2014-2015 Michigan State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@stigus and @Mack11 How did you find out alternate list? When did you interview? I interviewed 9/26 and was expecting to hear back today. I haven't received an email or gotten a phone call. I know they don't have to send out decisions today, but I assumed I would see one.
I'm in the same boat; hopefully we'll hear soon (and hopefully it'll be positive!).

under review since 8/'6...nt sure what to expect

Can I ask what you did to change your study technique? I took 2 MCATs and received the same scores.

Thanks!

Combination of two things.
1. I was a year advanced in my studies compared to the previous two. And the cellular development and histology classes here at Michigan State are the bomb.

2. I used a video series called CourseSaver (http://www.coursesaver.com/videos/MCAT/) The guy who teaches them is wonderful and you can speed up the videos. I pretty much did that for 1 month with a bunch of practice tests.

Keep trudging on!

Has anyone received an II after submitting their secondary post-9/1?

Do you mind sharing stats by any chance?
Its fine I don't mind at all 29 MCAT (10ps, 10vb, 9bs), 3.31cGPA, 2.9sGPA, 3.7MPH all from an ivy league school. I interview next friday if you have any questions I can PM you more about it. Thanks

Thanks so much! I appreciate it!🙂

Just got an email updating me that I am still under primary review. I was first forwarded for primary review 7/21, so I'm not sure what this means? Anyone? I'm hoping I've survived the round of rejections thats happening 🙁

I got a follow up email regarding the hold status, nothing they didn't say in the last email though

I just received the same email. Does anyone know if this is the same or different from the "hold for interview decision" mentioned here: http://mdadmissions.msu.edu/applicants/chmais.php
I don't think it is the same thing as the hold because the email states that we are still under review.

Just an FYI - they did state, all ii will be sent out by Jan. 31st. (unless someone cancels an interview and they need to schedule a new one)

Any new updates from people who have already interviewed?

Long time lurker, first time poster.
Accepted today! I'm ecstatic! I know stats will be wanted so here they are.

3.56 GPA - 30 MCAT (10-10-10) - Diversity in my E.C. with strong volunteering and research. Graduated from Michigan State.

Primary Application Processed: June 11
Secondary In: July 15
Interview: Sept 26

However, I think its important to post all of the MCAT's that I took. Yeah the first two suck, but I didn't give up. I recognized an error in my study technique and I fixed it between 2 and 3.
MCAT#3 - 30 (10-10-10)
MCAT#2 - 26 (7-10-9)
MCAT#1 - 24 (6-8-10)

Good luck to all of you. Never give up and never settle.

Congrats on your acceptance!! I was wondering how you prepared for the MMI's as I have an interview coming up for this school. Thanks!!

I know you didn't ask me, but I just interviewed on Friday. All I did to prepare was review MSU's mission and some basics about their school and reviewed my primary and secondary's applications. The interview day was extremely relaxed and there's not much you can do to prepare for the MMI. Don't stress about it.

Ahh that's soon- good luck to you all! Sending positive vibes your way 🙂

I won't be applying until next year, but I keep following this thread because I would really love to end up here. I'm a Canadian citizen with permanent residency in US. One of my parents lives 20 minutes from the GR campus. Would anyone happen to know the requirements to qualify for in-state status? I have a MI driver's license and one parent is working full time and paying taxes there...

For in-state status you need to work (and not be in school) as a legal resident of Michigan for 12 consecutive months prior to matriculation. I only know this because I just BARELY qualified to switch from Wisconsin to Michigan residency this year. I just graduated this August, so I am now considered an in-state applicant by all the Michigan medical schools as long as I keep working until August. 🙂

Thanks for sharing that! And that's awesome you're now considered IS for all the Michigan schools. 🙂 I wonder if having ties to the state through parents also contributes to IS status, but perhaps better to contact individual schools.

Do you know if it has to be full-time work or can it be part-time? And could it be *any* 12 months before matriculating to a MI med school? In another words, what happens when you've worked for 12 months in MI and then spend 2 months elsewhere before matriculating?

I would call the financial aid office. The assistant dean that we talked to says that there are people who take this route, especially the OOSers, so they would definitely be helpful!

I would think that should be fine, but like Heplayer92 said you should probably ask admissions. I talked with Brian Ulrich about this a few times last year just to make sure I was on the right track. You could probably ask for him, he was really helpful.

I'm right there with you guys. Complete early August and still no word. Might be that I'm OOS?

on their website it says ~20% of each class is OOS, so odds are slightly against you but im of the belief that no news is good news right now!

My entire family is from Michigan, but I was born and raised in California. Hopefully I hear from them soon...I really like the program.

Anyone interviewing on November 20th in GR? I plan on exploring the city a bit and wanted to know what to do while I'm there. Thanks!

Interviewed 10/17, accepted last night by phone. Can't wait to meet everyone already accepted and good luck to those still waiting.

Wow, 5 day turnaround, congrats!! I interviewed that day as well. Fingers crossed!

Does anybody know if this is pretty standard for msu? Interviewing on Friday and it's one of my top 3 choices, so I'd love to know that soon!

They're fairly transparent with their decision making progress, so definitely ask if you have any questions while you're there. They say that our group (10/17) will hear back anytime from this week til before winter break =O. Good luck at your interview

If you scroll to the bottom, those are the planned days to release decisions (aka, the day after the committee meets). During my interview, the dean made it sound like if you interview before that committee release date, there's a good chance they'll be reviewing you at that meeting!

@SuperiorColliculus , are you staying in-town GR or by the airports, what have you? Grand Rapids was just voted again "Beer City, USA" so I would recommended checking out any one of the breweries. In town, Founders is one of the best. Stellas, while not a brewery, has great food and a really fun atmosphere. Depending on how much time you have, you could just walk around downtown, even from the med school, as there are a lot of cool little shops. The museums are cool as is Meijer gardens.

If you need to decompress after your interview, I recommend walking down to MadCap coffee, getting a FANTASTIC cup'o'joe, and people watching. For a little-big town, it is quiet entertaining.

I'm staying about 10 minutes north of the Secchia Center... Not sure of the area but its in GR. Yeah, one of my friends was telling me how GR has some cool breweries. Thanks for the references! I'll definitely walk around downtown a bit and check out a few places.

Interviewed on friday- totally in love. It is currently my second choice after my state school (those extra $35k/year are really hard to justify when my IS school is so good anyways). Everyone was really nice, the facilities were amazing and the students seemed very happy.Hopefully a quick turnaround- it seemed like we might know by 11/3! Good luck to everyone still to interview!

I think it's great that we could potentially hear as early as this Wednesday. I'm going to be so anxious until then!

Are students allowed to share what their MMI scenarios were, or do they make them confidential enough you aren't allowed to talk about them?

They are confidential; the point of the MMI is to see how you think and communicate without preparation. That said, the MMI is nothing to worry about. Think of it as a game!

We all signed confidentiality agreements. They were all fun/interesting though. No need to prepare much really, just be yourself and stand up for what you think it right.

Disclaimer: this is a little neurotic

If you're just touring one of the campuses that you didn't see while interviewing, it's okay to wear casual clothes, right? 99% of me is sure, but 1% wonders if they are still expecting professional dress from applicants throughout the cycle

I mean, I probably wouldn't show up in sweats, but full suit is probs unnecessary
