2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will be in Urbana for an interview soon. Can someone PLEASE share their interview experience at Urbana? Thank you so much.
I didn't interview at Urbana but from what I have heard its a 30 minute panel interview with 3 faculty members. Hope this helps!

I've been complete since the end of August and I went from progress to process last Friday. Patiently waiting...
Did you ever call to check on the status via telephone to give a little nudge? This waiting game is terribly painful!!!

Would you mind sharing your stats? Unfortunately mine aren't too great, so I'm worried that I'm just out of luck this cycle since it's so late in the year!

That won't do anything to help. Their admin staff doesn't review candidates. I had to call them a few months back because they weren't showing receipt of my LORs. I asked the admissions lady how things work from here and she said all updates are made via their portal. The only nudge to give them is if you have a substantive update [new grades, publications, clinical experience, etc].

Wait I thought illinois didn't allow updates??

Wait I thought illinois didn't allow updates??
I got an e-mail response from the admissions office to an update a while ago, stating, "We would like to thank you for informing the Admissions Committee however, they do not accept any letters, updates etc. of any sort."

Did anybody else get their campus track assignment today? I got Chicago (my first choice).

I had to send them a course update for my final pre-req and they said it was fine, so I guess I just assumed they were open to others. Apologies for that, thank you @Pengirl007 for clarifying!!

Does anyone know when they send scholarship or financial aid info?

Good luck!! If you could share anything about the interview day at urbana once you interview I'd really appreciate it! 🙂

I also received my site placement yesterday. I also got my first choice: Chicago. There's a 99% chance I'll be attending here next year! 🙂

From what I know, UIC utilizes a High Pass, Pass, Fail system grades for M1/2. Did anyone feel like this, since it isnt a true PF, was detrimental to overall class unity? And does it negatively impact collaboration?

Congrats! That's pretty late already. Was it for Chicago? Also stats/complete?

Thanks. My application was complete (in progress) on August 14; "In process" from October 29. IS non-traditional re-applicant. Low undergrad GPA, high grad GPA, completing a PhD.

M2 here, as to the High Pass (called Outstanding - getting an "O" in a class)/Pass/Fail question, there really isn't pressure to get an O in a class = 2 standard deviations above the class mean. Residencies don't look at M1/M2 grades essentially at all, and almost everyone is aware of this. The only advantage I see to pushing yourself to get an "O" is that the top 15% of the M2 class - based on the number of "O"s from M1 year - is invited to the James Scholar Honors Program that provides research opportunities and funding for a longterm M2/3/4 research project of your own making. This program is at all of the sites not just Chicago. If you put the work in, getting an "O" is possible for any class, but certainly harder for the classes like Biochem, Micro, or Stats where you have Biochem/Micro/Math majors taking what they would consider an "easy" class, but even then it can be done.

Does anybody know where and how we send in our monetary deposit to reserve our acceptance? I already sent in my site preference, but I'm not sure what the process is for sending the deposit..

Does anyone know how much the tuition deposit actually is? I can't remember if they said 100 or 150 dollars..

I believe it's $100. I sent my deposit in with my site preference response. I'm pretty sure that's what they requested in the information they provided with the acceptance letter.

I will be interviewing at Urbana campus on Monday. Please, if anyone already interviewed there, share your experience and the overall flow of the interview day.

By the way, do you need to show up 30 minutes before the scheduled time?

I'll see you there 😛

Still in progress over here since 8/25. Would it be a good idea to call and ask what's going on? I know that there are some schools that don't like it when applicants call and ask for updates.

Does anyone who received an interview know if UIC mails out or emails interview day itineraries/schedules? I haven't received an email or mail. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat. Been in progress for nearly two months now. Not holding out much hope at this point.

So if I live around 1 hour from chicago campus, is commuting possible? Like what are the pros/cons?

Hey I don't go to UIC but I know of students who attend Rush Med (literally right next door) who commute from the 'burbs. I know one girl in particular lives about an hour away and she doesn't seem to have any issues with driving in when needed and she's a 3rd year now (apparently she even attended all her second year lectures even though they're all videotaped and most students just stay at home and watch them so obviously it wasn't too much of a hardship). She's living at home though to save money so if that's not the case for you it might be worth moving into the city. Also being so far away you may feel a bit left out socially I imagine.

I do not believe they do - I got a confirmation letter via snail mail for the date and time (AM vs. PM) but nothing else. The general itinerary is here: http://www.medicine.uic.edu/admissions/interview_day

My interview was in Chicago and I started at 11:30 A.M. They adhered to the schedule pretty well, and they always had someone take you to your interviews, so there was no confusion whatsoever.

Any Chicago interviewees care to share their experiences? Mine's still months away but it would still be nice to get an idea of the questions they asked. Thanks in advance!

I just emailed to cancel my Chicago interview for Tuesday (the 18th). Hope one of you can get bumped up!

SubwayMonster383 you should call Chicago and see if you can get the 18th! There was a guy at my interview who had done a similar thing and had his interview bumped up due to a cancellation.

I was told that once we schedule an interview we can't reschedule, of course unless there's an emergency. Has anyone been able to get bumped up after scheduling an interview?

I was told that my interview date couldn't be changed. How does one get bumped up? What do we say when we call admissions?

I would love to interview earlier. Anyone looking to cancel their chicago interview please let me know!

Just call and ask, if you really want to reschedule. I got scheduled just a few days in advance, but I was also sick for my original date.

I don't want to reschedule unless I'm getting an earlier date! Again, if anyone is looking to cancel their Chicago interview before 2/3, please PM me and I will gladly take your spot!

Hey guys, current M1 in Urbana on the Peoria track, interviewed in Chicago- let me know if you guys have any questions
Good Luck!

Interviewed on 11/14 in Peoria. How did everyone else feel about their interviews/did anyone have an unfriendly interviewer? One of mine didn't smile once and interrupted me at least four times which made me think either I was rambling or he was just like that. In any case I felt I did my best, but not like I hit it out of the park. How'd everyone else feel?

I'm interviewing in Peoria in the near future. Do you have any advice/anything you wish you had known beforehand?
