2014-2015 Oregon Health & Science University Application Thread

I know someone with a waitlist acceptance who will be declining and going elsewhere. So the waitlist will move at least one more spot lol. Does anyone know how many outstanding acceptances are out there?? (Number of spots still available/undecided)

I'm all for more hope! Didn't think they would tell us that... I figure that as students decline/refuse acceptances within the 1 week allowance, they admit new students from the wait list immediately, therefore I don't think there would be open spots..

I meant of the individuals coming off the waitlist, how many actual spots are still available. Another way to look at it is, the difference how many acceptances were acted upon and matriculating versus the available seats. Does that make sense or am I explaining this poorly?

I'm not understanding. But they do not over accept at all. If a spot opens they go to the next waitlist number.

At this point, they are ONLY offering acceptances if someone who is already accepted drops out. Therefore, they already have the number of students in the fall class that they expect to have on day 1 of orientation, so if someone declines their acceptance at this point, another from the waitlist is picked up.

As an example, say they gave out 250 acceptances by April 30. 50 people had already declined throughout the interview months, so say there were 200 students who accepted to matriculate up until April 30. Then, by May 1, 65 more people dropped OHSU. That would mean that there was only 135 still holding acceptances. At this point, the waitlist that was predefined by April 30th, would move up by the exact number of spots needed to fill the expected class size (I forget exactly what number they're targeting this year.. 167?) So 32 acceptances would then be extended to the first 32 people on the waitlist. After this, no more surplus acceptances are offered! Just a simple 1:1 conversion..

Yes, that all makes perfect sense but my question is different. In your above example you state "that would mean that there was only 135 people still holding acceptances".. So, if they accept 146, that means 11 spots are undecided. That #11 (undecided spots) is what I was asking about. How many of those spots are available?? Another way to put it... How many people of the 146 current acceptance offers currently out there are undecided on matriculating to OHSU?

I don't think they will tell us so we have no way of knowing.

This is one of those endlessly painful times, but you will survive and get through to a great med school in time if you really want it. Sending good thoughts your way (but also definitely accepting the spot at OHSU, sorry!)

Yeah I don't think you'd ever be able to know, because some may go unless they get offered somewhere else they preferred. But I don't think it's a quantifiable number, would be awesome though.

Yeah that's not something that even administration knows...I mean even if there was a nonrefundable deposit, people would still back out if they got an offer from their first choice. I'm pretty sure there's no binding matriculation contract

I think the key is in the difference of meaning of "students holding acceptances, " which is different from "guaranteed matriculants"

Exactly! You hit the nail on the head there.. A lot of variables play such as people with current acceptance offers coming off wait lists at other schools where they prefer (as exit only said.)

yup, so difficult to be sitting here.. speculating on the game of med schools!

How far do you guys think the waitlist will get to by july based on current trend? I just don't want to make it rain on another amcas application....

Hahhaha me too man :/ it can go anywhere.

I don't have Facebook. Any notable announcements other than 8/10 start date and 8/14 white coat ceremony?
Some information on housing, essentials of anatomy is .99 cents on the App Store right now, some events on campus (they are today so a little ). I think that's most of it so far.

Hey all, MS2 (or 3?) here. Avoiding week 3 of boards study. Never thought I would post in SDN ever again but it's amazing the things you'll do to avoid productivity...

First off, obligatory congrats to those accepted. I'm in the old curriculum so I can't really speak to anything you'll be experiencing, at least not in it's entirety (but some of it is built off us).

Second, I wanted to put in my two cents about anti-facebook folks. I personally can't stand facebook. Though it is 100% worth it to create a facebook for no other purpose than stealing the awesome (seriously) resources your classmates will put together during the preclinical years. Make a facebook. It also helps to commiserate (at times) with your peers. OHSU seems to have a pretty down to earth group of people. The sense of humor on my class' facebook gets me through the day.

ALSO: exitonly, glad to see you're excited. Though as your new big brother I definitely suggest taking down that table/information. Lots of personal info there. Unless those involved agreed to be put on SDN, of course.

Anyhow. Now that I've shown my face here I suppose I'll stick around for a bit and answer any questions/concerns. I've lived nearby campus for a few years now. Being in the old curriculum I've had the privilege to commute to school both on and off the hill.

...back to work.

Does anyone from last years entering class remember how many tickets they got for the white coat ceremony?

I think it was held at PSU so there was no limit, not sure if that is happening this year.

2. #104
🙂 fully expecting to reapply this year tho
It has been exactly one month since they finished the wait list, so to be on #50 already is pretty quick!

3. In the 60s... I'm planning on reapplying, but am sitting hard on crossed fingers!!!

Being wait-listed means they want you, they just do not have enough room to take everyone they like. We are so close! I know we will be doctors it's just a question of when 🙂.
Does anyone have their exit interviews scheduled yet?
