Please PM the essays or lack thereof to me when the secondary is available and I will update this.

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

Good luck, everyone. This thread is always pretty active, so post if you have any questions. I am a recent graduate and will answer any questions that I can. I know there are some current students who usually post here too. They will have even better info.

Good luck to all those applying to LSUHSC-NO. I am an incoming L1 (class of 2018) and can help answer any questions you might have about the application process from last year. Feel free to send me a message or reply here.

Thanks! I applied to the OT program and I'm still waiting to hear back. Which program are you in?

Are secondaries for early decision sent to all LA residents who apply for it, or is it selective?

From what I was told at my admissions review meeting, everybody gets a secondary but only 20 people will get interviews. After they figure out how many seats they have for EDP they except that many people then roll the rest into RD where most get in anyway. So it is coming....

Does anyone know realistically what my chances are like as an OOS with very strong ties to the state? I grew up in Louisiana, spend all of my summers with family in the area, and even have some medically related ECs/shadowing here. Will any of this help me my application or do they just see you as any other OOS?

As per MSAR data, your chances are about 7 in 1000 just on numbers alone. LSU will see you as any other OOS. Most of the 15 to 20 OOS seats they have are filled by people in special masters programs like Tulane's pharmacology and others. They have a policy for it. From everything I was told by admissions they hate people that try to use LSU as a second in state like school. I can imagine most state schools see things this way.

I am OOS too (with some ties). I'm just gonna apply and hope for the best.

They were accepting more OOS lately, I thought. I had heard upwards of 40 in recent years, but this information could be out of date.

Hey everybody has a chance and you never know what may happen, however some chances are better than others and if you objective is to get into medical school it is wise to select schools that give you the highest chance of acceptance. Unless you have talked to admissions and they have given you a huge thumbs up, applying to state schools out of state is a bit of a long shot in most cases.

eh... Whatever right... best of luck to everybody

Is anyone able to find the Technical Standards form to submit as part of the secondary?

Thanks! Didn't realize it was already part of that packet - thought it was a separate document!

LSU has a strong commitment to training students that they believe will one day serve the medical needs of Louisiana residents. That being said, if an OOS applicant has strong ties to the state and plans to practice here, then they should by all means apply to LSU.

The problem with this is in the term " strong ties". Too many people think this means well grandma lives here and I visited once or twice so I have strong ties. I was told directly by admissions you have to show an obligation to the state or a history in the state. I asked a lot of questions because I wanted to be sure of my status. I am considered in state and I am glad I pushed and asked questions. Others should do the same.

I'm applying particularly for grad studies here, but I noticed all of LSUNO science masters like Biochemistry and Immunology require GRE scores for some reason but is it okay to apply with an MCAT score instead?

They really seem to emphasize GRE because there's no place where they ask MCAT but I'm planning to write the score on the line after "If you have not taken GRE or TOEFL, give the date you plan to do so?". It doesn't make sense considering Tulane Masters explicitly wants MCAT (or GRE). I would link appilication but since I'm new and therefore not worth trusting, just go to their website under "Graduate Programs" and click on PDF application.

Best thing to do is contact admissions and ask. The LSU programs are hard science masters where research is a priority, at Tulane the programs are geared towards improvement for medical school so you take the same classes as the med students.

Just got the e-mail regarding secondary applications 🙂

Regarding this part of the secondary. "If you wish, you may attach a letter of reasonable length which contains comments that you feel will enable the Admissions Committee to better assess your qualifications for medical school."

Is a letter typically expected? Should we only list things not mentioned in the primary? The secondary has no essays other than this so I feel like I wasn't able to show much about myself compared to other secondaries.

It is a chance to explain yourself outside of your PS and tell them what part of your app are awesome or if you are OOS a great chance to explain your ties to the state. The questionnaire is a good way of figuring out your intended practice post graduation and for a school that really wants to build Louisiana doctors for Louisiana it goes to show your secondary revels a lot more about you even without an essay.
I submitted the letter with my app yesterday.

