Dream, reach... Waiting to hear back from MCAT next week to see if I should even bother. URM alumni. Will submitting my secondaries as soon as I receive it give me any advantage?

In state applying as well. I was talking to a resident from the med school and he said a large percentage of interview invites are automatic after the secondary is completed. He recommended applying early and having super fast turn around with the secondary in order to have the best shot at an interview

Alright. What if your MCAT is lower than their average? Do they process the apps they get first? Or do they put better apps at the top and leave others in review for a while?
 
Went here for undergrad. Ann Arbor is a fantastic city!

From my interactions with advisors/med students/friends who applied, they interview the "best" applicants first. The ones with the top notch numbers, where if you get interviewed, you basically have a 50/50 shot of getting an acceptance or some crazy statistic like that.

Pre-health advisor told me everyone in-state that has a 3.8+/35+/decent ECs gets an automatic interview invite. He also mentioned from his experience that 95% of the people who interview here end up getting in and matriculating to SOME medical school. Needless to say, the people who interview here are top notch =)

ta8901, your stats are pretty solid. Hope you have good ECs/essays/interviewing skills to match!

Thanks Heplayer92! Definitely helps that you went to UM for undergrad. I think they will take about 60% of IS students from UMich (based on previous year trends).

Based on the 13/14 tracker, my stats are exactly on the average for accepted students. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing, though. ~100 in state acceptances, really hope i am fortunate enough to be one of them!

I am interested in continuing research and in dual degree programs. Hope Michigan gives me a shot, would honestly make my life lol!

I think they process the apps in order and then go through the rest. The resident said he applied late and the auto interviews were filled, so he called the admissions and there was a pile of apps they would then review

But in the end its umich, so its cutthroat either way haha

I ended up scoring a 24, so I doubt I'm gonna apply now.
 
I would be tempted, possibly with the exception of a very few others. Love this school. Applying OOS; good luck everyone!

Well I don't see my my stats, my state, or my undergrad so I guess I'm like Edmund Hillary, pioneering this trek alone and with a high chance of failure.
My #1 school too. I hope to be with you all at the summit.
 
Why can't all med schools be as transparent as UMich. It really eases the neurotic premed in me.

Ditto. My letter has been complete since May, but was told that "it'll be submitted when it's submitted." :grumpy:

Oh well. This gives me some time to actually write the UMich secondary. Seems like an awesome school and I adore A2.

For the question that asks, "If you worked to finance your undergraduate education, on average, how many hours per week did you work? Please average your hours, considering the academic year and summer work, over the course of your undergraduate career. " , are you supposed to put down the number of hours you worked if you didn't actually work to finance your education, but worked to make some disposable income of your own?

I worked for disposable income and left it blank.
 
To those of you who received secondaries today, have you already been verified?
 
Yup received and have been verified.

Will probably submit tomorrow. Kind of cool secondary with the interests and the fun fact, and I actually had fun writing the "passion" essay.
 
Just submitted. I really enjoyed the passion essay as well.

Mhmm...I worked as a Resident Advisor to fund my housing/food expenses. Does that count as "undergraduate education"? On AMCAS I said that I contributed about 25% of my overall undergraduate education as well. I'm leaning towards counting it, because "undergraduate education" =/= "undergraduate tuition"?

Any ideas? Thanks y'all

Also, there's a "applying as a couple" section? Wow lol. Has anyone ever used this? I'm in a serious 4 year+ relationship, and we're both applying to medical school this cycle. It would be a dream to get into the same place together, especially U of M. Unfortunately my MCAT score is a few points below their average =/ But can anyone comment on that?

currently trying to make my passionate essay less cheesy. For the "other interests" question, can I list the GHD Path of Excellence or is that not "beyond your pursuit of medical training" ?
 
Question for those who received secondaries: for the required courses, the last one says "six additional non-science courses" after requiring "two writing-intensive courses". Does that mean the two writing intensive courses are not included? Does math count as non-science? Thanks!

Personally, I interpreted non-science as humanities or social sciences. Do you mean to tell me that all the courses you took in undergrad were all science and math?

Nope, but i don't know if the two English class count if they say "in addition to two writing intensive courses". I guess I have to call the admission to figure out. Thanks!
 
back to the whole "working to finance your education" question... I worked during all of my undergrad years. Some of that money definitely went towards living expenses, but between all financial aid aspects my tuition and most of my rent was covered. Should I still just put down the average amount of hours I worked or do something else?
 
^ I don't think Michigan screens. Milkman, I would say put down average amount of hours.
 
Am I the only person having trouble coming up with the 'other interests'? The interests I have I feel silly for putting down in this context.

What do you mean? I genuinely think they just wanna know what kind of non-medical EC's you're interested in doing in Medical School. Like, I LIVE for soccer (both playing and watching), so I put it down. I love to act and do improv, so I put that down. And then I put down a specific (but not too specific) research interest. I think you could try to get quirky, but I would put down stuff that you wanna talk about/get really excited about in an interview.

Be yourself and put down what you like.

Well maybe refrain from putting down watching TV and video games.
 
For the 2nd essay, what are y'all writing about? Because I've spent a billion years doing band and music, I kind of feel like I could talk about the same kinds of stuff for both essays.

Has anyone else run into the problem where you've paid, but after 48 hours the site still says it's waiting for payment?

same. I'm guessing it might be 48 business hours, so hopefully it'll be marked by tomorrow.

Same here. But I don't think it is something to worry about because:

a) UMich said themselves it takes a few business days to post payments [it was in one of the applicant instruction details]
b) My bank hasn't officially posted the transaction - it is "pending" (requires 2-3 business days), which means that it hasn't officially been processed be either the bank or the school.
