2014-2015 University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Application Thread

I'm moving into Argenta Flats this summer - it's a new complex right across the bridge in North Little Rock. I looked at the Riverside apartments (brightwaters, etc.) and they just didn't seem like a good enough value or a good fit for us (me + wife + 2 dogs). We looked at quite a few different complexes and landed on Argenta because it was a good fit for us. Enough cool things in walking distance, close enough to school, close to the corner of the bike path loop - stuff like that.

Also, the apartments we were in the past year, the Berkley, we originally picked because it was a convenient location and had plenty of places to walk our dogs - anyway, it's a relatively convenient drive to UAMS (10ish minutes, pretty close to 430/630 interchange) but overall not a great living experience. They're not too expensive though.

Rockwater at Riverside is also on the North Little Rock side - a little pricier, but the complex and amenities seemed nice - there's a nice housing area being built close by, and it's right on the river. Also keep an eye out on craigslist - there are some multi-unit properties that are super cool that aren't the standard apt complexes! We saw 2 that were very cool - would have snatched it up if they allowed pets!

Anyways - best of luck to all on house hunting - I'm not an expert by any means, but I lived in LR for the past year and me and my wife did quite a bit of digging around to find the right fit for us - feel free to PM me if you have a question you think I could help with!

I sent my signed acceptance letter in last Friday, but have not received any confirmation from UAMS that it was received. Has anyone else received any feedback after accepting a position?

I don't think they send confirmation. I don't remember them sending it to me.

I got an email today telling me that they got my acceptance form. I sent mine in last Tuesday.

I received my confirmation email this morning at 1137.

I received my confirmation today too around 12. I sent my acceptance letter this Monday.

Either my letter didn't make it or I'm missing something. I don't remember (and cannot find in my email) a confirmation of my accepting my position. Guess I'll email and ask Ms. DuPuy...

I never received confirmation of receipt of the acceptance. I was able to verify it when I called Ms. Dupuy for a different issue, though.

And you also sent yours back in December, correct? Perhaps they didn't do confirmations at that time...?

Correct - I never received any email or phone call regarding receipt of the signed acceptance. The only correspondence I have had regarding the acceptance was an email to do the background check (certiphi) and then yesterday the confirmation from background check moving conditional acceptance to official.

Okay, same here. Thanks!!! I got a little worried!

The Office of Admissions is sending confirmation emails, but the mail has been delayed due to the weather last week.

I'm seriously considering living in one of the surrounding cities after looking at Little Rock elementary schools that are in reasonable places for a family. This is a very important factor for me when considering a place to live. I just started looking at Bryant, Maumelle, and Sherwood, but I don't know how these areas are and no clue about the commute other than what Google Maps provides. Does anyone have any advice/experience to help guide me? Any current students living a little further out for the same reason? Any information from people who live around there is much appreciated.

I just looked at two places in Maumelle. They were pretty nice as far as look/upkeep and price, and the commute shouldn't be too bad. It took about 15mins to get from there to UAMS.

I currently live in Bryant and plan to stay here throughout med school. I love the area. It's growing quickly, has several elementary schools to choose from based on bryant/benton city limits (which are very close to the same), and it is a safe area with many nice neighborhoods and apartment complexes. I work at Children's now (right down and across I-630 from UAMS) and it is a 20-25 minute drive with normal traffic. It's a straight shot with I-30 then I-430 and I-630 to UAMS. The drive doesn't bother me and it's worth it to have the little bit of space from Little Rock and all that comes with it. If you have any questions let me know!

Thanks for those replies. I'm going to keep looking into the different areas. I'm moving my son out of one of the best elementary schools in the country, and I don't want him to be bored if he moves to a school that doesn't keep him engaged as well. Any other comments/advice on this issue are welcomed. Thanks!

Does anyone have more information on the summer research opportunity? I'm interested, but I haven't had much luck with finding information about it.

Just letting everyone know that I've already heard that there has been some waitlist movement!!

Was it someone who applied for the rural practice program or regular waitlist? Either way, congrats to them!

Anyone seen or heard where you can find the match list for this year?

To apartment scouters: fyi, a few good places I've seen include shadowlake, governor's park, Lexington park, and Chenal pointe. I'm still looking, and I've looked at a lot more than what I've mentioned so far, so pm me if you have questions about apartments I may have seen so far!

Thanks! I'm looking too, but I haven't seen any in person yet so I don't want to post a list. I'll keep yours in mind.

Congrats on everyone who has been accepted, good luck to everyone on the wait list, and keep pushing you reapplicants!

I'm a graduating senior who matched into FM and have lived in LR most of the last 18 years, so if anyone has any questions about school or LR in general,(there's an ancient post under my name about neighborhoods out there somewhere which still holds up) please ask me here or PM me.

I loved going to school here and am really excited for you!

Don't stress about that right now. You will have PLENTY of time to look at opportunities when you get here. There is a structured program for "Honors in research" that you will get info on early in your M1 year and tons of emails during the year. Plus if you have a particular area you can always contract that dept directly and ask if there are projects you can help with.

Also seriously consider that next summer will be the only real break you have, research is a "nice to have", but not a must-do. a nice vacation and recharge will help you out just as much.

The LR public schools are in a weird place now. The State just took the district over and we really don't know what will happen. My kids are in public elementery right now but lucky enough to be in one of the few really good ones. I'd really consider looking at one of the outlying areas for school. The commute won't be much fun when you have to be here at 0430 for OB/GYN but might worth it.

Someone asked about match list from here. See attached.

Out of I think 156 who submitted rank lists, 143 matched initially and 3 matched in SOAP. About par for the course over the last few years.
