2014-2015 Oakland University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does IS/OOS matter here? MSAR says its a public school but on Oakland's website they say they are a private school and have no IS v OOS bias....?
i went to a preview day, they are private and have no state bias

What does the status menu look like when you're put on hold?

Someone answer this please. Need to know if I should continue to check my status every 10 minutes
I don't see an obvious place where they would change your status? I think most people have been saying email.

Have been hoping to see an "Interview" tab pop up...
Yeah but I think they email you shortly thereafter. Maybe interviews tomorrow on a Friday to make people's weekends? I don't think they have sent out much in the way of invites this week.

I think that OUWB is a private medical school, but OU is a public university. Not sure about the bias though, I would probably just consult the MSAR and previous acceptance data for that.

OU being a public school doesn't play into it. There is no bias. The initial classes may have had a few more IS students because more IS people applied and were willing to go to a school nearby. With no real numbers here, based on the class of 2018 FB group i'd estimate that it's about 60/40 OOS. Just a guess though.

They have been sending emails, at least, I got an email about the hold status notification. It's disappointing that they don't have a bias towards IS students, but that's just my wishful thinking though.

Also, do you guys know how often they re-evaluate people who have been on hold? Is it like they review all people on hold every time they send out II's or are there a set dates they look things over?

Any IIs since Tuesday?

I've been complete since 7/2 and no status update....really not sure if this is good or bad!

Dug through some emails and this as my timeline:

Secondary Received - 7/1
Secondary Submitted - 7/9
Application Complete - 8/13 (was waiting of LoRs)
Interview Invite - 9/5

So hang tight guys. They have a lot of apps to sort through and the number is increasing every year.

Secondary complete 7/1 nothing yet :/ This all makes me anxious

Rejected this morning. Well, didn't expect much. Good luck to y'all.

As I am sure you recieved! I doubt it is just talk.

For the most part it is just talk. Mcat/gpa mean everything unless you've go some really great life experiences. An admission direction basically told me to not apply unless i retook the mcat (sub 30). I didn't even get to tell him my experiences/EC's lol

That doesn't make a lot of sense since their average MCAT score is a 30, which means that ~50% of the class has an MCAT score sub 30.

sorry should have specified, I was talking about another school lol. It's mcat average was 32-33

Got placed on hold this morning. I was really hoping for an ii. Oh well! Good luck to the rest of you

But just because you have above those numbers doesn't mean you will be accepted, which suggests a holistic review at that point. No matter your ECs, many adcoms will associate a mid 20s MCAT with an inability to handle the medical school course load. So while it is holistic, it can only compensate so much for below average stats.

Sometimes sub 30 M

I wouldn't pour salt over applicants' wounds. Life circumstances are different. Some applicants had superb pre-med counseling, enough money to take MCAT courses and resources to do the extracurriculars they wanted, others did not. Some applicants will be able to express the difficulties they overcame, some will not.

Congrats to everyone who got II to Oakland and those applicants who did not your IIs are coming from other schools. Keep your chin up!

That isn't my point at all. My point is that it isn't fair to suggest that schools do not do a holistic review. I apologize if I came off as blunt or rude. I'm not trying to. Congrats to those with IIs and best of luck to those waiting on other schools!

What your saying is understandable. I was just suggesting its exaggerated.
Congrats to people who II's! I just want a status update already haha

Oh I don't doubt it. High tiers only seem to be interviewing 37+ MCATs right now. I'm in the same boat in that I want an update too! I'm complete at almost 30 schools and haven't heard anything.

Man.. I wasn't expecting anything! I woke up and looked at my email to see what secondaries to work on today, and suddenly saw a suspicious email with the words "interview invitation." I squinted really hard to see if this was true, opened it and nearly passed out lol. I am really grateful. I am sure you guys will get your II soon, we all have worked hard. Good Luck!

+1...
After seeing so many people with ii, many others put in hold and still others rejected (condolences) I wonder why my email is dead silent? Complete 7/2, hoping for an update! Patience is a virtue...

Man.. I wasn't expecting jack! I woke up and looked at my email to see what secondaries to work on today, and suddenly saw a suspicious email with the words "interview invitation". I squinted really hard to see if this was true, opened it and nearly passed out lol. As a reapplicant, with not the best MCAT score, and not a single II last cycle, just getting to experience this moment has been humbling sniff. I am really grateful. I am sure you guys will get II soon, we all have worked hard. Good Luck!

Ps: I am a perfect example of them taking a "holistic approach" while viewing apps.
Hell yeah. When did you submit?

Congratulations! It must be an amazing feeling. Good luck at your interview.

By the way, if you don't mind me asking: what did you differently this time around that you think might've helped get you the interview?

On hold email today morning.
I was expecting rejection so this isn't that bad.

Found this on last years thread for those on hold as well:

For those who were put on hold:
OUWB Admissions

App on hold? Hold is our way of communicating your app is still being considered. We deny apps we are no longer considering.

Just got an on hold email today. What are the chances on hold turns into interview?

Depends on how the hundreds of other apps they're going through turn out. There's really no way to tell.
