your answers to the spaces provided.

1. A community service experience (unrelated to science or patient care). (1200 characters limit)

2. An employment experience (a job you held for pay unrelated to science or medicine). (1200 characters limit)

3. A position of responsibility/authority (in which others depended on you for direction). (1200 characters limit)

4. A creative endeavor (anything that required you to be creative in your approach, e.g. art, dance, music, computer programming, web site design, writing). (1200 characters limit)

5. A situation in which you interacted with individuals who were different from you. (1200 characters limit)

6. Sports, travel, pets, hobbies: Choose one of the following and write about it as you did in 1-5 above: a) a sport in which you participate or follow); b) your most memorable travel experience; c) pet(s) for which you provided care; or d) an avocation (most important thing you do for distraction). (1200 characters limit)

Describe any compelling humanitarian reason you have to attend our College of Medicine. If none, leave blank. (1200 characters limit)

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

Space reserved for prompt.

Please PM the essays or lack thereof to me when the secondary is available and I will update this.

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:
I think I took the mcat on the same date as you last year.

Does anyone have UFs secondary questions?

Also recieved secondary, don't know if they are trying to scare people off but it came with a disclaimer :
We expect to enroll a class with numerical credentials similar to those of everyone admitted to medical school in the United States last year. That means we expect to enroll a class with a cumulative GPA around 3.7 and an MCAT composite average around 32. Please keep in mind, however, that these are just averages and that the range of scores varies significantly. Also, FAU conducts a Holistic admissions review process; applicants who possess highly desirable personal traits or compelling life experiences will be considered favorably by the admissions committee.

Lol I saw that, pretty intimidating honestly

They changed the last essay prompt and removed the word humanitarian:
Describe any compelling reason you have to attend our College of Medicine. If none, leave blank. (1200 characters limit)

So now I am really confused. Is question saying why are you interested in our medical school or is it saying list some sort of special case scenario/reason you want to attend the school?

So I am beyond confused on how to answer the last question on the secondary because this was exactly how the question was stated two years ago on FAU's secondary and the dean of admissions(at the time) posted this reply when people were confused and then they changed the question.....

The intent of that question was to identify applicants with a compelling "humanitarian need" to attend our medical school, not a place to simply restate your interest. We'll restate the question to make it more clear. The great majority of applicants have left the question blank.

My guess is that they accidentally posted the question without the change from "compelling reason" to "compelling humanitarian reason"

I just wrote why I was interested in their program due to the word change. I haven't submitted yet though, and now I'm a little paranoid about it haha

I already submitted and used the blank. I didn't read it as anything to do with humanitarian. I found this little tidbit from FAU admission page FAQ about last years class:

Total students: 64
Gender: Men 36 (56%) / Women 28 (44%)
GPA: 3.7 (range 3 - 4)
MCAT: 32.4 (median 33)
States Represented: FL, CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, NC, NJ, NY, OH, VA
Schools Represented: Amherst, Brandeis, Bucknell, Colgate, Duke, Florida Atlantic, Hamilton College, Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Lipscomb University, Northwestern, St. Thomas, Stanford, Tufts, Univ of Colorado, Univ of Michigan, Univ of Pittsburgh, UC-Berkeley, UC-Santa Barbara, UCLA, Univ of Florida, Univ of Miami, Univ of North Carolina, Univ of Illinois, Univ of Maryland, Univ of Pennsylvania, Univ of Virginia, Univ of South FL, Washington & Lee, Washington Univ in St. Louis

I feel as though I might have wasted money applying. I think our LizzyM spreadsheet was way off on this one. I should have dug more deeply, but I am instate so who knows.

Hello all ! I though I become part of this online community. Were are all in the same boat with our own personal differences. So I guess i concluded to leave the last question blank. I will continue to work on my essays and hopefully submit soon. Good luck everyone !

I would like to note that as a non traditional you need to get special permission to use non faculty LoR or professional letters, I spoke to admissions/The Dean and they were not gonna let me use my professional LoR's until they found out I was a nurse (I.e. they wanted letters with direct application to medicine and they were fine with mine for that reason, but stated that if I was an accountant my references wouldn't have been okay and I would have had to try and hunt down old faculty. Fyi for you other non trad out there.

So I just submitted my secondary, and some information popped up afterward including this:

"Scores from MCAT exams taken in calendar years 2011, 2012, and until September 2013, will be considered. MCATs taken before 2011 or after September 2013 unfortunately will not be considered."

Does anyone else think this is probably a typo? Why would they not accept MCAT scores after September 2013?

sounds like a typo to me. i would call the admissions office to double check

My application states preliminary review complete since 7/17. Hopefully this is a good thing.

Finally finished and turned this one in!

So I know the very first question says 1200 characters with spaces...but the other questions just say 1200 characters. Are you all considering that as with spaces? It seems that it is accepting it with 1200 characters w/o spaces.

I did 1200 with spaces to be safe

does anyone have a status beyond "secondary app completed" ? I've been complete since 7/9/14

Mine says preliminary review completed...

complete 7/9/14...status changed to "review in progress" today

"preliminary review completed" 7/21/14, IS, 32, 3.72, submitted 7/14/14

It looks like they have been completing preliminary reviews a lot earlier than last year, hopefully this is a good thing

Any thoughts about the life beyond science questions. necessary to complete?

Any thoughts on this school as an oos student with a 29 mcat?

I pre wrote all the questions but then decided i would be wasting my money by applying. Any advice?

II today!!!! Cannot wait to take a trip to boca. FAU also has a really interesting academic culture

+1! When did you schedule it for? I am the 26th of August

So they did change the compelling reason question? I have a pretty compelling humanitarian reason I want to go into medicine, but not a super compelling reason I want to go to FAU

They put "humanitarian" back on the secondary prompt after mine was submitted lol so I submitted a paragraph just about why I would like to attend the school talking about it's curriculum. Whoops!

Ahaha, did they really? I submitted mine earlier today and "humanitarian wasn't there.

status changed to "Preliminary Review Completed" on 8/3. anyone knows what this review actually entails? my letters aren't even in yet and I've got this status here and at FIU

I have had it for over 2 weeks now, I am not sure it means anything other than they looked at your app.

I don't remember seeing a "Review in Progress" status (probably because I check the site randomly). I submitted the secondary on 7/20 though

I believe I was in that status for about a week and a half. Wouldn't read into it tho.
