2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you're too lazy to look through this thread then I don't think you'll do well on the essay.

If you're too big of a jacka** to answer a person's question then I don't think you'll be a good doctor.

The individual who asked that has less than 10 posts. They're likely new to SDN, so maybe he/she didn't know where to look? We're all in this stressful process together so there's no need to be catty. Meow!

Thanks! I found it. Guess I didn't look properly the first time.

hey guys! new here. quick q, generally how long does it take to receive a secondary?

says interview scheduling on my status, maybe the II are coming soon

Seems like a good sign. It would be cruel and strange if that meant anything other than an II.

In progress since 7/9, they're moving much slower than last year.

Congrats! When were you complete?

Secondary submitted on 7/5, but I wasn't marked complete until 7/28 (waiting for last LOR to come in). IS. My status before was "Applicant in Process"

+1, complete 7/7 (lucky 7's!)

Anyone know if they give aid? OOS tuition is insane

I recall reading somewhere that there is some scholarship money available, but I think only a small minority (< 10%?) receives it. My sense is that it's given (rightly, in my opinion) to URMs, particularly those who are likely to work in underserved areas. Like many states with cities and rural areas experiencing significant disparities in health along socioeconomic and racial lines, Illinois is placing a greater emphasis on producing doctors to meet the physician shortages in these areas. EDIT: check out the non-resident Dean's Scholarship http://www.medicine.uic.edu/finaid/types_of_aid/gift_aid/COM_scholarship_program/deans_scholarship/

There's next to nothing available for scholarship, Illinois is broke

Do you know what your status was before the II?
And congrats 🙂

Thanks 😀 Chicago is an amazing city and UIC is a great school!

Mine had been on "applicant in process" for a week or two, so whoever posted the detailed timeline of application, it seems to hold true.

I would probably try and get a job and apply for in-state residency if I got accepted. Illinois makes it a little difficult, but its definitely still possible.

Current interview dates are 9/15 and 9/24 in at the Chicago campus. You have 3 weeks to schedule (you have to do it by phone). I might have to wait for more dates to open up.

You guys know what it means by AM and PM? Are these half day interviews?

FYI all, right now there are 16 interview slots available each on 9/15 and 9/24 (32 total at present), for the Chicago campus only. The Chicago interview page shows that the AM group of 8 interviews in the morning, then the PM group of 8 arrives, everyone is welcomed, eats lunch and goes on a tour, then the PM group is interviewed.

II here as well (complete 7/8)! And when I called, they said that the AM time is from 9:00AM to 2:00PM and the PM time is from 11:30AM to 4:30PM

I was complete 8/11 and my status has been "Recommendation(s): received from AMCAS, awaiting admissions Officer letter review."

How long did it take for your guys status to changed from this? Just curiouss

I would recommend calling them about this. My status was the same, and I called yesterday and was moved to "Applicant in Progress." They said they get over 8,000 applications in, and they encourage you to call if your status has stayed the same for some time.

I'll def give them a call today then, thanks a lot for the info! much appreciated

+1. I had the same situation waiting for my last LOR to arrive. Once I saw it had been received by AMCAS I called and they downloaded it while I was on the phone and gave me the ok. They were friendly about it.

Thanks, what did you tell them exactly for them to download them?

I said that my last LOR had been transmitted from AMCAS a week earlier and asked if they had received it. In your case, I would tell them you submitted your secondary on 8/11 but that your status still says they are waiting for your letters and ask whether everything is ok. It's perfectly acceptable to check in and make sure they've received your letters. Most likely they'll just ask you for your AMCAS ID and look it up right there. Also, it may sound obvious, but double check first that you actually did assign them in AMCAS!

True, makes sense I just didn't want to sound annoying but its perfectly fine like you said. My status says they're expecting 3 letters from AMCAS and they got all 3 so hopefully they'll take a look at my app. Thanks a ton, the advice is much appreciated 🙂

I was concerned that I hadn't gotten a II yet since my primary got verified in June. Thought it was because I was taking the MCAT in July but now reading here I see that it may have ended up in spam and my email service clears my spam every few days so now I'm thinking I lost it. Anyone else had to deal with this/ talked to admissions about getting another sent out?

Finally changed to applicant in process after approx 6 weeks of applicant in progress..

I just called UIC. I was told they received over 8000 applications last year and they expect that number to double this year based on current volume!!!

wtf .... 16000 apps?!? That's absurd .... :ninja:

II this morning! I'm so excited! There were still spots available in October when I checked in the morning, but by the time I called (5 minutes later), I took one of the last interview slots.

For those with IIs, approximately how long were you in applicant in process stage?

II yesterday! Completed 7/9/2014 Only Peoria interview spot available on 10/17.. Live 15m away from Chicago campus.
BUT THATS OKAY! Was prepared to fly out for interviews, so 3 hr drive to Peoria for one of my TOP school is a no problemo~