Is LSU your first choice school? If accepted to more than one school, do you still plan to matriculate here? If you answer "yes" to both of these questions, then you might consider elaborating on why you feel that LSU's program (and NOLA in general) is best for you. You can still submit a letter of intent later, but it doesn't hurt to include a brief mention of intent in your cover letter. Make sure that your cover letter school-specific (LSU is a good fit for me because...) and not too general (I want to be a doctor because...).

Any of you reapps put in all schools you applied to?

Hi! New to this site. I noticed some of you offered advice. I have a few questions. I submitted AMCAS on July 1, 2014. Does anyone know if this is too late for ED? Do you think I will struggle with a masters in Organic Chemistry/3.9 Undergrad Biochemistry/3.7 and 32 MCAT ? I also work as an ED scribe here in New Orleans. Nervous about admission. Last year I believe I turned in my application too late into the cycle (November). I did go for a meeting with the admissions chair to discuss my application. I am curious if someone can tell me about their acceptance experience. Esp. early decision. Thank you for your time. 🙂🙂🙂🙂

How long did it take after your applications were verified for you to receive secondary? Mine has been complete since July 1st and still no secondary ?

I was verified first week of June and got the secondary on the 30th. However, note that applications were not released to schools until the 27th. So ~ 3 days?

How did y'all go about filling out your secondaries? Do you think that LSUNO prefers you to type your responses into the PDF, or would they mind if I (neatly) wrote my responses in pen on their secondary application?

I know I'm splitting hairs here, but I wanted to double-check.

I'd think it's more "professional" or whatever to type it, but I don't think it'll matter much. Personally, I couldn't type it, so I wrote in pen. As long as your handwriting is legible, I don't see a problem.

Does anyone know if LSU-NO has accepted people with lower verbal scores in the past? Mine is SUPER low (6) 🙁

+1
I think the text became too small, once I had to describe stuff. So I wrote it in pen.

Their avg MCAT is 30. If your overall score is close to that, then you might have a shot. I just checked MSAR and their 10th percentile on VR is an 8. So sort of an uphill battle. Are you from LA? If yes, then I hope you're applying to Sherveport.

Unfortunately, my overall is low as well (26) with a breakdown of 10/6/10. I do have a 3.9 GPA and great ECs, but I'm just worried that 6 will be a deal breaker.

Yes, I'm from LA and applying to Shreveport as well. Everyone wish me luck! This is going to be a long cycle for me 🙁

I think you have a decent shot in that case. It's much harder as an OOS app. Good luck my friend!

Got an email a few weeks ago showing that my app is received but not complete. Has anyone been told they are complete?
I don't think they're sending them out yet. Don't know why though. I called the admissions office about a week ago and they told me my file was complete, but they still haven't sent the email.

Hey guys I stuck my head into the admissions office yesterday and was told they really don't send out complete emails but they will contact you if you need to do something. So if something is missing from your file or you forgot to sign something they will email you about it. Otherwise if you got a receipt and they cashed your check ( which they will not do until you are ready for review) you are complete unless told otherwise. Expect interview invite at the end of the month if you are EDP. Side note: This is the chillest admissions office I have ever seen nobody is running around in a super busy panic or anything, so worry not they seem very well in control.

I know that a 6 is the minimum you can have on a section to be evaluated, so it may not look great - but still feasible

Okay, I actually heard it was 7, but it wasn't a very reliable source. Where did you hear it was 6?

What do you guys know about the 32-hour policy? I emailed them asking if retakes could be applied, and I got a response saying "it should be upper level science courses", which sounds like a no. I'm thinking about taking 6 hours of retakes in the two classes I got a D in, and then the rest will be hours for the policy, meaning I will probably have to take a summer class or two. Anybody else trying to take advantage of this policy?

I just completed the 32 hour post-bacc, myself. Dr Eubanks told me that I could take any biology I wanted, so long as it wasn't like Intro to Biology or anything like that. As far as re-takes, if you want to re-take say Biochem because you made a D, that would be a good idea to utilize as both a post-bacc credit and to show that you can excel in that subject when you need to do it.

Good luck!
