2014-2015 University of Colorado Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hmm interesting development (sorry to those that were waiting on February decisions, I know the feeling).. I wonder if this means they will be making calls for the last batch tomorrow?

Best of luck to everyone in limbo- I have my fingers crossed for you, CU is a great place.

Do any accepted applicants have an idea of what the schedule is like for second look?

I got an e-mail on Monday with the details for the Colorado Springs Branch's Second Look Day. I would assume something should be out shortly for the Anschutz Second Look Day.

I think I'm giving up on Colorado. I interviewed on 10/17 and am a strong in-state applicant (I managed to get into UCSF out of state). I wanted to give the CU vs. UCSF decision some strong consideration but I'm fed up with waiting. I'm disappointed with my state school. Of the 13 schools I applied to, CU has definitely been the worst communicator.

Right there with you man. Got into Michigan back in November and will be going there no matter what I hear from CU, despite being in-state and my top choice at the beginning of the cycle. Was super underwhelmed with my interview day (one of my interviewers was an MPH student, really?) and am absolutely disgusted by the lack of respect shown to applicants that just want to receive their training and devote their lives to treating patients in our great state. My parents (both CU Med alums) are absolutely FLOORED that the administration hasn't even had the decency to communicate with applicants once (unless you count a random email that was sent with an incorrect date from sometime last year...) and are actively encouraging me to go elsewhere. Real shame for the medical profession in our state- hopefully change will come swiftly.

Congrats on Michigan! You should withdraw your app now so they don't overlook the rest of us (who aren't as qualified/can't get into Mich) if you are serious about going there!

I couldn't find this info in last year's thread but when do they release decisions for the tracks? Is it before April 30th?

Also good to see CU is rising in the rankings. Up 5 spots to 35 this year!

Hey guys, med student from CU here.

Global Health Track
Regarding the Global Health Track, no one is accepted into the program until the spring semester of your first year. The way the track works is that you sign up to take the intro to global health elective in the fall of your first year (everyone can sign up for it) --> apply for the track at the end of the fall semester --> get accepted into the track and start the seminar courses in the spring. Rough numbers: 18-20 students are in the track out of the ~30 that applied.

Second Look Day
My sources tell me that the schedule is still in the works but should be out soon but I hear that there are some AWESOME activities planned for this year! So if you plan on attending definitely start making arrangements.

Let me know if you have other questions

So if I am set on attending CU, you still feel it is worth attending second look day? I mostly want to save my vacation time to spend with my wife and kids before I start school and never see them again. 🙂

If time is a constraint then I totally understand. 2LD is a great way to meet future classmates, get some more info about the school and programs offered, and to get excited for med school through hands on activities (e.g. suturing workshop, PBL workshop...). CU puts on this event to really show case some of its unique attributes. Last year I know that they also allowed guests to come but unclear exactly how this will pan out for this year. I hope this helps you make a decision. Plus feedback is always extremely positive from all students who attend.

It is scheduled for the second or first Friday in April I think. It is the previous THORsday for the Springs Branch.

II very early in cycle. Received deficiency email. No news otherwise. Multiple acceptances elsewhere but Colorado is/was my top choice.

UGH! Just checked my phone (it's been in my desk drawer) and the phone icon had a big red "2"!!!!!!!
I tapped it and immediately saw a missed call from a CO number!!! My heart jumped into my throat... and then I saw that the other "missed" item was another call, not a voicemail. Then it hit me that last time they called, the caller ID specifically said Aurora, not just CO. :smack: Bahaha

I would have had a heart attack

Wait, so was it from CUSOM or not? I'm confused...

Sorry for the confusion, it was not from CU. Old&InTheWay is correct. It would have said "Aurora" and they would have left a voicemail.
I had a little heart attack for nothing haha.

Haven't posted here in a while but have been following religiously. As a CO resident, CU has been my top choice from the beginning but the only communication I've heard since my late September interview was the deficiency email in Feb. I have an acceptance at my second choice, but man would I love to hear some positive news from this school. With the lack of post ii rejections though I've lost pretty much all hope. At the same time its been comforting to know I'm not the only one struggling, keep pushing through guys!

For the scholarship applications, are you guys repeating parts of your personal statement/secondary? I'm not sure if the committee will have access to these documents and some of the questions are very similar...

I'm struggling with the same thing. I think I'm just going to repeat parts with a small twist as my experiences haven't changed significantly in the last six months...

Any gauge on if there are still a significant number of acceptances to go out or will it mostly be waitlists and rejections for those of us still waiting to hear back (from interview days that they have alread released some acceptances for)?

I think there is still a pretty significant amount of acceptances to go out now that the interviews are done. They are probably trying to piece together the rest of a solid class, and as mentioned previously in this thread, there are likely going to be a lot of acceptances from the waitlist this year

Can you point me to the post or explain why there will probably be significant waitlist acceptances?

