2014-2015 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They don't. You can send messages through the applicant portal, but only if they pertain to problems with the system, with your application, etc. They don't fwd any messages (update letter or otherwise) to the admissions committee. It's mostly the finaid, IT, or the registrar that will get the messages.
Thanks @pDeluxe 🙂

I thought they didn't accept updates? news to me!
This is directly from their website:

They state explicitly on the website, "all communication and updates related to your application..."

They may say that, but I know for a fact that they do not accept updates; I sent one directly to the admissions email, and they emailed me back explicitly stating this.

I have not heard anything back since I was complete (I was complete mid-July). Do you guys think there's anything I can do to find out where I stand?

It is possible that you are on a hold list, and your application will be reviewed again later in the cycle.

I just got a interview invite! Unbelievable as my stats are well below average. 1/23 is my date.
Am I practically fighitng for a waitlist spot or is there some hope for outright acceptance?

Really stoked either way!

When were you complete, if I may ask? Thanx

Quite a few people in our class were Jan. or later interviewers. And I believe that UCD accepts a certain # of people from each interview day, and waitlists another # of people from those days as well.

Thanks for your response! Do you have any idea whether people are given relatively equal chance once they are at interview stage? I am afraid that with my low GPA I will be fighting a real uphill battle even though, of course, I am delighted for the chance to interview at all.

While I don't know how they view each applicant once they get to the interview, you should know that they saw something they liked in your application (numbers and all) and decided to interview you so be excited. If you go into the interview thinking your chances are too low due your GPA, it'll probably show in how you approach the MMI. They want to know how well you'd fit in with the mission/atmosphere/student body/etc, and not just your scores.

It won't matter, because according to the website, it is a closed file MMI.

"Interview: We use the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) to delve more deeply into the applicant’s experiences and gain a deeper understanding of attributes relevant to a medical career. Our MMI is a blinded (closed-file) interview process."

in my experience that means that the person commenting on you during the MMI won't know your GPA, so their comments will be solely on your performance and hopefully will be unbiased

however, that doesn't mean that the admissions committee won't see your GPA. they'll have access to all of your data and will make a decision based on all of the information they have on you (interview notes included)

from my past interviews, I have a feeling that my lower GPA landed me into the alternate list
3.59 GPA/38 MCAT/interviewed 10/31/waitlisted 12/1

you got an interview, so that means they're interested in you!
just do your best at the interview and show them what you have to offer 🙂

Congrats and good luck!

PS: if you're flying in via SMF and wanting to save money, Good Nite Inn Sacramento is 10 minutes away from the med school (30 from the airport) and very cheap. it's really barebones (they dont even have an iron/ironing board) but it's a good place to stay. Budget rental cars were also very reasonably priced

I felt Davis was really interested in the whole person and how you fit in with their mission/vision. n=1, but I have a lower GPA than the above poster and was accepted in October at Davis. I agree with the rest, they wouldn't interview you if they weren't interested, so its your chance to rock it. Good luck!

Glad to hear people have been getting II's recently. Complete in late July and still haven't heard anything yet. Hoping for some good news soon.

Thank you all for your input. I can only try my best to impress and hope to for the best!

me too!

how long will they continue to ask new people for interviews? Are they still sending out some rejections or will we just get rejected at the end of the cycle? can any current Davis students shed some light on that? thank you!!

Im hoping that I am in a pile somewhere and they will get to me soon...
would be so grateful to stay close to my family!

So, if we're waitlisted, we shouldn't send an update letter, but just wait until April, correct?

I believe they interview people through the end of March, but I'm not sure about when the invites will stop going out. On the other hand, there is always the chance that someone drops their interview day last minute (for whatever reason), and they'll invite people to fill that vacancy up until the last interview day.

No updates are accepted. Just wait until acceptance or rejection notification.

thanks for your response!

Is there a "pre-interview waitlist" this year as there was last year? I haven't heard anything from Davis indicating that I am on one...

Where did you hear about such a wait list last year?

from comments like this...
"Has anyone on-hold for an interview received an interview?"

Do we know which is the most recent interview group that has heard back?

I'm still sitting on complete app, with no II or waitlist for II from Davis. Can I safely (sadly) assume this is a rejection from my top choice?

Called the office recently. Told them I was complete since mid-July, and they said I'll hear back by the end of the month.
so.... does that mean they won't be stringing along anymore of us who've been waiting awhile?

Hope some of us get lucky and get asked to interview "at the end of the month." Anyone IN THE KNOW out there... is it possible to get asked to interview this late in the game (for Davis specifically)?

I am actually pretty heartened/shocked see that some folks have received interviews this month. Fingers crossed and huge best of luck to everyone!

Just got this...what does this mean? Small-pooled? Passive aggressive rejection? Actual chance?

"Dear pedsmdplease:

The UC Davis School of Medicine Admissions Committee has reviewed your application. You have been placed on our Interview Wait-list. Each year a number of students are offered interviews from this list beginning in January. We will notify you by e-mail if an interview position becomes available.

Sincerely,

Office of Admissions
UC Davis, School of Medicine
4610 X Street, Suite 1202
Sacramento, CA 95817

Edit: Called admissions, they said this is effectively a small-pooled email and we'd hear by the end of January.

Has anyone done the student clinic tours? Are they worth attending? Debating as it would require extra day of lodging etc.

I went. It could depend on the clinic you go to, but they literally walked me around for 10 min and said that's it due to HIPAA codes. Got waitlisted- so probably wouldn't affect your post-interview status if you didn't go.

I received the same email. I was complete back in July I think. I figured I had been rejected by now. What exactly is small-pooled?

I was complete something like July 10th, so I assumed the same. From what I understand, getting small-pooled is when you're not a yes or a no for an interview, and they'll review your application as interview spots open up. For some schools (like GW, I believe) that get insane amounts of applicants, this is basically a polite rejection but in talking to current UCD med students, it sounds like we actually have some chance of an interview. But who knows!

Thank you. Who were the people who showed you around? Students or ?

BTW, it's kinda ridiculous how many people on this thread have penguins in their avatars!

Just got placed on the interview waitlist! Hopefully the list moves. It would be so awesome if I could interview at Davis! I was complete way back in July so this was super out of the blue.

I received one of those as well. I wasn't too surprised to not be invited to an interview as my interest in primary care/rural medicine is practically nonexistent. However, I find myself not very excited about this email.

Being placed on this list suggests to me that our applications were not as convincing as those of others who received an II. And if we go to an interview, why would the adcom pick us over those who were interviewed early on but were placed on a wait-list? If the committee makes a decision based on the written application and our MMI scores, It seems that we will have a pretty big hill to climb because the application part will be ranked lower than others, and we will have to really excel in the interview in order to be accepted.

Oh well...

Yeah...it's definitely a long shot but I guess I'm just happy it's a chance. I also personally know someone that had been placed on the interview waitlist and was eventually accepted. So there's a chance even if it's a small chance. But definitely won't get my hopes up for anything to happen.

Interview waitlist! Don't want to get too excited, but I'm hoping for some movement 🙂

Well if last year is any indication, I got an II on Thanksgiving and scheduled for Valentine's Day. Supposedly this year is even more chock-full of good applicants, so take that as you will.

Is anyone else scheduled to interview on 2/13. I got an interview invitation since November but that was the only date available. Now looking through these posts I am realizing I should have waited to see if something opened up sooner.
