2014-2015 Florida International University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It wasn't easy to make this decision, but I'm withdrawing my acceptance here and giving up a substantial scholarship. I hope it goes to somebody in the thread!

I absolutely loved FIU, but ultimately felt that a different school would be a better "fit" for me.

Good luck to everyone!

Kinda surprised they haven't asked for the deposit or sent out any more info about requirements, with less than 10 business days til the April 30th deadline for holding 1 seat !

i talked to admissions on friday and they said the welcome email is being sent out this week!
lol I talked to admissions last week and they had said they would be sending them out that same week.

Well, it's only Wednesday morning, but let's hope it comes out this week

8 gold chains like I'm SHAB SHABBA RANKS. Thanks bud!

One gold tooth like I'm Shab Shaba Ranks !

Now that A$AP FERG is out...I wonder what other members of the A$AP mob are considering FIU for their medical educations?

Except "8 gold chains" ISN'T Shabba Ranks....

FOUR gold chains is Shabba Ranks. 8 gold RINGS is Shabba Ranks. And two upstanding young ladies is Shabba Ranks.

So, I finally got an email from the Financial Aid office telling me they got my FAFSA.
In the email, they mentioned
In addition, if you have already been admitted to FIU, we encourage you to actively view your “TO DO LIST” on PantherSoft at http://my.fiu.edu for any requested documents.

Is anyone able to access the TO DO LIST?

when did you submit your fafsa if you don't mind me asking? I haven't gotten verification that it was received so I'm curious..

I submitted FAFSA sometime early March.

Do we even have accounts yet?

Soooo I'm awake at 3.30 am worrying about my future, when a question hits me. If someone is accepted off the waitlist into FIU before April 30th and they have another acceptance. Would that person have to decide before April 30th or are they given a leeway for 2 weeks?

I haven't looked it up myself by REL on UCF's thread said that any acceptance offered by April 30th you have the full two weeks to decide, then afterwards its atleast 5 days, thus making it possible to have a scenario in which you have to respond to the second offer before the first.

Are accepted students receiving a financial aid package together with the acceptance?

Yeah, some people received full scholarships along with their acceptance letters. Everyone else has to wait until April 30th for their financial aid awards to be posted to panthersoft.

Thanks!

No, I was accepted back in October, but they just called today 🙂

In the spirit of the April 30th deadline: how many of us are waitlisted?

Aye! :hello:

7 people on SDN alone that are waitlisted...and counting the inevitable population of waitlisted folks who aren't on SDN, this doesn't bode well for the size of the waitlist or our chances of coming off it :'(

Except that six people have already given up their seats.... on SDN. So, there are undoubtedly many more who have dropped in the real world 🙂

And we're also assuming that everyone who gets off the waitlist will attend so there's still some hope 🙂.

edit: i accidentally a word

We got this, guys!!! I can't wait to awkwardly call you guys by your SDN names at our White Coat Ceremony 😉

......No, but seriously: it happened to me. I went to Harvard's post-bacc program and for the first several months, I would get stopped and called by my SDN handle (my avatar used to be a picture of myself). Nothing stranger than walking to class and hearing a tentative, "...B..BeachBlondie?" HAHA!

To add a bit of perspective, there were several people at the final second look who held scholarship offers at other schools, and others who were deciding between a top tier school and FIU. I can't imagine giving up a substantial scholarship offer, no matter how excited you are about this school. I think there's a good chance I will end up seeing at least a few of you at FIU! Best of luck! Deposits are due by May 14, so I would imagine more waitlist action will come then.

I feel so strange about being absolutely stoked about people leaving. I mean, I obviously hope that they're making a choice that makes them happy... but it feels odd to be sitting in the corner, rocking and wringing my hands, muttering to myself, "Yes, yes.... drop the seat...."

Everyone in any waitlist watching people give up their seats right now.

fellow waitlister here. So I didn't end up sending financial aid forms yet, but I recently received a panther id. did this happen to anyone else?

I submitted my FAFSA, but recently noted that my Panther ID was added to my secondary application -- which is a new development.

Even if the FIU deposit is due May 14th, this shouldn't change the fact that applicants with multiple acceptances would have to pick one school by April 30th, right? So we could see waitlist movement at FIU well before the deposit due date?

Theoretically, yes. In last year's thread, you'll see that there's movement not long after the deadline. The movement, of course, is not so much dependent on that deadline, however; it depends on when the school feels that they have a solid understanding of what they need to fill.

Waitlisted as well... Crossing my fingers for some good news for all of us! :xf:

Edit: just checked my application status and I have a panther ID as well and I didn't do any financial paperwork. I doubt it means anything though :/

What happens if someone is holding to multiple acceptances after April 30? I mean if someone still needs more information (like financial aid package) before deciding, I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed to continue holding on to a seat. In that respect I feel the schools should release that information before or very near the April 30 deadline as a consideration to the applicants. I'm not sure most schools do though.

This is what I found looking over the AAMC Traffic Rules (Recommendations) for Admissions Officers (Rule 6b) (https://www.aamc.org/download/364264/data/2014trafficrules.pdf):

6) After April 30, each school or program implement school-specific procedures for accepted applicants who, without adequate explanation, continue to hold one or more places at other schools or programs. These procedures:
a. Each school or program should permit applicants:
i. A minimum of 5 business days to respond to an acceptance offer. This may be reduced to a minimum of 2 business days within 30 days of the start of orientation
ii. Submit a statement of intent, a deposit, or both.
b. Should recognize the problems of applicants with multiple acceptance offers, applicants who have not yet received an acceptance offer, and applicants who have not yet been informed about financial aid opportunities at schools to which they have been accepted.
c. Should permit applicants who have been accepted or granted a deferral to remain on other schools' or programs' wait lists and to withdraw if they later receive an acceptance offer from a preferred school or program.
I suppose you would have at least 5 days from April 30th to hold multiple acceptances, but it would probably be expected to write to the schools that you've been accepted to that you are waiting for this key piece of information. I do agree that something like financial aid information from schools should come sooner rather than later.

If one still held on to multiple acceptances after that? Maybe each school will write you a strongly worded letter :nono:.