I think this is what FutureFACS is referring to:

Update on where admissions stands (from Vidal Dickerson today) :

They've given out just about 200 acceptances to date, expecting to give out about another 40-60 or so. He believes the new Dean is playing conservatively (in the past they've given out around 300). Due to fewer acceptances, Vidal is expecting A LOT more wait list movement this year than in the past, he is confident that they will rely on the waitlist to fill the class.

Those of you who haven't heard anything are still in the running! He emphasized that you are not rejected until you are rejected.

Finally, the committee met today, they are meeting next Friday, and the Friday after that and that's all that is planned. Therefore they are hoping to have the rest of the acceptances sent out in the next 2-3 weeks. Then they'll make sure they have their ranked waitlist set and then they'll sent the remaining waitlist notices and rejections. Overall, we should all know where we stand in 4 weeks or less.

Best of luck to you all!! 🙂

Also, the Facebook group still only has 60 incoming students. Even if you assume that an unusually high number of luddites have been accepted to the class, that still leaves many spots.

Yes, that is what I was referring too. Also just looking at the 10 or so MDapplicants profiles for those who have been accepted to CU this year, it looks like about half have acceptances to top tiers. Obviously this is not representative, but maybe its an indication that at least some of the accepted students will drop come mid-april in favor of another school. This is likely the case in previous years too...

Going back to your Feb 20th post here, if they in fact have stuck to the 2-3 week schedule for acceptance, that would mean that they have all gone out by now... But knowing Colorado, they like to take their time to select the best class possible. The 4 week mark would be this Friday.

Just some thoughts...
Match day is this Friday...could mean that there would be no calls therefore nothing to expect on Friday...
Last year at this time there was approximately 120 people already on Facebook for accepted students (which you would suspect are planning to attend)...
Last year, there were regular acceptances until the end of March, though I have the feeling that regular acceptances are over meaning we are on the waitlist. That being said, I am optimistic about being accepted off the waitlist...
The waitlist was very large last year- divided into high probability (some chance of acceptance) and low probability (practically a reject). This list was released around April 20th...
I spoke with Vidal about this during interview day and he suspects that the waitlist will arrive much sooner than last year, hopefully early April...but there is a lot of working going into it...

I can't remember who, or where the post is but I do recall someone after me posting that the horrible weather we had here for a few weeks has led to some delays. I'll try to find the post.

This is the only quote I could find. It's from March 4th, and I believe the OP is a Feb 27th interviewee.
For everyone wondering: I was told at my interview there would be a meeting this Friday, calls next week, and continual meetings thereafter until the end of March.

Vidal told my interview group that March 6th would be last committee meeting, but the poster above was told the next week that they'd be meeting every ?Friday for the rest of March.

Correction to my original post above, I must have been told by a friend (in person) that the bad weather caused delays and cancellations of committee meeting(s?) (can't remember if there were multiple cancellations).

With all of this together, I'm still hopeful that there are still acceptances to be given out. Why else would they be meeting so much?

I wonder if the last committee meeting was the 6th, and that the rest of the admissions staff meets regularly to compile the decisions.. Idk. Ugh, its practically been radio silence since 2/18, except for 1 acceptance (as per SDN at least)

Edit: I had the wrong date

It's worth noting that Vidal said on the 27th that they were only planning on one more committee meeting (the following Friday, March 6th), but if there wasn't a consensus on a given application, they would hold more as needed until they could reach a decision. Coupled with some possible cancellations due to inclement weather, I, too, am hopeful that there are still some acceptances to go out. Here's to hoping!

As someone frequently in student life due to planning events I can tell you that it has been a bit of a crazy place with match day fast approaching. I know how frustrating it is to not hear from schools you are waiting on but for now try to rest easy knowing that at this point it is out of your hands and you did everything possible. Hoping to see a bunch of you guys on second look day!

I was accepted in early January, but I haven't been allowed to join the Facebook group, does anyone know if I have to do something in particular?

I'm in the same spot. I've messaged two of the admins and I'm still waiting...

Also in the same boat. Care to name names as to who you messaged so I can see if we have an even spread of admins getting contacted? Im sure they are talking about buttz and they don't want us to participate :uhno:

I know silence isn't a rejection but it sure as hell feels like it
If the latest information about all decisions being made by end of March is correct then we only have 12 more days of waiting. As somebody pointed out, tomorrow is Match Day so highly unlikely any phone calls will go out. And if any of us do get on the wait list then people should start getting off it April 30th when people can no longer hold on to multiple acceptances. This has been a long process and the lack of any real news the past several weeks has not been easy. But hang in there. I wish all those waiting best of luck.

Agreed, but what is confusing for me is that on the website that the deadline to register for second look day is on the 23rd (Monday). So you would think they would release decisions before then, so everyone who is accepted has a chance to attend..

That reminds me of the scholarship deadline. I haven't really looked into the scholarship application because it feels premature without an acceptance or atleast being on the high waitlist. Its seems like last year they extended that deadline to beyond end of March. Have you guys filled out the scholarship application?
Again if end of March is their goal, barring any unforeseen events, I would think acceptances/waitlist etc would start filtering out next week, given it is the last full week of March. But it is all speculation at this point in time (or at any time really).
