2014-2015 Quinnipiac University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On the secondary website there is a tab for additional information, where you can submit additional documents. What kind of things would be appropriate to send?

The secondaries are:

  1. What area of medicine do you envision yourself working in at the end of your training? What is shaping your vision?
    Current Word Count: 0/250
  2. What in your life experience or philosophy will help you work effectively in health care with patients and colleagues whose life experiences have been different from your own?
    Current Word Count: 0/250
Please answer only two of the questions below.
  3. Detail something about yourself (quality or accomplishment) that makes you extremely proud.
    Current Word Count: 0/250
  4. If you couldn't work in health care or the sciences, what career would you choose and why?
    Current Word Count: 0/250
  5. Give an example of when you have changed or altered your practice or behavior because of working with a diverse group.
    Current Word Count: 0/250

Still waiting on one too. They're probably screening us in batches.

I am too! I was submitted 6/4 and I'm assuming it'll come soon. Already got another MD one today.

I have a question about quinnipiac, if anyone knows the answer: I know that most people who go to this school end up pursuing primary care specialities and I'm very interested in primary care, but does quinnipiac prepare you for other speciality options as well and have students matched into other specialities (e.g. derm, radiology, anesthesiology)?

I'm wondering this as well, I'm interested in surgical specialties but I don't know if writing about being interested in surgery will get my app tossed since they focus on primary care.

received my secondary today as well. really excited about applying here. good luck to everyone out there!

quick question - is anyone else having technical difficulties with the secondary? it keeps prompting, "Page is incomplete" even though I have filled all the information on the page.

I had the same problem. I called them and they fixed it within a few hours. Give them a call.

Me! Looks like they must be doing batches, since there are a bunch of us without them. I'm trying to keep myself busy with the other five I have so far to work on.

Never mind, just got it! Apparently the trick is to comment that you don't have it, then you'll get it 😉

OMG. Just got a secondary. So happy to have passed the screening here.

If I recall correctly, out of 290 screen applicants, 230 got an interview last year.

Good luck everyone!

Wow, that's awesome! I just got my secondary too. I'm so relieved.

Ah, that is weird. I saw those stats presented in last years thread. I didn't take the time to look at it close enough. Whoops.

On another note though, what do you all think are the requirements which get you past the screen?

Nobody knows, I kinda wanna call and find out lol

Bummer. Can't send in my secondary until my committee letter comes in. 🙁

The committee letter process or applying without one? If your school doesn't have one, then you will have to get the required # and type of individual letters for each school you apply to.

lol no, I'm talking about the committee letter process. Like who is the committee and what do they do, etc?

According to MSAR 371 people were interviewed last year so I'm not sure where you're getting your data from. I don't think it's anything to get excited about if you receive a secondary. I literally haven't seen a single person not get one yet.

Who is your daddy and what does he do? (sorry but kindergarten cop is amazing)

The committee usually has several people interview you and give their recommendation on you. At my undergrad it was 3 interviews and you were graded on a 1-5 scale by each person, with the premed adviser then writing a letter which serves as the "school's" recommendation of you to med schools, signed by the 3 interviewers as well. At least that's how it went at my school.

Ohhh - sorry. For my school, you have to give them everything but your first born - lol. I needed to get them:
1) my transcript. Yes, I had to print out my transcript from the school I go to and then send it back to that same school.
2) my degree audit printout showing how close I am to graduating. Again, it's on their website. Not sure why I needed to print it out and send it right back to them.
3) a printout of my completed AMCAS application
4) my MCAT scores (even though they are already on the AMCAS app)
5) a list of the schools I'm applying to (again......it's on the AMCAS app)
6) a list of people who will send them LOR
7) another list of professors at the school who can comment on my abilities
8) a picture
9) an autobiography and list of any scholarships, awards, and ECs

Then you must agree to mentor underclassmen who are interested in medicine throughout the school year, go to mandatory meetings for peer review and mock interviews, etc.

It's quite a process!

Well thank you, Debbie, for killing my excitement. If you scrolled up a bit, you might have seen where we got the data from. Have you really failed to see a "single" person not get a secondary yet? Classic.

This sounds beyond miserable.

Exactly what I was thinking, classic sdn Debbie haha

I think he or she has a great point. The stats posted are very wrong- this "screening" is to meet minimum eligibility requirements, which from a similarly ranked school I applied to is a 24 MCAT and above a 3.0 GPA.

http://www.quinnipiac.edu/academics.../school-of-medicine/admissions/class-profile/
As you can see, the class size for 2018 is growing to 90 students and about 500 interviewed. The MSAR and QU don't list the number of apps verified and marked complete (secondaries and letters in) so saying that 10% interview is likely false.

Got my secondary on 6/30, and I was verified exactly two weeks earlier.

Does anyone know if you can submit your secondary without AMCAS having received your letters of recommendation? On the secondary it says: "
Before submitting your Secondary Application, please ensure that all authors whom you are expecting to submit recommendations on your behalf are listed above. If authors are not listed, please confirm that their recommendations have been submitted to the AMCAS Letter Service."

Does this mean that you can't submit the secondary until the letters are available, or that you just have to indicate the letters you are expecting on AMCAS?

I'm also waiting on my committee letter. It wouldn't let me submit so I contacted admissions. I'll let you know when I hear back, but yeah...I'm guessing that we will have to wait until our letters are in.
