2014-2015 Oregon Health & Science University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The fact that OHSU puts so many people on a hold post-interview is frustrating, and I think they lose a lot of strong potential candidates through that methodology. Making 90% of the class wait until April 30th is, in my opinion, kind of preposterous. Either they thought the candidate was a good fit for the program or they didn't. I understand maybe they were in the "grey" zone about some, but I highly doubt that out of 450+ candidates OHSU interviews, they were unsure about 90% of them (aka 405 candidates). Does OHSU have to be so politically correct that they can't even make a normal 6-8-10 week decision about their candidates who spend a lot of time, money and effort applying to their program? (ahem, that beast of a secondary...).

Just an opinion. Still love the school, but this wait/hold status is a major buzzkill, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one out of ~405 of you out there who feels the same way.

Is it really 90% on hold?? I had no idea it was that many!

I also fund it frustrating but it's a buyers market so I can't completely hate them for doing it.

This is why OSHU admissions people tell you that you have a very similar chance of getting accepted if you interview in March as someone who interviewed in October. OHSU is not really a true rolling admissions school. They want to interview all of their potential students without missing out on people who might really impress them during an interview at the end of the cycle. For OHSU, numbers are only a small factor in this process. Personality, as well as a demonstrated motivation and dedication to medicine are what the committee looks for. How can they really evaluate everyone fairly if the number of offers they can give out gets smaller and smaller as the cycle progresses?

It's a stressful time for everyone involved, but trust the process they've put in place. It's a fair one. Good luck everyone.

Still waiting for my pre-II rejection, should come today or tomorrow.

Sometime shutting you down before putting a bunch of money into the interview and teasing you for months like a cat with a string is the better option. Vanderbilt did that to me and I respect them for saving me the time and money!

I'm so sorry dude 🙁... still no status change for me so they must have not gotten to me yet

Same here (no change) and I was a 11/14 interviewer (??). Maybe they only go over your file if your one-on-one is available to present. My one-on-one was an ENT who interviewed me in scrubs. I can imagine he has a busy schedule.

Yeah I am having a similar situation. I was 11/19. The mystery thickens

Just checked the portal and found out I've been rejected. Blergh. I guess it was a long shot being a California applicant with no ties to Oregon. Best of luck to everyone else!

Is there anyone out there who was put on pre-II hold that has actually been offered an II?

Does "by February" mean "by the end of February"?

I read it as by end of day Jan 31st. If someone told me I'd here by Friday I'd think by 5pm Friday. However I am sure that by February will get pushed back.

To those who have been to Portland and interviewed already, how is the public transit to get to OHSU? I'm at a hotel that has a complimentary shuttle to and from the airport, and it's close to a few bus lines that go to Collaborative Life Sciences Building. How reliable is transit there? Debating whether to rent a car or not.

Take the public transit, super reliable

I live in Portland and the transit is amazing. Between the many buses and streetcar that head to the south waterfront, you should be golden.

Good luck on the interview!

Totally agree here, plus finding parking near the CLSB could be irritating. Take the transit!

You can plan your trip on this website. It has never failed me.

Good luck with your interview!

Thanks, guys!

Has anyone heard anything about a facebook group for the class of 2019? I know there are groups for 2018...is this something we coordinate? It'd be nice to get housing set up and everything...

Good luck to everyone on hold for status updates or interviewing!

So, I Interviewed here recently and thought I'd say that Oregon students are lucky to have OHSU; that's a great place to go to medical school due to the huge, dedicated health campus, brand new facilities, and a competency based curriculum with tons of student support.

Thinking back about my interview day and talks with students, I didn't meet many (any?) OOS medical students; it doesn't seem like OHSU is very OOS friendly, either. And rightfully so. But, as someone who wants to practice in Oregon or Iowa, I can only hope that if I am offered a spot that I will make the most of my time spent there making connections for residency, rurally-related research, etc. Good luck everyone! Portland is awesome, by the way.

I think a lot of OOS choose not to go for financial reasons. I had the numbers of this years class and I think 90 percent were oregon residents or oregon heritage. Then like 5 percent WICHE and 5 percent OOS. Don't quote me on that but I'll look to see if I can find that again.

Sooooooo where are you guys getting this 90% hold thing? Is it imaginary or real?

I think it's been said its 80 percent hold. 10 percent accept and 10 percent rejected. It's what they say during interview day from what I remember.

I don't think anybody really knows, I certainly didn't hear this during my interview. Whether it's patterns of committee meetings or admission statistics, half truths become full truths especially when they're convenient to believe. Welcome to the application threads!

Hmmmm hopefully this week they release more info. If I'm on hold just tell me don't make me wait 11 weeks

Just checkin in OHSU fans! Any news on Dec 19 interview group? Boy waiting for OHSU is like watching a woman give birth to a baby. Good news is just got two interviews in Chicago area later this month and I am hoping OHSU can save me the trip but not counting on it! Wait, wait and wait more and hope not to get an ulcer. Still don't get me wrong OHSU is a fine school and the new facilities are very enticing but the bureaucracy is just out of control. And I am in state and out of state schools are treating me better---that is just weird! Good luck to you all and I hope one day we can all be docs and care for the patients which is the ultimate goal. No matter where we go we can all be healers and that should give us hope.

People from November are still waiting!

Dec. 19th here... no word yet. Friday will make it 8 weeks. Hoping they send out news to multiple interview dates this week! Feels like I am on an endless rollercoaster of emotion!

Hi all -- in an effort to procrastinate and avoid studying for end of week exams (dermatology and EPIC), I spent 30 minute agonizing over an SDN username and then thought it'd be a good idea to cruise on over here to say hello and to offer my support.

I am a current MS1 in the new curriculum and would be happy to field questions. We have finals coming up next week, but I'll try to check in every week or so and answer PMs and thread questions in boluses. MED18 is eager to meet MED19 and welcome you to our community.

Congratulations to all of you on your hard work getting this far and best of luck on all your applications/interviews!

When will OHSU show me some love?

You have to study for epic? Awesome!

Does anyone know how late OHSU offers interviews? Are there any in February or March?
Thanks!

I haven't heard a peep at all 🙁

Typically they interview through March. Also have you checked the portal?
