2014-2015 University of Alabama Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They just won't do it. Its not like they're forced to. They clearly feel no obligation to keep to their word. They blow off their own deadlines regularly. The only reason the WL was even released by april 30th was because AMCAS deadlines. I've given up on any level of professionalism from this school. I don't know why i'm surprised.
Don't expect UAB to notify us of tiering. It's an ego and image issue for them. For the past few years it is common knowledge UAB ends up sending out a lot of acceptance letters just to fill their class because many who are already holding an acceptance letter from another school turn UAB down. By not tiering this year they can check AMCAS first to see who on their waiting list has still not been accepted anywhere and accept those applicants first (without being constrained by their tier rank) improving their chances of not being rejected by an applicant.

I don't think that's true. At least, that's not a very good way of doing it. I've been accepted else where and will not be attending that school if UAB offers me acceptance. A lot of people accept other offers without knowing if their top school will accept them or not because they don't want to lose their opportunity to go,at least, somewhere for medical school. So really... I don't think they would do that. Is this assumption based on any factual knowledge?

Simply my hypothesis based on:
  • UAB's stats which show they end up accepting 85-90 more applicants than they have spots (meaning they get rejected by 85-90 applicants).
  • The fact that they often end up scrambling around and accepting applicants a few days before orientation starts
  • The fact that schools now have access to AMCAS info showing where applicants have already been accepted before they decide whether to accept the applicant themselves.
  • Posts from other UAB threads where someone was initially lower tier and was accepted ahead of middle tier, which was then explained away by UAB as an "error" in the initial tier assignment
  • The fact that UAB has apparently decided not to post tiers this year even though they have already started accepting from the WL, which eliminates the inconvenience of having to explain how a lower tier applicant got accepted before those in the middle tier.
Again - like many posts in SDN - just one person's theory. If this is not the explanation then incompetence and lack of consideration are all we are left with to explain why UAB has not honored its commitment to notify us of our tier rankings in May.

Congratulations for already being accepted elsewhere. I'm hoping UAB's waitlist acceptances free up a spot for me at South.

Occam's Razor, in my opinion. Anyway, I hope you're right because if so that would benefit me since I haven't been accepted anywhere hahahahahaaha (kill me now).

Financial aid came out today. Has anyone on here received a scholarship from UAB? Just wondering if scholarship decisions came out today with financial aid.

My scholarship notification came in April, so I'm not sure if they are still sending them out.

Hypothesis: Debunked.

has anyone gotten anything other than upper third?
I know someone in the middle tier. I would imagine all those who frequent SDN who have been placed on middle or low tier might be bit more hesitant to share their placement.

Upper Third. In years past, they have rolled through the entire upper tier without fail, but I don't know what to make of this. Especially since the waitlist came out so late compared to previous years. At this point, schools can see their applicants' acceptances, so if you had an acceptance to somewhere like UA, and were waiting to see what happened on a waitlist at Vandy/Tulane, UA probably gave you a deadline to commit/withdraw. I imagine that deadline was last month too.

For what it's worth, I think the alternate list positions are a little bit... doctored. Since the list has been out over a month, I have a suspicion that UAB has have thrown it together after the fact.

I was put on the lower-third tier, for instance, but I have already been accepted to another school and accepted their offer over a month ago. I have a friend who has no acceptances, and was put in the upper third. Our stats are pretty close, with me edging him out in virtually every metric, so I honestly think that, in at least some way, the positions reflect your status with other schools and not just raw numbers.

Have any of you who are in the upper tier been accepted elsewhere? That might be a good thing to look at if you want to judge the positions a little better.

Upper third, no MD acceptances (DO bound unless something happens here). My stats are far from impressive, but my extracurricular and interview are beyond exceptional I'd say.

Middle, on three more waitlists for M.D. It's how the cookie crumbles sometimes. Just because you get an acceptance at school X, doesn't mean that school Y wants you as much, even if school X has higher admissions criteria. Why didn't you withdraw your uasom app after you took a seat somewhere else?

That might be the case. I was just putting forward my thoughts on the matter. I didn't withdraw my application because I didn't have to, and I was still hoping that I would get accepted.

I was placed in upper third and did have an acceptance elsewhere, I was also accepted shortly after. I don't think this theory holds to well.
Keep in mind your stats aren't a large determinant in you placing in tier. Its likely your life circumstances, interview score, and MMI score that go more into determining your tier. After all, most of us who were placed on the WL likely have very similar and average stats as far as MCAT/GPA goes. However, I wish you luck. Best wishes.

Just because you accept an offer for security doesn't mean you have to withdraw your applications elsewhere. You just need to withdraw your acceptance from that school if you end up getting accepted at you school of choice after you've made the acceptance official. Always better safe than sorry. Not everyone wants to go to the first place they are accepted.

Congrats to all who have gotten off wailist. That being said, am I the only one who thinks it's bizarre that only 2 SDNers have reported getting accepted since the tiers were announced. Also, looking back at recent years, the waitlist seems to move relatively quickly through the first tier. I know this cycle has been abnormal but by this point much of the first tier has already been accepted traditionally. Thoughts?

I created an account to talk about this. I'm in the first tier so I've been holding out hope. I had a buddy get accepted off the first tier this week but he doesn't post here. I'm very close to just signing a lease here in Auburn and fully committing to VCOM because I don't think the waitlist is really moving and it's about time to pick somewhere to live.

Glad I am not the only one thinking the list isn't really moving like it has in past years. I am also facing the same problems as you because of this! Good luck to you ^^

Came off the waitlist a couple days after it was released / didn't fulfill my moral obligation to report it to this thread // Now I have a clean conscience. Good luck everybody! It can be a frustrating process, but if you request feedback, and do everything on their checklist, you'll be a lock next year.

has anyone gotten anything?

There was someone in our thread who said he got in a couple days ago. (Saturday) I wouldn't bank on many more withdrawals. It's only as aggravating as you make it. You kind of have to hold these things in perspective.
