2014-2015 University of Cincinnati Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know this might not be the place for this, but UC is my number one school. I plan to apply to their early decision program. Any advice?
Don't apply to their early decision program just because it is your number one school (assuming you are referring to the EDP route). It hurts your chances at any other acceptances and doesn't really help your chances at said school. You should only do EDP if you are 1) an incredibly strong applicant, and 2) you have extenuating circumstances that mean you MUST go to Cincinnati (eg a partner that can't move, etc). If you have more questions feel free to PM me, because as you guessed, this thread is not really the place for your question.

Are you from Ohio? What's your gpa/MCAT?

Yes. I've lived in Ohio my entire life. I'm a graduate of UC, in fact. I took the MCAT back in August, but due to a number of factors, did pretty bad (21), so I'll be retaking it this year. My GPA from grad school was a 3.6 something.

Like cs24 said, I would recommend not doing EDP. I was in a similar situation last year and thought about applying EDP (undergrad GPA 3.7, MCAT 31, IS, UC grad) and I am glad I didn't, because I interviewed regularly, got waitlisted and got the rejection email the first week of their orientation. Unless you get a really high MCAT score when you retake, there's not much of a chance of getting in EDP and then you will be behind in applying to any other schools.

Just interviewed here. IS, LizzyM low 70s. Pleasantly surprised by many aspects, liked the MMI concept. Liked my fellow interviewees as well.

Based on the literature I got at my interview, UC is looking for a 33-34 on the old MCAT.

When did the interview day end for everyone? I'm trying to figure out when to book my return flight. Thanks!

Mine ended right before 3PM, and that is what the schedule for the day said!

Again, much information here. Just because a school's -average- MCAT is a 33.xx does not mean that the school is "looking" for that score. An average MCAT is just that: a mean. Some will be below, some above.

No, it was for an interview...

I think he was asking if the interview was for a spot on the waitlist... When it gets late into the cycle UC will offer a few interview positions only for the waitlist and they will tell you that in the initial email. At least this is what happened last year...

It didn't say anything about a wait list so I'm assuming a regular interview.

Alternate list, OOS and interviewed 2 weeks ago. Most of the interviewees seemed to still be in undergrad.

PM me if you have questions about the interview

EDIT: Let's take comfort in the fact that each of us has company!

How late does the interview day go?? I have a 12:00 check in time.

Just received an II this morning. as an FYI: I am IS and had received both of the "your still in the running" emails

Congrats!

When are the available interview dates? An email I received at the end of January said there were 6 interview days remaining, with 2 days still having available seats.

I was only offered the date of March 5th. There was some indication that I could request an earlier date, but the time offered worked for my schedule so I don't know of any others. Best of luck.

Also got an II for 3/5. There's an option to reschedule but I wasn't given a choice otherwise.

I interviewed back in October and was given a single interview date (and a number to call to change.) I think that the "show up at this time" is just policy, not specially brought in at the end of the cycle. Good luck to everyone--it is a nice school.

Ah hope I can be lucky to get an II here!! But as March approaches hope fades...

I had a time of 9am and got out before 3pm--I think at about 2:30pm--if that gives you an idea of how long it might take. If you're concerned for travel reasons or such, the admissions office would likely be more than willing to give you an estimated finish time. Good luck!

Lol, I know this is kind of delayed, but I just wanted to share that I was interviewed back in early January and was accepted about 2 weeks later! 31 MCAT and ~3.9 GPA.

On a separate note, does anyone know how housing is supposed to work?? Is it basically just up to us to join the Facebook group and ask people if they'd like to room? Or Craigslist (this creeps me out for some reason lol), or some other resource?

Thanks!

Craigslist killers operated not so far from Cleveland, Ohio. . . .http://www.gq.com/news-politics/newsmakers/201407/craigslist-killers. (I've had some very positive experiences, however!) Second look can be an opportunity to connect as well.

It's your first test as a medical student.

I don't live on campus but there are $ome apartment complexes that seem to house majority UC students (Stetson, for example). There's no point in looking so far ahead for a late July-August move-in date IMO and the availability of convenient apartments will be dependent on student leases expiring.

I would recommend not living with someone in your class. I didn't (and I'm very glad of that), but a lot of my classmates did and it didn't work out (there were also some that it did work very well for). Agreeable personalities/being a good roommate aside, living with another person in your class can be very stressful. I would suggest looking for M2-M4s who need a roommate (there's some way to do that, but off the top of my head I don't remember if it's a Google group or on medonestop) or trying to live with a first year pharm student.

Great, thanks for the suggestions guys!

@The Helpful Aye Aye: yeah, I think you're right about maybe waiting a bit longer before thinking about the whole rooming thing. Maybe I'll think about it more seriously after the first-look event...

@BengaliBrat: if I wasn't scared of Craiglist before, I am now lol. Thank you for utterly scaring the crap out of me.

Sorry! Didn't mean to be terrifying! As I say, I have come into contact with some lovely people I "met" on craiglist--and my mom found her lifelong friend through a newspaper "roommate wanted" ad, so I know that not everyone is a psycho killer.

II today for March 18th- feels late to the game, but I'm definitely not complaining. I had also applied to their SMP, and recently was rejected, so I hope that this means that there are better plans for me. Now to prepare for that MMI!

Honestly there is nothing to prepare for. Just be confident. All they want to know is can you form a couple of clear thoughts about a subject, can you communicate them effectively to the person in the room and can you defend your point of view. No one (At least from my experience) is going to be mean or aggressively attacking your comments. Just think about it as a really good practice (although way too early) for your clinical rotation and your CS exam. Best of luck. Also UC was amazing. I was very impressed with their school.

Actually, during my past experience there doing MMIs there have been scenarios in which the role player became aggressive/emotional and was even yelling at the interviewee. However, this is just because the role player is acting the part--it is not in any way a genuine show of hostility, but you still are judged based on how you interact and respond.

(And I would still suggest running through some MMI scenarios just to familiarize yourself with the process if you are not accustomed to this interview format.)
