2014-2015 University of Colorado Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, for what its worth, my pre-med advisor who I trust very much, said Jan/Feb. I'll take heart in that. You do as well.
This makes my heart sing! I refuse to give up hope! Hang in there and thanks for your words of comfort 😀

I wish I had your optimism. Previous year's thread makes me feel like there's little to hope for . . .
Why? It seems like invites went out well into Feb. The amount of time between invitation and actual interview was shorter, but they were still invited. Plus, seeing as how there seemed to be a lot of people interviewing between this time and end of Feb last year (and SDN is a limited population pool. There's loads of people out there not posting they are interviewing) it is not so bleak.

Side note: look at it this way, one second you won't have an interview/acceptance and the next you will. There is no warning or "signs" it's coming. So even if this is not the moment you get an email or call respectively, well there's always the next. 2-3 months is a REALLY long time. Write off this next week and know we're only at half-time right now. If you've had other interviews/acceptances, at least your on the board. If you haven't well there is still plenty of time for all that to happen.

OK there is my overly optimistic, self reaffirming, rant for the day.
Also, if anyone that has gotten in or is currently in CU, I would love to PM you my stats just to get view on them to see if all this sunny Annie-like-Sun will come out tomorrow-jazz is realistic or not. 😀

I've been accepted and can talk to you if you'd like!

Is anybody following up with admissions or their interviewers regarding continued interest or intent? How are you going about this?

+2 I know for sure they stated that they would not accept updates out of fairness to all interviewees. However, I would like to know if they would invite updates once the interviews are over and the waitlist is out.

Edit: not that I want to be on the waitlist :-/

Are we thinking that everyone is (rightfully) celebrating the holidays now? Guess on more movement is first week of Jan right?

The committee was supposed to have supposedly met sometime recently (past 1-2 weeks at the latest) but I can't confirm that it actually happened. Have seen that anyone got accepted this month, so I suppose there is still a chance. However, they could have already sent out the acceptances just no one that posts to SDN or what not... Who knows. Personally, my deadline is tomorrow. If no we don't hear by the 23rd I would expect to hear in January.

It's a new process this year but if it means anything, if I remember, last years thread had some acceptances around the 23rd of i remember correctly so there is still a speck of hope I suppose. We'll see. They told us our interview group wouldn't hear until January so although I'm hoping, most likely even if acceptances come out tomorrow they would likely not be directed towards my interview group.

Happy holidays.

Edit: sorry it looks like a second grader wrote this. Long posts and iPhones don't mix. Not even going to bother editing it.

When did you interview? My hypothesis is that they meet on Fridays, and that since your group wasn't included in the batch being reviewed, they met the Friday of your interview, or before. The last released decisions were on the 2nd of Dec., I believe.

Yup that's true. They told us that there would be 1 more meeting in December which I why I said that. We'll see here soon.

II yesterday! OOS but travel to Colorado 2 times a year every year love the state and hopefully will be accepted here!

II this month for early January. OOS, CA resident. Are chances for acceptance for OOS and IS that much different? I see WACHE status of the state is relevant. Does that benefit me?

GPA is lower than average applicant, but I have a strong upward trend and this is my top choice out of all of the schools I sent secondaries to. Very excited for the interview, and prepped for the cold weather!

Also, thoughts on Colorado Springs?

Once you interview, I think state residency is irrelevant. As for Colorado Springs, heres a page about the branch (http://www.ucdenver.edu/academics/c...tion/history/Branchcampus/Pages/csbranch.aspx). You will get a nice presentation by Dr. Wallace, which I actually just found on that same page (http://www.ucdenver.edu/academics/colleges/medicalschool/administration/history/Branchcampus/Documents/CSB Interview Day Slides 2014-15.pdf). Colorado Springs is unique, and probably only a place you can actually get a feel for once you've been there. Hope this helps! Edit: grammar, lol.

Anyone know if it is possible (and probably) to switch to colorado residency after the first year here? I saw that there was a petition to change residency status, but I'm not sure whether they actually grant these pretty commonly.

I am 98% sure that you cannot, you have to pay OOS all 4 years unfortunately.

