2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!!! Did anyone OOS receive the letter? And did all you guys have the additional correspondence + final decision statuses?

All of you accepted...were you Chicago interviewees or no?

Congrats to all of you!!! 😀 Im still waiting on my letter... since i live in dorms, they get the mail but dont distribute them until later today hopefully i get mine today 🙂

EDIT: just got my acceptance letter!! 😀

Congrats!!! So happy for you 🙂 hopefully mines comes soon, I'm OOS so it may take longer to arrive! Was this your temporary or permanent address on AMCAS?

Woah!!! My acceptance letter came in but for some reason it went to my permanent address instead of my mailing address???? At least my parents were excited to call me about this haha. And I interviewed 9/24 at the Chicago campus (LizzyM 73 and IS)!

Ahaha thanks! A friend of mine lives OOS too and he is waiting for his letter too.. I am sure you will get it soon! 🙂

Yes I interviewed in chicago

I have a question for those that got an acceptance letter: we're required to send in the site pref as reponse to offer by a certain deadline (in this case Nov. 12, 2014); if we REGISTER, does that mean we must attend? Obviously many of us are still waiting on many other schools, and I don't want to jeopardize anything.

Regards,

You can accept as many offers as you'd like until April 30th (correct me if I'm wrong on the date please!) for this year. By that time, you can only hold onto one acceptance and can still be on as many waitlists as you'd like. So no, this isn't necessarily binding at the moment.

I don't really remember what was said about housing during my tour. Do most M1 and M2 students take advantage of the campus housing? Or do most M1/M2 students find their own apartment that isn't linked with campus housing?

http://www.housing.uic.edu/halls/medical.php

Yes, most students look for apartments near the area. Simply because it tends to be cheaper. The M4 who gaves us a tour actually recommended this.

So if I live around 1 hour from chicago campus, is commuting possible? Like what are the pros/cons?

What about living arrangements, do most students live with roommates during M1/M2 to cut down on costs? I'm trying to cutdown on costs wherever possible, I just don't know how difficult it will be to find roommates because I know a lot of people like to live by themselves.

I asked a student this question when I was there ( I live 30 minutes away). They said it would be "possible" but extremely difficult. You live an hour away, and I can't imagine you making that commute when you have an early exam Monday morning.

I received my acceptance yesterday as well! Congratulations to everyone! 😀

When you say that you guys saw an "additional correspondences" tab, was that on your secondary application (where the tabs were at the top) or was it on your status page?/ was it a tab or just a box? If it was the box, did it have a date on it?

I interviewed in Peoria on 10/14 and haven't received anything yet :/ although my status did say that they sent out their decision on 10/23

it was on the status page at the upper righthand corner and no date was present

Accepted! Interviewed 10/8. Just got the letter in the afternoon mail. Portal said they mailed the letter 10/24 but the postmark was for 10/29 so don't worry guys about "delayed" letters being lost in the mail...they don't send them out exactly when they say...

Congrats! Are you Is or OOS? 🙂

Does anyone know if OOS scholarships exist? Don't remember them mentioning much re: financial aid at interview day...

Ugh still nothing. Anybody else with the final decision made status + additional correspondence not receive their letter yet?

Congratulations to all who have received acceptances!

However at this point, I am still listed as "Applicant in Process". At this point in the cycle, is it safe to assume that the majority of available seats have already been filled, and it would be unlikely for me to receive an II?

If you're "in process" that means that you're application is currently under review so don't give up hope just yet!! You may still hear something 🙂

How long after interviewing for those accepted did the "additional correspondence" tab come up? I interviewed 10/20, and right now have "decision pending"

Same status since August.

For me the change happened within a few days, although I believe it is based on when the committee meets (which happened to be within a few days of my interview date). I think the ADCOM regularly meets on the third Thursday of each month, so I wouldn't be surprised if it took a few weeks until your status changes to "decision made". I could be wrong!

What was the format of the Chicago interview?
There were three 30-minute one-on-one interviews: you can get any combination of med school student, admissions staff (counselor/diversity coordinator/etc.), or faculty (PhD or MD). I had one M2 student, one MD, and an admissions counselor. Some people get a PhD and 2 med students - it depends on time of day and availability I suppose.

How were they? Were they very structured or laid back?

I would say they were pretty rigorous and structured. They all had premade questions for me, and some of them were tough. But the interviewes themselves were very nice and encouraging.

I agree with DirkN - the interviewers were really agreeable (but this can always vary). The questions were structured, so while the interviewers were pleasant, you should definitely have an opinion/thoughtful response about potential ethical situations and traditional questions, i.e., Why medicine? etc.

So I received the status update "final decision made" + additional correspondence nearly 2 weeks ago, but I still have not received anything in the mail. I am OOS from Texas, but another OOS guy already posted that he received his yesterday. In your honest opinions, should I be worried?

Hi SDN people! I am getting extremely nervous. I submitted my supplemental on 8/29, and the status still says Applicant in Progress. This means they haven't even looked at my completed file yet, right? I am not a strong candidate academically, so I was hoping they would look at my application earlier rather than later... but now that they've sent out a ton of acceptance letters I'm worried that the slots left will only be for the most competitive applicants. Should I call the office to check on the status?

Don't read too far into it. They have all your info and your file is complete. I was only "in progress" for two days and have been "in process" for over a month and a half. Unless you see "final decision made" you are still a viable candidate. MSAR says they've admitted MCATs between 25-37. They obviously consider the entire student and judge "competitiveness" holistically.

Thanks for the reassurance! At least you were moved to PROCESS and not in PROGRESS. That's what worries me!

Interviewing here next week in Chicago. For those that have interviewed/ have been accepted, any words of wisdom/advice?

Can anyone comment on how the interview is at the Rockford campus? I know it is panel-style but I don't really know what to expect besides that. Thanks!

Do you guys know how they notify us what campus location we get assigned?

Dont be. your mail will arrive soon. Just be patient! 🙂

I've been complete since the end of August and I went from progress to process last Friday. Patiently waiting...

Congrats! When did you interview? I'm wondering what the turnaround time is generally.

Interviewed 9-15.. I got the status change nearly 2 weeks ago, so once they send you a letter it could take a while before it arrives

If someone, by chance, is planning on giving up a scheduled interview spot, could you please PM me? I have been trying to reschedule mine for weeks, but I am having a near-impossible time with the admissions office scheduling folks, and I'm starting to worry that I'll never be allowed to interview.

I would really appreciate it! Thank you! 😀

Edit: Got an interview spot! Thanks anyway 🙂
