2014-2015 Florida International University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know what they ask on the secondary as far as criminal history ? Do they ask for just convictions , or for arrests and charges ? Thanks !

I think it says something to the effect of "Have you ever been convicted of a crime that led to a misdemeanor or felony?" They're basically screening for the charges that would disallow you from becoming board certified (i.e., statutory rape, etc.)

Okay, thank you! I am worried because I have a misdemeanor charge pending that I am pleading not guilty to and the charges will probably be dropped but I don't want to not get interviews because of a pending charge or question about arrests, unfortunately there is a stigma attached.

my situation is complicated because I have never been convicted of anything but I have a misdemeanor charge pending . I know AMCAS just asks about convictions but I have heard some secondary ask about pending charges and even simply arrests.

Your best bet is to be upfront and fully disclose everything. The question will typically ask you to check a "Yes" or "No" box. When you do that, a secondary text box will appear for you to explain the situation. Be concise, but very thorough in what happened/may happen. If you fail to tell them, you WILL be denied acceptance for not disclosing criminal history. This is not an "if", it is a guarantee.

Thank you so much for your response . I know it is horrible to lie and if the question asks "have you ever been charged , have you ever been arrested , or do you have a pending charge" I will 100% answer yes and explain . At the same time though , if the question asks "have you ever been convicted " the truthful answer is no , I have no convictions , and I don't know if it's a good idea to check yes and then explain it's pending because there is such a stigma attached and there is a good chance that I will not get convicted. So I'm in a tough spot . Any advice on this ? Do you remember if they asked about pendings?

Does anybody have the match day 2015 results?
I don't think there is an organized list published yet but I know from watching the match yesterday that FIU had: 1 plastic surgery, 4 ortho surgery, 1 urology, 2 ophthalmology, 1 ENT, 1 neurosurgery and multiple psych, FM, IM, Peds, Gen surgery, OB/GYN, Rads, Anesthesia.

By the time you get your secondary (July/August- if you submit AMCAS early), won't you know whether or not you're convicted?

I pulled up the app...This is what the secondary for HWCOM asks:
Have you ever been arrested whereby the arrest led to a plea of guilty, a plea to a lower charge, a plea of no contest or dismissal of the charge?

Im guessing this means you'd check the box "yes." Idk. I'd rather be denied an interview because I was honest in my apps, than have my conditional acceptance revoked after a background check because I failed to provide the school with details.

It seems like you're fishing for a magical resolution to your problem. What you're dealing with doesn't have a straight answer beyond being upfront with admissions, highlight how you've learned from the experience, and hope for the best. Talking to a committee member in the schools you're interested might give you better answers.
FWIW, I have a friend who got into a good school with a misdemeanor.
Good luck

We had a great match this year! I matched rads @ Vanderbilt and many of my friends matched to other great institutions (Harvard, Hopkins, Emory, Georgetown, the list goes on...). I don't know when the school plans on releasing the match results as a list, but I can check with the office of student affairs and let you guys know.

The fact that you had to wait until the end of third year to take Step I wasn't a deterrent/hindrance in terms of applying?

To be honest, that's one of my worries with regards to FIU. During our interview day, we actually ran into some second years who were wanting to do Step I at the end of second year, to avoid any issues (as one of the deans pointed out can happen when you delay Step I until third year).

First off, sorry the above is sideways. I'm posting this while tending to a toddler that is dead set on using our living room for parkour.

I, too, was worried about this when I started school at FIU, and I also planned on taking it at the end of 2nd year- studying during the last few courses and taking my spring break to buckle down and then take the exam during the orientation week for M3. However, then I got pregnant and had my son in the last course of 2nd year so...didn't pan out.

In the end, I think I panicked for nothing in the beginning. Taking it at the end of 3rd year didn't affect my score at all, and our overall average is well above the national average for step 1. We all freaked out about VSAS opening before we'd have scores, but honestly, most places didn't even look at applications until 30-60 days prior to your requested away rotation dates, and even with requesting an early away in August, I still had my step 1 score in time. Now, if you decide to take extra time and do step 1 after the beginning of May, then that could get you into a difficult situation with away rotation applications, but that would be your own timing issue, and to be perfectly honest, at the end of 5 weeks of hardcore studying I would have rather gouged my eyes out with a spoon than looked at another page of First Aid anyway. 😉

At American medical schools, technically anyone who is enrolled is allowed to take the exams. You could matriculate and take Step 1 the fall of M1 if you want. It would be a bad idea, but technically you're allowed to take them whenever and in whichever order you choose once entering med school.

Also, for some reason only the first page of the match list uploaded, oops. I'll fix it tomorrow. Too tired at the moment.

My husband is an MS-III (nearly MS-IV) and is about to take Step 2 (not an FIU student). He says that clinical rotations would have been AMAZINGLY helpful for Step 1 because they help solidify the content......... Dat FIU average score, tho--I think their performance speaks for itself.

Just wanting to clarify, April 30th is the deadline for which I can only hold one acceptance right?

Has anyone been asked to pay the deposit yet?
After the acceptance call/e-mail, I've heard nothing else about upcoming requirements or payment.

Well, the acceptance letter did say they wouldn't bother you about it until after April 30, so I guess they're sticking to their word in that regard? 🙂

I imagine at that point, if you're still holding your FIU seat, they'll start asking more stuff (e.g. if you claimed FL residency and haven't submitted your documents, to submit them asap... )

Would any current FIU students be willing to answer a few specific/personal FIU related questions from an accepted student? :prof:

I got my Bachelor's at FIU last April, I can answer any of your questions 🙂

lizampela, thanks for the response. I should have been more specific. They are med school related questions.

Does anyone know about financial aid/scholarships at FIU? How/when will accepted students be notified? If I haven't been notified does that mean anything?

Rejected via email. Looks like they are done with interviews.

"Good afternoon. Thank you for your interest in the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. The 2014-2015 admissions cycle is now closed. We regret to inform you that you were not selected for an interview. We appreciate your patience throughout this process and wish you continued success in your future endeavors."

I received an email from the FIU HWCOM Financial Aid Office with my estimated financial aid award letter for 2015-2016. I'm guessing other accepted students will also be receiving theirs soon too 🙂

Anybody know until when are they receiving diversity scholarship essays?

Interviewed 3/27 and received waitlist email today

Thank you guys so much!

@wh2k13 I interviewed on 3/2, and I was not wait-listed previously.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear back! Fingers crossed for good news. 🙂

What is there to worry about? Approx $300,000 to attend medical school, the US Military is happy to pay for that AND your living expenses.

According to their numbers it is closer to 400,000 dollars. About 95+ grand a year.
