2014-2015 University of Alabama Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well in their defense, they did create the waitlist a whole two days before it was due-I've never turned in a major project that early...
If you could keep changing the due date like UAB you probably would have turned in every project early. Don't forget this is what UAB's Admissions website says (at least until they see this post and go change it):

Following your interview a decision will be made on whether to offer you acceptance. Final decisions are made in late March or early April.

But they've never been late to an official deadline-just their own flimsy ones. They have almost an entire 48 hours to get it out! They just like biding their time-applications open in June. What's the rush? We can knock this stuff out later.

This is reminding me of a line from a song (can't remember the artist) my Mom played in the car years ago.

"Take it to the limit one more time"

I am planning on attending UASOM. The scholarship from USA wasn't really enough to make that much of a difference. My only drawback with UAB has been how much higher USA's step 1 scores have been over UAB. However, UAB changed it's testing from lecture based to step 1 based 2 years ago so this years step 1 scores should be higher. After I found that out, UABs facilities and research opportunities sold me. Plus, Birmingham > Mobile.
Did you get Birmingham for the last 2 years?

I am ACTUALLY convinced they're gonna have the list out in mid-May- I mean why not? Putting it out tomorrow has absolutely 0 significance because those accepted won't even have 24 hours to think about their one acceptance to keep.

Jesus dude do you even want to go to UAB? Stop complaining about the process. They take a long time especially running a brand new interviewing process this year.

Is that why they got their secondary out two months after every other school I applied to?

Do they actually have to have it out tomorrow? And people should probably already have their decision made on which school is number 1, so if you are accepted to multiple schools you can just pick the one you want to go to the most.

I'm with you there. Should the unbelievable happen and I get into both UAB and USA, I have the rankings worked out already:
1. UAB (Birmingham all 4 yrs)
2. USA (after Birmingham they have the most residency programs which IMHO = better experience during clinicals)
3. UAB (Huntsville)
4. UAB (Tuscaloosa - would've been #3 but I'm not a Bama fan)
5. UAB (Montgomery)

If I add the "getting jerked around" factor to the decision then #1 and #2 get flipped!!

No one can control when the waitlist goes out, so there's no need in worrying about it.

Its not like its a force of nature. Its release date is literally created and released solely based on the actions of human beings who are just as capable of making mistakes/being rude as anyone else.

I'm saying there is no applicant that can control it...

Everyone on this thread should just be grateful for where they are, instead of b*tch*ng about everything. No one can control when the waitlist goes out, so there's no need in worrying about it. This is just how life works (UASOM has something you want and you're just going to have to play by their rules if you want to get it).
So those of us without an acceptance to any school and anxiously waiting to see if we even made the waitlist should be just as grateful as someone like you who was accepted back in February? If you're able to do that, I'm willing to swap places with you. 😉

Not at all what I was saying or trying to get at, but great assumption.

It's been a longa$$ process, and they surly been the worst for me as well, from the interview itself till now! A little b*tchin doesn't hurt anyone 🙂

...and if a little b*itch*ng and venting offends those of you on the thread who have already been accepted then the class FB page might be a happier place for you to hang out.

Well for everyone crying, tennessee hasn't released their waitlist yet. They actually SNAIL MAIL final decisions today. Tulane also hasn't released their waitlist either. Uab is not the only school on the planet who hasn't released final decisions until the last day. USA is actually the only school I interviewed at that has released all their decisions.

Speaking from my experience, UAB has been the kindest and most welcoming experience of my interviews. (5 interview invites, 4 interviews, 2 acceptances, 1 waitlist) they have always been straightforward with their process, and yes, waiting from December to march sucked, but in the interview they blatantly said, don't expect to hear back until march or April, so although I was abxious, I couldn't be angry because it's not like they said "you'll know in a week". I know that missing their set deadline is super frustrating, and I'd be frustrated too, but aside from pushing back sending out the waitlist (which may still happen before the aamc deadline) they have been the best experience I've had. I'm also extremely grateful that they take a long time reviewing each applicant personally, because if they went by the majority of mcat and GPA (which I'm willing to bet that a majority of the schools who get answers out so quickly do), I probably would not have been accepted, despite my stellar ECs and amazing interview. My mcat was low enough (not horrible but definitely not great) that I didn't even get an interview with South. Disclaimer: I'm not saying not to be frustrsted, because I would be, too. But I don't think UAB is purposefully being vindictive and aside from being frustrated with pushing the deadline, I personally don't see how they've been rude in any way. They've been extremely friendly and helpful in answering any questions I've had. Just my two cents. 🙂 here's to hoping they put out the list today so yall can get some answers!

