Just got a pre-interview email saying they are unable to extend an interview to me at this time (primary screening phase) but am considered a competitive applicant and will continue to be considered. Has anyone else received such an email and has anyone been successful getting an invite after such an email? Am more confused now after receiving this, It feels like a rejection but not entirely. I really don't know what to think.

I got one of those last year and then an II. It's not over!

How long was your wait before they extended an interview invite? I'm dying... On hold since beginning of October
Not long, so I'm not the best example. However, one other person who was going through it all with me last year got an II just before Turkey Day after being on hold since August and she was admitted.

I have also got a similar pre-interview email but they didn't mention me being competitive. They did say my file remains under consideration. I completed my application mid-August and received the email start of October. I hope you hear some good news soon.

I was talking to someone who was on the admissions committee In previous years. He explained, during the next few months only the "no question candidates" will be accepted now. Very few per cycle, (5-10). March comes the fun! More than half the class develops at the very end of the cycle.
Hmm, I heard they accept approximately 30 per round?!?!?!

I don't think that's it. When I interviewed they told us how it works. There are several subcommittees that comprise the admissions committee, and each subcommittee debates a certain number of applications. Then, I think 5 (this number could be wrong) are brought to vote to the full committee from each subcommittee. If I remember correctly, there are 5 subcommittees, which would mean the committee would vote on 25 (ish) at a time.. not accept 25 at a time.

I'm fairly certain that's how it was explained to us. But, then again, this was back in early September, so I could have some of the details incorrect.

I was told by a few 2nd years that they accept 30ish per round. However, you could very well be correct. So do you know how many they accept per round (if they vote on 25 each time)?

I have no idea. It's probably variable from round to round, I would imagine.

They have ~7 interview dates. If they accept 30 per round, that is 210 acceptances total for a class size of 115. I think that is very reasonable.

I think they have 9 interview dates this cycle.

If last year is any indication, and it may not be, it went something like this...I got seven of those "Acceptance Update" emails, roughly one a month, on roughly the same day and time of the month, from November to April, when I got the final rejection email. I would assume that the rejection email also corresponded with an adcom meeting, but it might not have. Figure about eight meetings to send out 200 acceptances. The math is speculative from there...maybe they admit 100 at one and 5 at another, who knows?

As an aside, that email has the absolute worst subject line you could ever send to someone awaiting admission and should be reconsidered.

This was my experience last year as well. Also, I think they have fewer seats to offer this year because the 10 PMAP student from this year will have 10 of those 115 seats. So I think this year they may only offer 180 - 190ish seats as opposed to 200!!

Ya, 9 interview dates is probably most accurate; MSAR says 604 were interviewed last year, which equals about 60 applicants per date.
I interviewed last weekend and there were 20 people in my session...there were 3 sessions offered during the day.

It's an interesting question whether or not there is a targeted amount of acceptances per interview date (cycle). According to this thread, there were many deferrals made from the last interview date.

Are you sure that there were only 3 groups on your interview day? They normally have 4. During my interview day, we were told that they will interview 700 this cycle.

There may have been 4. But I believe the earliest session lacked two groups of 10, like mine.

Dows anyone know if this school accepts updates pre-II? I was put on hold and wanted to check in

Hello, I interviewed on 9/6 I believe (or sometime in that week). The last two weeks prior to last week I received the acceptance update emails notifying me that I had not been accepted, but am still part of the pool. I did not receive one last week, if I do not receive any kind of update today do you recommend I send admissions an email?

I'm expecting a similar update later today....I don't think you need to send an email...it is still early

Keep in mind that it appears you will only get the email when admissions sends out another round of acceptances and "holds." They have not sent out a round recently. They may send out something today, or Monday, or next Friday .... we don't really know when they meet apart from what their website says, "approx. twice a month."
Feel free to email though - you'll probably just get a generic response back.
Waiting is hard.

Are you serious!?! They are interviewing 700 this cycle?!?! That means our odds of getting accepted is like 25% now post interview🙁

How many Interview dates are left? any idea how many II left atm?

How do you know that they interview 60 per date?
2 groups at a time, approx. 10 per group... 3 interview sessions per day. I have heard on some days they interview up to 80 so I don't imagine Gordita is that far off with their estimates.
I would think (pure speculation on my behalf and rumors from others) that they will offer around 250 to fill the class, which I know sounds crazy when we think that only 105-115 (depending on PMAP people) spots are available in total. (I have had some people tell me that some schools need to offer 3x their number of spots to ensure they have a full class. Take it with a large grain of salt)

Either way though.... it's about darn time Tucson sends out some more acceptances (and even more waitlists I guess).

Hi there!

I received similar news and was assured that it does not harm my chances of receiving an interview invite and NOT to worry. I also went through some interview practice with their Student Recruitment services and was told that all my metrics and what they read of my secondary were all very strong. This is just how their decision making process is done and invites may not be given immediately. So chin up! You're still in the running 😉

For the past 2 cycles, they have been accepting ~180 and then another 20 or so off of the waitlist, so in total, they offer ~200 acceptances. It would be nice if they accepted 250 this cycle though?!?!?! And I completely agree,it's about time Tucson sends another round of acceptances 🙂

Anyone know how heavily the interview weighs on our acceptance? I know some schools pretty much accept based on interview performance ( because they have already weighed in other aspects of our application before that). Anyone know what Tucson does?

I asked that question during the closing on my visit day. Admissions Director said it's: "One of the things they consider" and then something about how they look at candidates holistically...

Does anybody know if Arizona is receptive to in-the-area emails? I will be in Tucson for the 1/10 interview date for something completely unrelated and would love to save on the costs if I do happen to get an interview later.

Hey everyone! I was put on pre-interview hold 10/03 and received an invite 11/20. So don't lose hope!!!

Very nice, thanks for sharing! I hope I get some good news for a change.

I don't think so but why not try? It shouldn't be detrimental.

Thanks!

Can someone maybe chime in as to what my chances might be? I'm OOS (CA), ORM, 31 MCAT (11/9/11), cGPA 3.66, sGPA 3.61 (LizzyM 67.6). Sucks to be ORM :/
I don't think anyone can accurately say what your chances are just based on numbers because there is so much more than just that to your application. I will say good luck though and hope you get good news

Thanks! Yeah, there's definitely a lot to my story above and beyond just stats, so I think I have that going for me. Overcame personal challenges, succeeded in a non-traditional career for a while before realizing my passion was truly medicine, demonstrated leadership in school and at work, etc. I think I have a good story to tell

Any speculation on whether acceptances will be sent out today or is adcom on holiday already?

Anyone else interviewing December 6th?

I'm so excited! It's too bad it's the Saturday before finals, though. So much to do! Eek! Help!
