2014-2015 University of Colorado Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My understanding from what Mr. Dickerson told us was that the adcom meets twice a month on Fridays and acceptance go out by phone call that afternoon. The first round of acceptances went out on a Wednesday because that's when Oct. 15th fell which is the date that all schools agree to wait til to grant their first round of acceptances.
That's what I thought anyway. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe I'm making this up..

They met on Friday 9/26 I believe, I don't know if its only Fridays. I thought he said 2x a month? Not every two weeks? But did he say they make the calls the same day? Cool!
I actually don't recall him mentioning Fridays as the meeting day (I interviewed on 10/3). I thought he said that they would meet again early the next week. I don't know... It's all a blur now. I have high hopes for the week though! Good luck everyone!
Okay so, if they met 9/26 (Friday) and then again on the week of 10/5 (lets say on Weds. the 7th), why were seemingly no/little 9/26 and 10/3 interview day applicants accepted? Interesting...

I wonder if we can find the pattern when the AdCom meets. Lol, this process is making me/us over-analyze things wayyy too much.

This week be all like:

I'll be joining you guys tomorrow. Very excited to see this school!

Interviewed here today. Some info you guys might like (at least what I remember).

Someone asked about exec committee meeting-- They are not meeting next week (there is some sort of national convention). Mr. Vickerson mentioned that our pool would be reviewed mid Nov. (Not sure if this means that is the next exec meeting or not).

He also mentioned that the waitlist may change a little bit this year. Typically they offer about 200 offers and pull about 20 from the waitlist. He said number of accepted students could go down with more coming off the waitlist (I think he said there was a different system as far as scoring for accepted students and new(?) dean.

Maybe some others that were there could fill in the gaps or correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, for those that fly out and have some time before their flight departs, you can save a bunch of money on transport to the airport by hopping on the bus in front (South side- main entrance) of Fitzsimons and getting on bus 15 then transferring to the AT line at the Colfax & Billings stop.

Did he say which interview dates were in the mid november pool?

I'll fill in a little bit. We do have a new dean of admissions this year and there are going to be a few changes to the process compared to last year. It is actually a good thing for you all. one of the cool things about the school is how receptive administration is to feedback. Probably unsurprisingly, there was plenty of feedback regarding the communication (or lack thereof) between the administration and those pre-meds eagerly waiting for the call/email/smoke signal/anything to ease their anxiety during the obnoxiously long wait period. The new dean was very receptive and did assure us that there would be improvements this year.

The class of 2018 had 184 students matriculate, and your class will probably remain somewhere around there.

Good luck!

So there was something I always wondered...

The students that host the student panel and do the campus tours always say that they don't have anything to do with the admissions committee and don't communicate with them about their interactions with the interviewees. Is this true? Is it really a "judgment-free zone" as they say? 🙂

Totally true. The admissions committee is made up of faculty, physicians affiliated with the university, or 3rd/4th year medical students. The panels are done by first and second year medical students. After interview days, we usually just go back to studying 🙂

Thanks for this info- based on what I've heard about last year, the negative feedback was well deserved and it's nice to know steps are taken at the school to integrate student feedback. That being said, on the current evidence of people on this thread desperately trying to piece together what is going on with the adcoms based on interview day hearsay, I'm not exactly holding my breath for communication and transparency a la University of Michigan.

Does anyone have the post interview acceptance rate (not matriculation rate) for IS? I only have MSAR, so please someone with US News respond. Just curious. Thanks.

Roughly 50%
Edit: Do you mean In-state or International Student?

That was my experience when I interviewed there last year. One of my interviewers challenged every answer I gave him. I was definitely in the minority as most people had very relaxed conversational interviews. This time around my interviews were very mellow.

Also, if this person is really your friend it's probably okay to ask about their gender if you're unsure.
I love the throw-away line style joke. I actually laughed.

How long did it take to hear back about interviews after submitting your secondary? (IS, if that makes a difference)

Does anyone know if there is anyway to get transcripts containing summer courses to the admissions dept. if applications are already in? I know some schools have "Update" or "Additional documents" sections on their portal. Could not find one on CU.
Thanks

CU does not take updates of any kind.

Is there a consensus on whether we actually need to scan and send in the campus preference form? Especially if we would not like to be considered for the Colorado Springs track?

Yes, definitely send it. Vidal stated that on the off chance that the CO Springs branch is not filled, they will have to select people, starting with those that did not make explicit their preference to stay in Aurora.

Does anyone know if CU accepts additional letters of recommendation?

What do you mean by "additional"? They don't accept anything outside of what you submitted with your AMCAS and secondary applications. Their website says they require 3-5 letters or a committee letter.

I submitted a committee letter and am complete, but received another letter from an MD that I was thinking of sending them to bolster my app.

Yea I would be sending it through AMCAS. I just didn't have it when I was initially submitting the primary or secondary.

I didn't even know you could do that. I'm pretty sure at interview they said that they only accept updates if they come through AMCAS. It can't hurt.

I submitted an additional letter from a physician I scribe for in september through AMCAS. So I know they at least received the letter (all my other schools did). Whether or not they actually will look at the letter, I don't know. The confusing part for me is a statement CU has on their website that says, "obtaining a letter from an employer that you are working with during the application year is very important", or something very similar. So either that statement is out of date, or they do in fact accept additional LORs through AMCAS. I really should call and confirm this but I just haven't.

So I have been doing some detective work...

As per SDN threads

In 2013: The first acceptances were given out 11/26, 12/12, 12/24, 1/5, 1/20, 1/24, 2/10 So thats around 2 weeks between each batch of acceptances
In 2012: The first acceptances were given out 10/17, 11/5, 12/12, 2/6 As you can see, a much longer interval between batches.

Im starting to wonder if they will in fact release decisions on the 15th of every month.

...Maybe it would just be easier to call and ask?

edit: I messed up one of the dates

Vidal said there's a new Dean of Admission that is changing things up just a little. I wonder if your predictions will hold. I interviewed 10/31. I'm hoping they're meeting Friday to go over the 10/31 group.

10/3 interview group checking in. Impatience is building. Had a phone call today that I though for sure was UCSOM...turned out to be a sales rep from the Colorado Rapids. The disappointment in my voice was palpable.

Interviewed 10/3 too, hoping for good news this week!!!
May the odds ever be in our favor.

Yeah all of us having been hoping they'd have met every Friday for the last month...I understand the need to have patience with this process, but does the admissions committee really not know when they're meeting? A little more transparency about all this on interview day would've been nice.

Yeah I got a 303 call today and my heart stopped. It was my mom and I was upset.

Guess I should remember that I live in Colorado...