Crying?! Crying?! I mean a few tears here and there, barely made the pillow wet!

No one has claimed UAB is the only school on the planet that hasn't released their waitlist yet, but knowing there are other schools equally indifferent to applicants provides zero comfort. In addition to USA here are a few other competent admissions offices in the SE that have more consideration for its applicants:
- Vandy (waitlist out in late Feb)
- Duke (waitlist out early-March)
- MCG (waitlist out mid-March)
- Emory (waitlist out 4/1)

@rugger4 and @Zippy92, I'm sure Dr. Smith appreciates you coming to UAB's defense, but its easy for those who have already been accepted to say how great UAB has treated you and lecture the rest of us about patience and crying.

I called the admissions office on Tuesday and they said the final decisions would be out on the 30th (today). Now they could've been just making that up--- so take it for what it's worth. But it sounds like they are actually shooting for today.

I'm not lecturing anyone, like I said, "I would be frustrated, too," I'm saying that aside from the deadline being pushed back, UAB hasn't been rude or inconsiderate or treated anyone unfairly. Pushing a waitlist deadline doesn't make a school incompetent. I've been through hell and back through the application process so I understand frustration, trust me. I'm glad other schools got their lists out early but that doesn't make any other school that waits until the deadline incompetent

@Ssina ("they surly been the worst for me as well, from the interview itself till now!") and I would disagree. Hey, we're obviously not going to change each other's minds, and reasonable people can disagree, so maybe its best to agree to disagree on this one?

I'm looking forward to the possibility of some spirited debates with you guys about medical topics next year, but only if.......

On a lighter note, I'm looking for a roommate to split an apartment in Birmingham for next year. I'm not sure if I'll be going to UASOM, but I will most likely be in Bham. Not to go too eharmony on this but I'm male, 22, clean, go out 1-2 times a week. Looking to spend 550-800/month and probably live on Southside/Highland Ave. I've lived downtown for the last year and am familiar with the area and solid apartment spots. If you're interested, shoot me a message and we can trade info. Good luck to those of you who like myself are waiting to hear from UAB!

When I was in town for interviews it seemed like there were a lot of new apartment complexes being built along 20th St. not too far from the hospital. Some were part of a mixed use (Starbucks, Publix) development. Do you know if any of them will be finished in time for the incoming class? Is downtown a safe place for an evening run? I like to run....just not for my life.

There are a lot of apartments in the area that you're talking about, they are usually a bit pricier that deep into downtown. I would be a little hesitant to run at night on northside which gets sketchy IMO but southside isnt bad and there are plenty of great and safe places to run

Right there with ya. I love to run and got to know bham while in college. I don't know how safe it'd be to run downtown at night, at least not for me.. But even if you live downtown, there's some great trails running through mtn Brook and homewood that are close by and awesome to run. I see friends that are at UASOM run the same trails for a quick study break.

Called the admissions office literally 3 days ago and they assured me it would be the 30th.... That being said, I have an email that says that it was going to be April 15th as well and that definitely did not happen.....

I think I've figured out the reason for the delay. They're trying to figure out who the more outspoken posters on this thread are so they can make sure we don't make it past the lower tier...if we make the waitlist at all.

Time to go to ground.:hello:

Rejected . So my questions now are to anyone who has had to reapply. For the primary application, do you have to change your personal statement or is it okay to leave as is? Second, who do I contact at UAB to ask WHY!?

So I am holding an acceptance at both south and uab, but I want to wait to see my campus assignment for UAB. That will ultimately decide what school I attend. Anybody give me advice on conflicts with deadline of holding two acceptances?

First off I'm sorry to hear that. Two you can keep components of your essays but you need to add aspects from things you will do this year. I believe it is Cathy O'Malley to request feedback

Alternate list.

No tier explanation.

I don't have a reaction image to express this level of dissatisfaction.

Right there with you Wasteofspace323.

Alternate list, no idea what tier!

I saw they started accepting some people off alternate on May 1st last year so I would assume they'll rank it out and start moving the list soon!

"you will receive further communication about your level on the Alternate List"

Oh, I get it. They just didn't finish the tiers in time.
