2014-2015 University of California - Riverside Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My stats aren't spectacular: cGPA ~3.2 and MCAT 31-34. Strong upward trend in GPA (from freshman 1.0 to a 3.57 in subsequent years) with some unique clinical work experience. Non-traditional student.

I received a secondary from UCSD and UCI though. lol
31-34? lol.

What if the same experience answers more than one of these questions? Is it inappropriate to say "please refer to #__"?

Hurray! Finally got a secondary invite! AMCAS was verified 7/2.

I wish I got one too. Got secondaries from all other UC's except Riverside :/

I'm thinking of using the "At your option, you may use this space to provide any further information you may want us to consider in addition to the AMCAS personal statement." space to write a 300 word diversity statement (which includes talking about growing up in Riverside). Does this seem like a good idea?

for "What has been your MOST scholarly project (thesis, research, or field of study in basic or clinical sciences or in the humanities)? Describe one and give number of hours, dates, and advisor(s)." are they just asking for the name of the project itself? and not asking for us to go into in-depth what it was and what we learned from it?

I just said the name, a 1-2 sentence synopsis on the project, a 1 sentence description of my roll, and the hours/dates/advisor

Are you guys rehashing your activities from AMCAS in the activities section? It's not really clear, but would this include employment as well?

Talking about your connection to the area is a great idea. I'm also trying to decide if I will add a diversity essay. It seems excessive on top of the other 10 essays though.

for the education section, its asking for your undergraduate but nothing about graduate.. should i just still put it in there with graduate in quotes?

This secondary is pretty beastly. And I thought the six questions on OHSU was crazy.

For activities, do we predict the future end date and total hours?

They probably will not find out, if that's what you're worried about.

No, I'm not worried about that. It's just that for the UCLA prompts, I was required to shorten some of my responses. I ended up liking what I wrote, but now I'm worried about messing them up by adding additional information.

If you're happy with what you wrote, then there's no reason to add more. The 250 words is just a maximum; for the most part, concise is probably the best way to go.

In the activities section, is anyone listing any type of employment? I know that in the "Personal" section, it gives you an opportunity to add works experience, but that's specifically for work performed during college.

I'm adding employment and I think it's a good idea. Then again, I'm a nontrad with a bunch of work experience, so for me employment is a huge part of personal growth.

Yeah, I'm a non-trad too, so I actually have more work experience than I do actual extracurricular activities. Thanks for your input.

I'm listing employment in the activities section as well. Are you going to predict a future end date and future hours?

isn't it repetitive. They are going to see it twice on your application

It may be repetitive, but employment had a huge impact throughout my undergrad. I didn't want to just list it, I wanted to show that it was meaningful.

for the personal statement section is that anyting we want? like could i update the fact Ive gotten employed since I applied?

Why does it make it seem more meaningful by posting it in the activities section? I used my employment in many of the prompts, so I just figured it was alrdy assumed that it had a huge impact throughout my undergrad, when the readers see it. It seems pointless to have an "employment" section then in the first place
For me, my most meaningful experiences were during my employment while I was not in school. This seemed like the most appropriate place to mention them as they are all clinical and leadership type experiences.

"Describe the manner in which your experiences demonstrate your understanding of, and commitment to, underserved communities . Please limit your response to 250 words"
Does the term "experiences" refer to my extracurricular experiences or experiences as a disadvantaged candidate?

No VISA credit card option for fee payment?? REALLY???? :arghh:

Are you joking? What do they take? Amex?
Yeah...Amex, Mastercard, and a 3rd one I can't remember -______- There's also the option to do a direct bank account check...pleasepleaseplease don't get hacked UCR