Has anyone from a November interview group heart back one way or the other yet?

They definitely do not:

The specific requirements for establishing residency for tuition classification purposes are prescribed by state law. No person may establish domicile in Colorado solely for the purpose of changing a student's classification for tuition purposes from out-of-state to in-state. An individual who seeks to establish domicile while a registered student is presumed to be seeking domicile solely for tuition purposes, which is an unlawful purpose, absent clear and convincing evidence to the contrary [Colorado Revised Statutes § 23-7-101-103(2)(e)].
Also, CUSOM receives very little support from the state of Colorado and I think in state tuition is at least partially subsidized by OOS tuition.

I was curious because a poster (last year?) said that at the end of the interview day, the presenters said something that "worried" OOS applicants. Not sure if it was just tuition or that chances for acceptance were lower. Thanks for the links. They are super helpful! I gave myself an extra day to check it out for myself.

Definitely cost. It is one of the most expensive schools to attend OOS. If you look on previous pages of this thread I have posted rough acceptance statistics for IS, OOS, and International.

Is anyone out there interviewing 2-13 or does anyone have any advice for interviewing here. I am extremely excited!

Be yourself. Talk about what makes you different from other applicants and what is important to you. This isn't GPA or MCAT, there are tons of other applicants with similar scores. What sets you apart? Why are you excited about medicine? Why CU? Have an opinion on hot button medical issues.

Most interviewers here are laid back, but there are a few who give applicants a hard time. Be ready for either, regardless of what the admissions folks tell you in the intro session.

Any way we can look at the secondaries we sent to CU? The websites says it's closed. Just wanted to be prepared!

If you have the original email they sent to you to fill out the secondary, use that website and log in information. You can then review the original material that you submitted under the application tab. At least that worked for me.

Yeah, I tried that with no luck. Thanks, though! Can anyone remember what the prompts were? Was it the same as last year's? "The way in which medicine is practiced in this country has evolved over time. Significant societal and technological changes have occurred over the past 50 years, for example. Please comment on this phenomenon, what you think the near future holds and which values (or principles) the medical profession should retain. In your discussion, you may wish to explore ethics, economics, access to healthcare or any topic you consider relevant. (2500 char)" It was a fat essay!

Here you go!

Part A. The School of Medicine regards the diversity of an entering class as an important factor in serving the educational mission of the school. Please write about things in your background that have been important to your development or that have been challenging to you on your path to a career in medicine. These could include your socioeconomic status, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, sexual identity, and work or life experiences. Explain how these have influenced your goals and preparation for a career in medicine.

Part B. Please write about the “fit” between your experiences and goals and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. If you are a reapplicant, please include information on how your application has changed.

Please answer both parts in this single essay. Limit the essay to 15000 characters, including spaces (approximately 2000 words).

Can any accepted applicants or current students comment on merit based financial aid here? Is it all through outside organizations, or does CU offer any? I really want to go next year but I have a better offer at another school.

Good luck to everyone waiting and go Broncos!

Does anyone know if the interviewer has your mcat or gpa in front of them when you are interviewing?

does anyone know if there is an accepted student fb page or anything? I would like to connect up with others. And does anyone know when the second look day is?

Second day look will be on Friday April 10. There will also be a Colorado Springs second day look on April 9.

does anyone know if there is an accepted student fb page or anything?

Net yet. Current students create the page and it's a closed group for accepted students only. Looks like last year's was created by the end of January.

Seems like another round of acceptances should be going out soon. Haven't heard of any since early December. Anyone know when the next committee meeting is?

Still waiting on an II, really want one.

(OOS)

Just had a conversation with a lot of the MS1s and I am totally impressed. It seems like every school has very interesting projects, but CU definitely shines there. I think you have a good chance. Apparently the OOS proportion of the class increases steadily each year!

Has anyone else applied for the rural track program? I just got an email saying they also interview for the track so I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this interview as well?

So my status recently updated with a "thank you some interviewing at cusom" anyone know if this means anything (besides exactly what it says). If i havent gottne a call/email with an acceptance is it indicative of an inpending waitlist/rejection?
